I do like this lens, and it complements the 32-64mm f/4 and 110mm f/2 quite nicely. Build quality seems to be equivalent to the 110mm f/2, i.e., very good. Size and weight is reasonable, and I would rate overall image quality worthy of the asking price. Distortion is very well controlled, contrast and resolution are both impressive from f/4 and resolution peaks somewhere between f/8 – f/11 (although I often find myself using smaller apertures for depth of field reasons). Flare resistance is generally quite good provided you stick to reasonable apertures, although if you want extreme flare, you can have it by stopping down to f/32 and experimenting with the sun's location in the frame. On a related note, I'm not in love with the sunstars coming from the 23mm - not that they are bad, but I prefer the aesthetic of the sunstars from the 32-64mm f/4. I have attempted astrophotography with this lens, correction of comatic aberration at f/4 is good but not perfect in the extreme corners, although I'm not sure it really matters much - that f/4 maximum aperture combined with the high resolution of the GFX's sensor makes this lens/body combination less than ideal for astro. As for more traditional landscape photography, the lens does not disappoint - vignetting is minimal when stopped down, the corners are sharp, I don't see any sign of chromatic aberration.

On a GFX100, this thing sparkles and shines - it's a whole different ballgame to FF. For several reasons. It's really sharp, especially around the f:11 mark (but impressive throughout its aperture range, perhaps a little fall off at the corners wide open, and certainly bests the Zeiss 18mm Milvius or the older Distagon 21 on a Canon5d4 or 5DSR even allowing for the different sensors). The distortion profile is completely different to a full frame lens - as long as you pay some attention to your verticals and your horizontals, you're going to be surprised at how well this lens controls distortion. Color rendition is particularly realistic, unlike the aforementioned Zeiss lenses, which tend to over-saturate color. There's hardly any need for color work in post. This is one of Fuji's strong points. Zone focussing is the order of the day here; and manual with close up work, as is the case with any lens this wide. Auto seems about par for the course otherwise - not particularly fast but more than adequate for a wide. It's a lovely lens to use manually. Everything feels so solid, well built and connected - good on the bigger body. I've only really used this lens in manual/raw modes, so can't comment on Fuji's film simulations, etc. This lens rewards patience and consideration - it's as good as or better than any of the other prime GF lenses I've used and bests the zooms. Highly recommended, if this length is what you want.

This is a beautiful lens in every way. It is sharp, perfectly contrasty, appears to be flare-proof and is built with a quality that rivals the best of my old Zeiss and Sekor primes. I am impressed at how Fujifilm has vaulted itself to the top of the lens maker heap in a short period of time. The image quality is simply other-worldly with the GFX50S and this lens paired together.I frequently tell people that if they are doing video, sports or wildlife photography - then the GFX system will not make any sense to them. But if you shoot portraits, architecture, landscapes or product photography then you will not find a better system available today. If you focus on architecture or landscapes in particular then this lens belongs in your kit.

*Some background information first*I am using the GF 23 mm lens with Fujifilm GFX 50R. The combined hardware, GFX50R + GF 233mm is light and compact enough to be easy to travel with. The attached images are from a trip to Europe. I find the battery life on the GFX 50R to be quite satisfactory and typically I run out of steam before I run out battery.*My experience*The lens is beautiful and easy to use, producing incredibly sharp images, practically across the entire range of apertures. I have found no noticeable distortion. The level of detail and the range of light play captured is simply amazing. The combination is a dream come true, a piece of art, Fujifilm at its best!!!*Image processing*I shoot raw and use Capture One Pro to develop the raw files. ... More*Some background information first*I am using the GF 23 mm lens with Fujifilm GFX 50R. The combination is a dream come true, a piece of art, Fujifilm at its best!!!*Image processing*I shoot raw and use Capture One Pro to develop the raw files. Basically, I use CO to bring out some detail in the shadows and to make sure highlights are not clipped. Nothing else, I avoid using other software to enhance the images. After-all, I shoot Fujifilm for the amazing color and natural feel of the images, I do not want to interfere too much with that.I attach two images, I hope you will enjoy them. I would be happy to answer any questions.*Final words*The GFX50R + GF 233mm combination is perfect for landscape photographers. It encourages you to take a slow pace and get in tune with the nature around you. Knowing how much your lens has the capacity to capture, it makes you stop and imagine the possibilities and what will be the outcome when you finally sit down to develop the raw files. On many photography sites you read that the gear is not important and that instead it is the photographer’s eye that matters the most. This might be true, but my experience with the GFX50R + GF 233mm combo is that, in fact, amazing gear can help you discover the best in you as photographer because it frees you to imagine without limitation. It is only when the hardware gets out of the picture by not limiting you, that you as a photographer are set free to discover your own limits.
It is a great lens and very sharp even when wide open. Distortion and light fall-off are well controlled. With LM motor focusing is fast and silent. For a F4 lens it is really bulky, especially when compared with GF 20-35/4 lens. I wish it could be a GF23/3.5 or even 2.8 at the same size and price.
This lens is a ludicrously sharp lens. This lens needs 150-200mp MF sensor to get the best out of it. 50s and possibly even the 100gfx cameras are under resolving this lens resolving ability. This lens will most likely not be updated for a very VERY long time as it’s build and optical quality is one to stand the ages, very much like the zeiss otus range.I like that all fujifilm lenses are coming out WR straight out of the box. This lens is expensive, buy it!you will also feel expensive when you have and use this lens. You will feel like a millionaire on your yacht wearing an LV G-string with all your models around you smiling CHEEEEEZE!!!
Perfectly packed. Lens is every bit as nice as described. Glad I grabbed this one! It will be put to good use. Many thanks!
A quick follow up to my review from 2020. Briefly, I still love this lens after owning for 5 years. I use it on both my GFX 50s and 100s. Typically my backpack has this lens, the GF 45mm, and the GF 120mm packed and ready to go, along with one GFX body. I can’t imagine ever leaving this behind, unless I eventually give in and get the 20-35mm zoom. ;^)
When you want to apply a wide angle to landscape - which can make a very nice shot - this lens is fantastic. I took the shot of Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland planning to highlight the hexagonal rocks in the foreground. This lens allowed me to get rocks all the way to the horizon, plus some ocean blur and a good amount of sky. I have this shot in a 24x18 print and the detail and depth of field are incredible. (It was a 30-second exposure at f/29 with a polarizer.) I was able to take a number of nice shots, and the lens is easy to work with, but the quality of the shot is what matters most, and this lens was awesome.
After only a few days use on a GFX 100 body, this lens is destined to become a favorite. The minimization of distortion is particularly welcome, as is the resistance to flare, unusual in a 18mm (FF equivalent) lens. Color and contrast transmission is excellent. The auto focus is fast and unobtrusive and it's easy to use manually, too. It's as sharp as the 120mm macro lens, one of the sharpest lenses out there, and the construction is solid and confidence-inspiring. It balances very well on the bigger GFX body. I like this lens a lot more than I thought I would.
