At first, I will state I have never been a fan of zoom lenses. There are too many moving parts. With that, on to the review.I performed a series of quick tests to see how well the zoom performed and was a little concerned about the 45mm end of this copy of the lens. It opens up wide enough to use for many landscape opportunities while also zooming in tight enough for portrait photos with very smooth bokeh. Of course, it would be even nicer if it could allow one more stop of light in it but there is a limit of what is possible when using a sensor of this size.I have found no issues with this lens at all. But the images are fantastic - nearly noise-free, and the image stabilization kept them superbly sharp. This lens works wonders.In operation it is fine. It is a bit bigger and heavier than my 28-300mm Nikkor, but not so much that it becomes a problem. The larger sensor requires a larger diameter lens, namely 89mm versus the 77mm of my Nikkors, and that extra glass makes it weigh about half a pound more. But that was not enough to make it unwieldy.It isn't cheap, but it's in the same price range as eg the Nikkor 24-70mm. I may eventually buy its 32-64mm partner for wider shots. For now I'm just blown away.

The only thing that I can think of that could possibly be improved is that if one is using this lens for landscape photography, it would be nice to have it a little wider at times like open to 32mm but this is probably not even possible. It may not perform quite as well near the edges at f4 but nothing that sticks out. There is a little bit of vignette near the edge at f4 if you turn off the auto correct on the lens but nothing that it does not take care of automatically within the camera when shooting. One thing that I was really surprised with was the bokeh. Of course when not zoomed in so shooting at the 45mm end, there is not really that much separation from the background as it can only open to f/4. However, when at the zoomed in end (100mm) and shooting wide open, one can really get very nice separation of the subject from the background and the bokeh is very smooth and pleasant. I was really surprised with just how nice it is in this way.I have been using this lens even more than I expected as it can really cover a wide variety of situations. It can be a very nice landscape lens that can cover tons of scenes, especially with how much one can crop with the 100mp on the camera while also being a very respectable portrait lens at the same time. I have enjoyed this lens even more than I expected!

I found it interesting that even when I was using zooms with a wider range of focal lengths the most common were right in the range of this lens. As I reviewed shots taken with the Fujifilm GF 32-64mm zoom I found that I was predominantly shooting at close to 63mm. This led to the decision to purchase the GF 45-100mm f/4 which covers roughly the full frame equivalent 36-79mm range.As with all of the GF lenses the build quality and operation is outstanding. Metal construction with engraved markings, smooth zoom and focusing ring, although I rarely use manual focus. Focus is fast and accurate. Nearly silent too. Honestly I’ve been wanting this lens for the longest and in Christmas they had a saleGoing on for like $500 off I think. So I had to finally get it ! And let me Tell you! This lens is worth every penny! super sharp even wide open at f4! Auto focus is pretty good . Not the fastest speciallyWhen dark but with the right lighting AF is good enough! it’s pretty big , not that heavy but I don’t mind . but if you want something portable this is not it . i totally recomend this Lena if you’re looking for just 1 lens to Do it all . Note that both these options have no image stabilization. That was the make or break feature for me.
These Fuji lenses are beasts in size, but if you are working in medium format, you have already accepted that aspect of these systems. It has an 82mm filter size. Just saying. Feels solid in the hand. Very smooth zoom and focus.The OIS works a treat. I was able to handhold a 9/5 of a second exposure at f4 zoomed to 100 while sitting on the couch at night in a room lit by two table lamps, and got an acceptable image. Not a great image, but acceptable.I love this camera and the lenses. I debated whether to sell the 32-64 that I bought with the GFX 50R and buy a 30mm as a stand alone wide angle, but in the end I just kept them both, even with the big overlap. It has an 82mm filter size. Just saying. Feels solid in the hand. Very smooth zoom and focus.The OIS works a treat. I was able to handhold a 9/5 of a second exposure at f4 zoomed to 100 while sitting on the couch at night in a room lit by two table lamps, and got an acceptable image. Not a great image, but acceptable.I love this camera and the lenses. I debated whether to sell the 32-64 that I bought with the GFX 50R and buy a 30mm as a stand alone wide angle, but in the end I just kept them both, even with the big overlap. That would have been perfect, but they do not. Why not? FUJI, ARE YOU LISTENING?People have said this lens is sharper than the 32-64, but I have not had that borne out in my travels. Coming from a background as an 8x10 film shooter, I have a thing about sharpness. They are both plenty sharp. I used it with a Fuji extension tube the other day, and it was really nice. Handles screw-on filters nicely. The petal hoods on all these lenses seem comical and pointless, but they work without vignetting at the widest setting.You won't be disappointed, unless you find yourself wishing it were wider, like I found myself wishing the 32-64 were longer.
This lens is the current Pro standard zoom in the GFX line. It's flexible for many uses, with built in optical image stabilization, and a nice zoom range from wide to short telephoto. You could run a business with a GFX camera and only have this one lens. You can shoot everything from landscapes to fashion, to family portraits with this lens, and have exceptional quality results. If you shoot medium format weddings, then this is your lens. Leave it on the camera all day. That said, I recently walked a long way out to the salt hexagons in Badwater Basin in Death Valley, and this thing (With a tripod, plenty of water, and camera bag) got heavy. It's performance is above the 35-70mm as it should be for three times the cost. (Depending on rebates) It focuses quick, is sharper with less CA wide open, has less distortion, and the OIS works great. It doesn't focus close enough for tabletop still life or product photography however, (The 35-70mm focuses closer) but that's easily solved with the 18mm extension tube which works great on this lens. This is as Prime-like as a zoom gets, but if you're pixel peeping, the primes are still a bit better, as they should be. (None of your customers will notice) This lens takes 82mm filters, which isn't awesome, but if you have the GF23mm at least you can share filters. It's sharp, great color/contrast, and very flexible. You can't lose. Happy shooting!
If you find more technical tests online for this lens, you will be enamored by how perfect it is. Sharp corner to corner even wide open. Amazing bokeh, etc. All of this is true. But this is not a macro lens. If you try to use it at the minimum close distance, you will see that outside a tiny patch in the middle, it is quite soft and downright awful in the corners, at all apertures. So if you are looking to take photos of small flat objects (like digitizing film with a camera) you will be much better served by APS-C or full frame true 1:1 macro lenses. By the way, adding an extension tube does not help, it only makes it worse. This lens is not optimized for close focus, but it is marvelous for subjects from 6 feet to infinity.
