A Great First Lens for the GFX System

This lens is a stunner if you can get it at the kit or rebate price. At MSRP, I'd potentially save your money to put towards other lenses. This 35-70mm is light and compact. It's somewhat soft in the corners until you stop down a stop or two. It's actually a great landscape lens offering a 28-55mm FF equivalent focal range, and from F/8-F/11 it's a razor. 62mm filter thread diameter isn't super common like 77mm is, maybe get a stepdown ring and share your filters between lenses then. There's a tiny bit of CA on very high contrast subjects, especially at 70mm, but stop down to F/11 and it'll go away. Keep in mind, diffraction doesn't become an issue on medium format until after f/11. F/11-f/16 is perfectly usable without lots of softness like can creep in on APSC and ... MoreThis lens is a stunner if you can get it at the kit or rebate price. The lens is nice and sharp, there is a bit of distortion especially at the wide end, but the cameras firmware profiles will correct for it. I also own the 45-100mm, which is 3 times heavier, 3 times the size, and 3 1/2 times more expensive. It has less wide angle, less distortion, less CA at larger apertures, OIS stabilization, and less close focus ability. The 35-70mm can do close-up shots much better than the 45-100mm where you'll need an extension tube. For the money, you can't beat this little zoom. It's not a portrait lens though, don't expect anything in the way of bokeh and creamy backgrounds. Cheers.

Image quality is excellent. Reviewers have noted that wide open it is a bit soft in the corners. That is true, but in practice it is quite good. Stopped down one or two stops it offers excellent sharpness. I expected flare to be a problem, but so far, even when shooting into the sun, it has been fine. I'm impressed and pleased. It handles very well and is recommended.

I already have the GF 45-100 but wanted something smaller and lighter to carry for casual use. This lens is incredibly small and lightweight - it is a joy to carry around. AND the image quality is really good. It is sharp and contrasty. The variable aperture doesn't bother me at all. I just set it to 5.6 or 8.0 and never worry about it. The lack of an aperture ring isn't a big deal either. Just adjust it with the front command dial - it is super easy to do. I have used it for landscapes and studio use it was great. It was $500 when I bought it and for that price it is a good deal.

Good landscape lens
24 May 2023

I love the wide views I get with this lens and it is nice and sharp. Also not too heavy which my back appreciates when I'm hiking. My only complaint is that without any markings or stops on the focus ring I have a very hard time focusing in darkness (like for milky way shots). On the GFX 50r in near total darkness the screen and viewfinder are pretty much useless and I cannot tell the noise from the stars. Otherwise it's pretty much perfect from an optical standpoint. AF seems plenty good enough for the landscape shots I take. A good buy.

For $999 this is a hard sell, but when bought as part of a kit or when discounted to $499 this becomes a lens every GFX owner should have. The lens feels well made and is not too plasticky, although the missing aperture ring does make for an inconsistent control scheme when used in conjunction with other GF lenses. The sharpness is not as biting as Fuji's primes, but it is sufficient to take advantage of the 100MP sensors. This lens features good close focus ability, especially when compared to comparable GF lenses like the 45-100, allowing for a pleasant amount of bokeh in close subject photography, however there is a lot of spherical aberration at close focus distances, significantly reducing contrast unless stopped down. The focal length range is useful, ... MoreFor $999 this is a hard sell, but when bought as part of a kit or when discounted to $499 this becomes a lens every GFX owner should have. The focal length range is useful, although I do wish it went a little wider. It will be interesting to see if Fuji expands this variable aperture zoom range with a similarly small and affordable telephoto lens, perhaps a 70-140/4.5-6.3?

OK lens, not special
30 December 2022

The lens is surprisingly light, and size is nice for travel when collapsed. Having all other GF and X series Fuji lenses with an aperture ring I found that annoying it was missing. Also the operation of having to extend the lens to use it was strange. Either of those issues I could deal with but images generated from the lens are nothing special. I have the GF 50mm lens which is in a similar price range and everything about the 50mm lens is better. The focus on this lens is slow and difficult in low light. The sharpness wide open especially at close distances is not great. Sure at F8 as others have said it is fine, but I don't want to be limited to f8 for as wide open as I can shoot. The colors from this lens look good. The wide angle end is just not quite wide ... MoreThe lens is surprisingly light, and size is nice for travel when collapsed. The wide angle end is just not quite wide enough for what I want for a wide angle lens, and zoomed in any portraits I took with this lens seemed poor in comparison to the look of other GF or even X series lenses. Not being sure what I would ever do with this lens, I returned it. Sure the price was great but I would rather not have something just sitting in a drawer. I will keep using my 50mm GF for a light travel/walkaround lens and look for something wider than this to complement the other lenses I have.

The lens I've waited for
8 February 2022

I have been using the GFX 50R for about a year now (March 2021). My initial purchases for glass included the 63mm as a lightweight and compact travel; in addition to the 45-100mm zoom lens for more patient shots. For a while I had wished to find a compromise between the size and the range for more sporadic moments. I had almost bought the 32-64mm, but the specs listed on FujiFilm's site had it only slightly less bulky than the 45-100 (about 30mm in length and 200 grams less)! When Fuji released the information that they would be making a sub 3inch, sub 1lb zoom lens for their medium format cameras, I hopped on Adoroma and pre ordered one immediately. This range turns out to be a pretty sexy 28mm at its widest and an acceptable 55mm in full frame. It fits perfectly ... MoreI have been using the GFX 50R for about a year now (March 2021). This range turns out to be a pretty sexy 28mm at its widest and an acceptable 55mm in full frame. It fits perfectly into my smaller camera bags without the limitation of a prime lens. Now, judging by the way I am talking I am sure many of you professionals or perfectionists can tell I do no read into MTF charts much. Or rather, I do not let them affect my decision if it is a reasonable compromise. Compared to many of those Fuji primes, this doesn't get the same clarity. But it is nothing an average person wouldn't notice, or even an expert if they were not pixel peeping. This lens also requires a firmware update if you have a camera manufactured before a certain date. I cannot remember, but the instructions are in the manual. That is because this lens is the only in the GF line that does not have an aperture ring (which is probably how they got it so compact). I do not mind this, fore I come from using a Rebel T3 with a kit lens. I was already used to correcting all the settings before hand. It is actually rather nice being able to customize the GFX 50R hardware to adjust exposure now.In all, I would recommend this lens to anyone willing to listen. And DEFINITELY to a newcomer to the GFX systems if they do not have much photography experience. It is a great kit lens, and was clearly designed to be so. That happens to be just enough for me.

Time is valuable

Took forever for this item to be in stock, it's been 3 weeks and still haven't received my order. Moment keeps asking me to leave a review even though the tracking on the shipment obviously says it hasn't delivered yet. Ended up buying a Viltrox 23mm 1.4 a few days ago and already have it in my hands and have been shooting. Absolutely love that lens now. Will return this overpriced lens.

Useful as a lightweight wide angle lens
1 March 2023

At the introductory discount it was worth buying; at full price I would recommend some of the bigger lenses. Takes nice wide angle pictures if you want to lighten your gear. No aperture ring; setting needs to be programmed. Unlike any of my other lenses the lens hood fit was sloppy so I threw it away.

Value, Value, Value

This not the best GF lens and it has some weaknesses, but for your money it is a terrific value. Its size and weight make it a nice choice as a walkaround lens. The build is good, but not up to the 32-64mm or 45-100mm lenses, but these two lenses are more than twice the price. The retail price of $999 is a fair price, but the $500 kit price is a great deal.
