Fujifilm XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens
The high performance optical construction of 21 elements in 14 groups includes five ED lenses and one Super ED lens to help reduce chromatic aberration that often occurs in telephoto lenses. As a result, it delivers the highest image quality in its class. The lens has been designed for handheld shooting with a 5.0-stop* image stabilisation system and weighs less than 1.4kg. The linear motor realises fast autofocusing and makes it perfect for shooting fast-moving subjects including aircraft and motorsports. The lens is also both water and dust resistant and can operate in temperatures as low as -10°C, so it is suitable for use in a wide range of outdoor shooting conditions. A fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to repel water and dirt, further improving the toughness of the lens. This lens looks to be in near mint condition with almost no signs of use. The optics are clean, clear with no marks or scratches. The lens barrel shows almost no cosmetic marks. The focus ring is smooth and in great condition. The lens mount is in great condition showing almost no signs of use.

I bought a copy of this, waited almost 8 months for delivery, then was shocked at how big and heavy it was. Then, after extensive use for birding, shocked again at the poor image quality wide-open at 400mm - very glowy/hazy. I am a Fujifilm Professional Services member, so I sent it to them asking for a sanity check. They checked it and returned me another copy, noting that the original copy passed resolution tests but they replaced it as a courtesy (kudos; I have had great service from them). The second copy was exactly the same at 400mm, wide open, where it counts most: soft-focus halos around everything bright. I've owned and rented a LOT of other 100-400mm lenses for various formats from Micro Four Thirds to full-frame, and in my view, Fujifilm has released a ... MoreI bought a copy of this, waited almost 8 months for delivery, then was shocked at how big and heavy it was. I expected a sharp, light, compact lens; isn't that the sales pitch of APS-C? Instead it's as big and heavy as full-frame 100-400s of similar specs and price, and with worse image quality. I'm baffled. I should note that I'm a huge fan of Fujifilm's lenses in general and own tens of thousands of dollars worth. In my view, they need to redesign this lens, as quickly as possible. As in, it needs to be a really high priority, or it's going to really hurt their reputation. I sold my copy to finance upgrading some of my Micro Four Thirds lenses.

I've been using a Canon 6d and a 400mm 5.6L prime for about a year for wildlife/bird photography and just recently picked up an X-T3 and a few Fuji lenses, this being one of them, so this review is fairly specific to my own personal experience with that exact Canon setup vs. the X-T3 100-400 combo. All in all, I have very much enjoyed using this lens. It sits at the 400mm mark 99% of the time, and coming from the Canon 400 prime without image stabilization, the OIS on this lens has been a hand-held game changer for me. I have zero experience with other super-telephoto image stabilization systems, so I cannot speak to whether or not this better or worse than any other.Size: There was very little space or weight saving going on here switching from the canon 400 ... MoreI've been using a Canon 6d and a 400mm 5.6L prime for about a year for wildlife/bird photography and just recently picked up an X-T3 and a few Fuji lenses, this being one of them, so this review is fairly specific to my own personal experience with that exact Canon setup vs. the X-T3 100-400 combo. All in all, I have very much enjoyed using this lens. It’s big, and it’s heavy, but I find it quite comfortable to hold and work with.Image Quality: Fantastic - zero complaints.Weather sealing: While I haven’t put this through any extreme conditions, in the short time that I have owned it, it’s seen quite a bit of light rain and humidity with zero issues, and I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to use it in heavier rain or more extreme conditions.Build Quality: It certainly feels like a more breakable lens than the Canon 400mm 5.6L, but overall no complaints - I don’t plan on doing any drop tests any time soon.Any issues I might have with this lens as a new Fujifilm user coming from shooting on Canon gear for a decade are probably more about not being used to the Fujifilm system as a whole. Overall very pleased and would buy again, and would definitely recommend to any Fujifilm user looking to get a whole lot closer to their subjects.

After transitioning from Canon a few years ago, I never anticipated gravitating back toward such a substantial lens. My switch to the X-T5 was motivated by a desire for a lighter, more compact setup, and admittedly, this lens isn't that. Despite its size, this lens has truly exceeded my expectations. Its sharpness is exceptional, and AF is much quicker than what I initially anticipated based on other reviews I had read. Transitioning from Canon, I've noticed a small quirk: the zoom ring seems opposite to most other zooms I have used - t's a minor quirk though that I'll adjust to. Overall, I'm very impressed.

I have waited almost a year to review this lens and have now taken over 8,000 pictures through it. The simple verdict is that it is outstanding for what it is. Image quality is absolutely fantastic. The linear motor driven autofocus is fast and grabs focus accurately in all but the most difficult situations (dark background and dark, moving birds). The focus is quiet as well making it a nice lens to have when shooting from a blind. Weight is very manageable and the image quality remains quite compelling even when attaching it to the 1.4x teleconverter. Kudos for hitting the APS-C aperture sweet spot of 5.6 (ideal for wildlife) and having the images look so good when shooting wide open. Background blur is beautiful on perched bird shots and the subject/background ... MoreI have waited almost a year to review this lens and have now taken over 8,000 pictures through it. Kudos for hitting the APS-C aperture sweet spot of 5.6 (ideal for wildlife) and having the images look so good when shooting wide open. Background blur is beautiful on perched bird shots and the subject/background separation is excellent. The weather resistance has proved to be outstanding as I have had this out in rain numerous times and it is still perfect. Even dust has failed to penetrate the lens despite spending a great deal of time in dirty conditions. This lens performs well beyond expectations. My only gripe is not with this lens, but rather with Fuji. As someone that regularly photographs wildlife, I find the lack of a long telephoto prime beyond 400mm very frustrating. I have used the 200 f/2 and that lens is stunning - but it doesn't have the reach even with a tele-converter to be useful/justify the cost. Only two notes of caution to add. 1) Be extremely diligent and do not hold the body of the camera with this lens attached. Always hold the rig by the lens. While this is light for what it is, it is also much larger and heavier than the Fuji cams and that is a recipe for damage to the mount. 2) Turn off OIS if there is any movement. Night and day difference in sharpness of photos when it is off. Beyond that - buy and enjoy. Phenomenal lens.
Rented to 100-400 Fuji lens. First time using the lens. Went to Yosemite to try and capture the firefall. No firefall while we were there but I did really like this lens. Will rent next year and maybe in the future purchase the lens. For me this was a key reason I rented from lensrentals. I wanted to try the lens out before purchasing.Loved the packaging the lens came in. Delivered on time came in a pelican style box. Inside the box the lens was in a soft carry case. This was great as I could travel with the pelican style box and the. When in Yosemite I used the soft case case.I have a UPS store near my house so my return was easy and convenient.
So, this makes no sense, but. When I bought this I was "meh", it's barely adequate sharpness wise, I was disappointed, and felt it did not live up to it'sred label status. I even called Fujifilm repair and asked if it could be a bad example, and considered sending it in for evaluation. Oh, and after that I dropped it nearly 3' off the dining table, onto an oak floor, attachedto an X-T2, it landed on the lens mount. NO damage or change in function, not even a mark.So enter the pandemic, and I started using it during lockdown on my walks, usually at f7. Amazing images I must say. Not sure why now it is performing so well, almost as if it needed a break in period. Anyway I am very happy with it at all zoom ranges. Mounted to my X-T4 it balances perfectly, yes it is a it heavy, but I can shoot for a couple hours easily. No problem shooting birds in flighthand held at full zoom . Using single point autofocus it's nearly flawless at tracking. However on my older X-T2 it is a different story, so highly recommended to have a later generation camera with it. I have not done a comparison of resolution at different f-stops. But at my usual F7-10, I am amazed how far I can crop and have a great image. No, it is not up to my 90 F2 prime, but for a zoom it is very good. No regrets, and worth packing in my bag despite it's heft.
I have used this lens during the last 3 years. Decided to write a review as it is well deserved. The combo of xt4 and xf 100-400 has been my go to lens for every wildlife ocasion and even some landscapes. I do edit my photos with either LR or On1 Photo Raw. But soc is decent and noise is easily removed. I prefer this lens over the 150-600 for it's weight and versatility. Taking into account that my camera is older, both OIS work great. Most of my photos are either hand held or with a monopod. I am over 60 yrs old and I can carry this very easily with a small harness I bought from the Am company. ABSOLUTE RECOMENDATION. Camera settings are easy and I didn't change upgraded the latest firmware on purpose. Photos were taken last week!
I rented this lens for a trip to see the sandhill crane migration in Nebraska. After a day of shooting, I loaded photos to my iPad to see the results, and all pictures shot at the long range of the zoom lens were very soft, almost out of focus. I decided not to use the lens for the rest of the trip. Once home, I tested the lens and teleconverter with the camera I took on the trip, plus another Fujifilm camera. These tests confirmed what I saw on the trip: photos on the long end of the zoom were soft, with or without the teleconverter, on both cameras I own.
When it comes to long tele lenses for the X system this is your only option. Fuji did a great job with this lens as they have with all of their lenses for the X series. If you shoot birds, wildlife or any kind of action form a distance this lens is a must.Build Quality: 5/5: This is no different than any other Fuji red badge lens and is built to the highest standards as expected. There are critiques out there on the plastic barrel but that does not effect the build at all and helps to manage weight.Optics: 4.8/5: Tack sharp as expected from all higher end native Fuji lenses. The OIS is a thing of the future! Shooting a 400mm hand held before OIS was unthinkable now it's not even a question. So why the .2 downgrade? The lens could be a bit faster. I do realize the reality of the glass size required for making a fast long tele lens and I hate to knock Fuji too much for this but I would spend the money if Fuji were to build a solid f2 100-400 or even a fixed f2 400. While they do make the f2 200mm its just not quite the reach you need for wildlife.Overall: 4.99/5: What a great lens! Well made, fast auto focus, smooth operation, sharp images, just a delight to use. While I can get over the slower speed and the reality that I don't shoot birds at night it would be great to see one or two more options from Fuji in the long tele department. Their fast times are just flawless and they have solid mid range offerings but when it comes to the BIG glass they could use a bit more. Maybe they are working on it and have not yet released any info, who knows.I paired this with my XT-3 for this review.
I bought the Fujifilm XF 100-400 mm lens for use with my XT-3 camera and I've been very happy with the combination in the four outings I've had since the lens arrived. The lens feels solid and well built; there is no zoom creep at all when held vertically even when unlocked. Images have been crisp with good resolution even at 400 mm and color rendition is good. Focus speed has been very acceptable in both single and continuous fashion. Obviously, the lens is larger and heavier than average but I come from old 35 mm film photography and if you consider that the equivalent full frame zoom range is 150 - 600 mm the size and weight are not bad at all. Heavy to carry around your neck all day, yes, but not bad at all in an appropriate photo back pack. The lens stabilization has allowed me to get sharp hand held photos at speeds of 1/60th of a second pretty reliably. It's been a nice addition not only for wildlife but also for landscapes with a unique perspective.
