Awesome camera in the hands of an enthusiastic photographer

Although it's the same as found on the X-Pro1 and X-E1, results are different straight out of camera, this is partly because the X-M1 engine is not the same as Its bigger brothers. It has been configured differently too. Having said that you can get great shots out of the X-M1 if you take the time to configure and experiment with its settings. I've owned both of its bigger brothers and decided to get this X-M1 to see how far I could push it. For a new photographer who comes from a smartphone background, perhaps you should look at other offerings unless you are prepared to take the time needed to discover what this great camera can produce.

I purchased this camera expecting to be wowed, unfortunately I am not. Don't get me wrong you can take some great photos with this camera, and while some have had misgivings about its focusing speed I am not one of them - I find the focusing to be fairly snappy, the flash is also very good. I have never had another camera with wi-fi so have no real means of comparison, it's nice to have this feature but I don't think it is very well executed here. So if image quality is very good, focusing is good, what's not to like and why am I not wowed? When the Fuji X10 came out I bought one, and that camera feels more solidly constructed than the XM1, it also had better external controls. Then there are the things Fuji left out of the XM1 like panorama, the threaded shutter release, exposure compensation dial markings, and the camera begs for a touchscreen. I also think some of the fuji x-mount lens are pricey, particularly the new 27mm, and the 18mm which are two that I would like to get. So bottom-line it's a good camera, but in hindsight maybe I would have bonded more with the XE1, the price difference currently real is not that much.

Excellent image quality but lacking key features

I just purchased an XM1 and am a bit disappointed in its functionality and deletion by Fuji of key items. I'm not disappointed in the low price or it's image quality (IQ is outstanding from my first few uses). Of course this is what makes the XM1 affordable. My irks are: Lack of a/e lock button for metering, doesn't seem to have the function of immediate image display when shooting in RAW, no intelligent zoom feature, only one B/W basic filter, no EVF (but I can live without it). The on/off switch on my camera seems to be very stiff and difficult especially when turning off. Also the lcd gets completely blinded in bright sunlight. I have medium or normal size hands and find it difficult to hold on to the XM1 as it feels like a slippery bar of soap. I'm not complaining but just stating a few of my initial observations about the XM1. It is affordable, takes outstanding images, is small and light weight.

Great Little Camera for the Price
26 September 2023

I purchased this camera to replace my water damaged Fujifilm X-M1 that I had come to love for its terrific image quality and compact size. Build quality is great. This uses the first generation X Trans sensor and renders exquisitely clean images, even up to 6400 ISO. It is my go-to backpacking camera. The old one (all black) died after a fall in the water on a very wet backpacking trip this summer. By today's standards the camera is slow and video quality isn't very good. But battery performance is robust (I get about 600 shots per charge) and the price is right..

Great Mirrorless Camera
10 April 2018

I already owned a Fuji X100 when I decided to purchase a X-M1 to round out my collection and give me a wider choice of lenses (the X100 has a fixed 23mm lens). I have been very pleased with the X100's image quality, and the X-M1 meets the same expectations. The in-camera filters are nice, although I can't see myself using most of them very much. A few differences of note: Unlike the X100, the X-M1 doesn't have a viewfinder. Not a huge deal, but I like having the option of using a viewfinder in some situations. The LCD screen tilts and articulates in several ways, but not in the most important way for me: so that I can see myself when taking a selfie photo or video. My Sony A500 has this feature, and it's great. Build quality is not quite as nice as the X100 in my opinion. It's nice, but a not as solid. On the other hand, it's lighter and easier to carry. Overall, I'm very pleased. Buy this camera and you won't be disappointed. Photos were taken by me with the X-M1.

Great quality in a small package

The Fuji X-M1 absolutely fits the 2nd camera wish list. I have a Canon 5D II, a fabulous camera but it is very heavy. I have borrowed the Fuji X-M1 and I liked it a lot for its image quality and small size. I got the X-M1 for its even smaller size and weight, especially with its standard zoom. It fits in a jacket pocket when I hike or when I go to an event.Small cons:- the first time I used it I lost a few pictures because the top mode knob got accidentally turned to "Adv" which by default destroys the picture by applying the old toy camera look to them ("toy camera"... really???).- the lens cover easily falls off.Big plusses:- image quality on par with nice DSLRs. I have a few lenses for my XT2 and I didn't want to spend a lot on a compact camera. At the same time, I wanted good image quality. There is no EVF and in bright, outdoor light, very hard to see LCD, so there is that but to be expected. I just cover with my hand or hat. The image quality is really more from the glass your using but the sensor on this is very capable, even if it's kind of old. AF is good enough but I manual focus most of the time anyway. I use the 35 f1.4 or the 18-55 and call it a day. I use it for street, or family gatherings when I want to travel light. The flash is kind of a turd, I mean it works and can get the job done in a pinch but I prefer to use a smaller Nissin i40 and bounce it. ISO is acceptable up to ISO3200. I typically use auto ISO up 1600 with a minimum shutter speed of 1/60th with the 35 f1.4 and ISO 1600 with a minimum shutter speed of 1/15 for the 18-55 (OIS works well on this lens). I shoot RAW and convert the JPEGS in camera most of the time. It really does everything I need it to for street and candid family stuff. I think if AF is a primary need and really important, then the XF10 may be the better choice. However experienced photogs can get around the older AF system by way of manual focus, zone focusing, or careful AF while understandingthe depth of field of the lens. This is a gem of a camera in the right hands and it's going for cheap.

The Overlooked Fuji X-trans Camera

Every bit as good as the larger more expensive Fujis in Image Quality but much smaller and lighter. No view finder but the tilting screen works well except in the brightest of conditions. This is by far the most cost effective way to get into the Fuji eco system by allowing you to allocate a bigger part of the budget towards a quality lens first. I also own XE2S and XT1 and can safely say there is little difference if any in IQ between these cameras. The X-M1 offers an incredible value proposition and remains an enjoyable camera to shoot.

X-M1

Compact and easy to use. Other reviewers mentioned that this camera was all plastic so I was expecting something a little flimsy. This camera is lighter and a bit smaller than my X-E3 but feels and looks very high quality. The display is very clear. The grip on this camera is adequate but I bought the Fuji grip for this model and it adds extra support for larger lenses. Buying this 2013 model will provide you with tons of value.

I had a Canon 50D DSLR for years and it got to the point where I no longer took any photos because hauling a giant camera around with me became unappealing. I sold that and purchased the X-M1 for less money than I received for selling my 50D and the two lenses I owned and couldn't be happier. The image quality is simply astounding—everything is much crisper and there is significantly lower noise at high ISOs than anything I was able to get from the 50D. I regularly use it at ISO 1600 and have seen very little noise and can get shots that still look great even at ISO 6400.At first I was a bit hesitant to give up an optical viewfinder, let alone a viewfinder all together, and while it would be great to have, I have had any issues with the screen. And honestly I use manual focusing significantly more now than I ever did with my DSLR. The combination of the focus peaking, the focus check zoom and the distance scale makes it incredibly easy to get your shot focused exactly where you want it. The autofocus, especially if it's dark or the subject is close, isn't the fastest, but because the manual focus can be so accurate quickly and easily I haven't used it much. The 16-50 lens clearly has high quality glass in it, and even though the barrel and lens mount are plastic, it has a solid and well built feel. The thing I've struggled with the most (and I say 'struggled with' in very loose terms) is that the zoom direction is opposite what I was used to with Canon, but that is a very minor detail that I will get over with a little use.Overall I would say that I am very pleased with the camera and would recommend it to anyone. And if you have some extra money to spend and can't live without the viewfinder I would take a look at the XE-1, because even though I haven't used it or even seen it in person, I know it has the same sensor as this camera, and the image quality can't be rivaled by many cameras out there.
