Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II Lens
Thanks to the 16-55mm zoom range, the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II is a useful lens for traveling photographers. It fits on Fujifilm mirrorless cameras with an X mount. This lens weighs 410g, so it doesn't add a lot of weight to your camera bag. That way, you can easily take it with you. There's a rotating ring on the lens that allows you to quickly adjust the aperture. You can choose if you want to do this step by step or continuously. If you choose continuous, you create a smooth transition while you record. You can slowly sharpen the background, for example. The lens has a large f/2.8 aperture. This means you can take clear photos at dark locations.

I wanted to replace my old XF18-55 lens which wasn't giving the best results on my X-T5. The XF16-55 mk2 provides excellent results. It's sharp, the image quality is great, the colour rendition has the same magic as my XF16 f1.4. The focusing speed and accuracy is far better. And, because I got one on release day, Carmarthen Cameras is my new favourite camera shop :-D

After waiting for 2 months since the announcement of this long anticipated lens, it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. The general build quality is not up to the previous Fujifilm Red Badge lens standards and the general fit and finish as well as the operation of the lens is not that great. The "de-clicked to clicked" switch only seems to partially click the aperture ring, leaving it a little mushy with very little tactile feedback and the zoom action is halting and not smooth through the zoom range. Even with the premium price, I almost felt like I could live with these quality issues, but when I tested it against the Tamron 17-70 f2.8 lens, that I planned on replacing with this lens, the Tamron was equal and even better at some focal lengths and ... So with the bonus of the extra reach of the Tamron, and the just better physical usability, it makes no sense to replace it with this unsatisfactory lens. Yes, it is lighter and smaller than the original Fujifilm 16-55, as well as the Tamron, but especially considering the premium, Red Badge pricing of this unit, the two older lenses mentioned, deliver better quality handling and performance.

My Fuji journey started with the GFX 100. I have loved the system. I have backfilled into the X system because of its size. I have an X100VI and an X-H2S. I've been shooting wider primes on the X-H2S mostly for video, but I wanted a stellar zoom with minimal focus breathing for a reasonable price. I find myself shooting mostly stills now, and being able to take pictures with smaller file sizes that are great quality has been rewarding. This lens on the X-H2S shines. It's sharp and capable with quick autofocus. I had forgotten how flexible a zoom can be, and Fuji knows how to bring quality to a zoom lens. I occasionally shoot the 32-62mm GF zoom, which I like a lot but don't love. It's beautifully precise, but lacks inherent character. This little zoom has just ... I am a long time fan of Fuji X cameras and lenses, and have been shooting the XT series for many years. For most of that time, my favorite lens was the original 16-55 f2.8 lens. A wonderful working lens! But heavy and large. The updated version is at least as good, if not even better, optically. No question. And they managed to make it much, much lighter and smaller — and now it a perfect match for my XT5. Perfect. It’s much more convenient to carry and just feels great as a package.Highly recommend! Get this lens!
I won’t bore you with a technical review here, as many others do a far better job of that. Simply put, this lens is practical, nicely sized, and fun. When I returned to photography after 25 years and decided upon Fujifilm, I also decided to rely solely on primes. Which is all well and good, but as we all know there are times when you just really need a practical zoom lens right then and there…and this little beauty is now the one that you want.Unless I know exactly where I’m going and what I’ll be doing, this XF 16-55 Mk2 is what I now always take with me. For ordinary street/travel/bar photography, it does what I need it to—easily and sharply. It fits well in a sling with whatever couple of primes I might also take. If you’re in NYC, or SF, or Edinburgh, or Sarajevo and have the luxury of time, this lens is great for first-morningrecons, to be followed-up later with your creative primes. If you’re on a river cruise, it’s perfect for the city tours, while you save the 90mm for passing castles and scenic bends and funny people on other boats. And while it’s not exactly cheap, think of it as a 10 or 12-year investment and you see the value of it. To sum up, you will not be disappointed with this lens.
I preordered this lens immediately after the Fujifilm announcement. When I received the lens the zoom ring had noticeable play and movement. The zoom action is not smooth and will be looser or tighter across the different focal ranges, making it not ideal for video work. In comparison, this is not the case with the other Fujifilm XF lens or the original XF 16-55mm. Fujifilm X support on the phone told me that other people have called in and reported similar issues. One other minor thing to note is that the aperture ring when set to clicked is a lot looser and less clicky than the original XF 16-55, making it easier to unintentionally change aperture. The pros of this lens are that it is noticeably lighter and smaller, making it an ideal zoom lens for travel. Image quality overall is not noticeably different compared to the original XF 16-55. The largest reason to upgrade from the original would be for the compact size and reduced weight.B&H shipped me another lens as a replacement. The zoom ring play/movement on this copy is 75% better than the original, but is still present. This second lens has a visible dust particle under the front element glass. This isn't a big concern but when I put the lens on the camera body with the aperture ring at f/2.8, it shows as f/3.2. The f/3.2, instead of f/2.8, occurs when the aperture ring is clicked and declicked. If I set the aperture ring to A and change the aperture with the camera body dial, it will do f/2.8.Overall, due to the quality concerns I'm seeing, and also poor manufacturing/assembly tolerances, this is a difficult lens to recommend until Fujifilm improves the quality control.
I received this lens on December 12, 2024 in California, a day before flying back to Italy, where I live most of the year. I hadn't really tested this lens initially with getting over jet lag, Christmas, etc. Today (December 26, 2024), I saw the original version was on sale, and went to the website and was shocked to see 3 negative reviews on the new version. I thought I might have to return the new lens. I should say I have used the original version since 2016, taking over 43,000 photos. I own 10 Fuji lenses, and the original 16-55mm f2.8 was my MOST USED FUJI LENS.I ordered the new version back in October, wanting the lighter, more compact version, but also hoping for a bit faster autofocus and maybe a bit more sharpness. I own 10 Fuji lenses, and the original 16-55mm f2.8 was my MOST USED FUJI LENS.I ordered the new version back in October, wanting the lighter, more compact version, but also hoping for a bit faster autofocus and maybe a bit more sharpness. Today I went out and did the brick wall test, shooting both versions against a brick wall at f2.8, f4, and f5.6, and shooting both at 16mm and 55mm. The NEW version was noticeably SHARPER at f2.8 in both the center and the edges at both 16mm and 55mm. At f4 the differences were nearly the same, and at f5.6 they were pretty much equal. I will say that I didn't use a tripod, but shot with the 40MP XH2 with firmware 5.10, which has in body stabilization, and it was a bright sunny day.If anyone wants RAW samples, search for my name with photography and you will find my website and I can send you RAW files for your own examination.VERY HAPPY WITH THE NEW LENS! I see NO downsides, and will be seeing my original version.
Upgraded from original 16-55 2.8. The original is very sharp but also quite large for the X-T5 I mount it on. The new lens is a bit sharper with slightly better contrast from my side by test of my garage door. I wouldn’t upgrade for the improved sharpness but is a nice bonus. The big feature is the huge difference in size that makes this lens much more enjoyable to lug around for hours. I don’t do video but the clickless aperture feature works. The aperture clicks are quite a bit lighter feeling than the outgoing lens for what it’s worth. Focus seems faster but haven’t used enough to really judge it.Likely to be my new favorite lens I can use everywhere.
I had considered the Mk I version of this lens as a default midrange zoom many times over the years, but was always deterred by its size and weight. I had also seen some recent reviews showing that the Mk I did not fully exploit the potential resolution power of the X-H2’s 40mp sensor. Based on a few weeks of testing, I have mixed thoughts. It does indeed seem a little sharper than the 18-55 and 16-80, but not by as much as I’d expected, and certainly not in the same league as Fuji’s 1.4/1.2 WR primes. The AF is fine, even in low light conditions, but no real difference vis-vis the 18-55 and 16-80. The one big difference is that the zoom ring is much stiffer/less smooth than any of my other Fuji zooms; it’s yet to be seen if this will loosen up with use.
After just receiving the lens and then reading the couple of early reviews, I was concerned that there was going to be a problem with image quality at f/2.8. I'm not seeing a problem with my lens. Images seem sharp across the entire image at f/2.8 as far as I can tell with pixel peeping using a variety of images. Hopefully the problems that others experienced are anomalies. The lens is wonderfully smaller and lighter than the original model. AF seems instantaneous. So far, I'm glad I upgraded from the original model.
