This interesting lens has the familiar high quality characteristics of the more recent Fujifilm X-mount lens offerings. It seems to blend the precision feel and optics of the 18mm, 23mm and 33mm f1.4 WR lenses with the similar design of the 23mm, 35mm and 50mm f2 series while featuring macro capabilities. With it's minimum focus distance being extremely close to the front element, this lens may not be the best choice for doing 1:1 close-ups of living, active, small critters, it is excellent for more static subjects and provides slightly more DOF than typically longer macro focal lengths.Out of curiosity, I tested this optic against the quite close focusing 16mm f1.4 and the 23mm f1.4 WR lenses at their minimum focus distance, making the shot of the detailed flat ... MoreThis interesting lens has the familiar high quality characteristics of the more recent Fujifilm X-mount lens offerings. Starting at f2 with the two faster lenses, the fairly broad area of center sharpness was virtually identical with all three lenses all the way through to f8, while the 30mm f2.8 was slightly better at the corners and extreme edges, the overall performance was nearly indistinguishable. If doing macro work at this focal length is useful for you, as well as using it as a great all purpose, albeit, not terribly fast prime, then this could be an excellent choice for many.

Con: No Image Stabilization. (Not a must on small lenses, Most Camera have IBIS).Pro: Lightweight & Compact; Solid built; Fast Auto Focus; Sharp Image Quality; 1:1 Macro Lense and Weather Sealed. Fun everyday carry Lense and my New Favorite Lense.

It's light, small, and super sharp. The auto focus is pretty solid for general use, but going into 1:1 macro range like every other macro lens with auto focus it's not that helpful. So manually focusing is the better choice for getting precise focus every time.Sharpness and color rendering is fantastic, I wasn't sure what to expect at first. But after using it a while it has surpassed my expectations. My only gripe which is more of a personal want is that the lens would have had a focus limiter on the lens.

Still discovering the virtues of this little lens. It hits a sweet spot in terms of versatility between the FFEq. of 35mm and 50mm. So, as a travel lens it is ideal and the compromises are minor, in terms of only needing to carry one lens instead of two.For those who are somewhat addicted to one focal length (e.g., 35mm FFEq comes very natural for me), it might take a little adjustment but not much as I find the feel of this length a bit like a soft, made-to-measure glove. It is a lot of fun in terms of handling and ergonomics and quickly begins to feel very familiar. The ability to go to the edge of wideness and still be able to close-up for a portrait is fantastic. It is incredibly quick and sharp, and shooting macro 1x:1 is a gas: I'm loving the visual effect ... MoreStill discovering the virtues of this little lens. It is incredibly quick and sharp, and shooting macro 1x:1 is a gas: I'm loving the visual effect of its shallow DoF.As I said, this is not a technical review but to my eyes, the rendering of this lens is alluring. Its presence on the camera and functionality make this what I would call an extremely agile lens.If I found myself in a deserted island with only one lens, I should wish it was this one. It is well-built, and I appreciate the auto-aperture locking switch. I do wish Fuji had made firmer detents for the aperture ring as it is easy to shift the stop inadvertently with a slight bump. OTH the softness of its mechanism feel like driving a European sports car. The lens cap is sh . . .t but that is a minor thing, and easily replaced by one not so easily bumped off. The price-point makes this lens a top-tier value. Because of its light weight and size, it is a lens destined to be always in my bag.
My requirements for a macro lens have not changed for decades: Foremost: It MUST resolve a flat field sharply corner to corner without distortion and maximum optical quality in the 1:10 to 1:1 magnification ratio range at some aperture (eg. f5.6 to f8 for 35mm) This lens accurately resolves every nuance of detail and color to the new 40mp sensor, so is excellent for accurate copy work, and along with the pixel shift capability; is a spectacular performer for higher resolution imaging.A dedicated macro lens that can also give excellent quality at infinity focus is a real accomplishment. Thankfully this lens is up to that task for landscapes and in also for general use. Portraits at f2.8 render a classic focus/defocused area look. The bokeh is usefully accurate ... MoreMy requirements for a macro lens have not changed for decades: Foremost: It MUST resolve a flat field sharply corner to corner without distortion and maximum optical quality in the 1:10 to 1:1 magnification ratio range at some aperture (eg. f5.6 to f8 for 35mm) This lens accurately resolves every nuance of detail and color to the new 40mp sensor, so is excellent for accurate copy work, and along with the pixel shift capability; is a spectacular performer for higher resolution imaging.A dedicated macro lens that can also give excellent quality at infinity focus is a real accomplishment. I think many will find this lens ideal for many full body and small group images, in addition to it's obvious utility for product and tabletop work.Since focus breathing is low, and the angle of view renders the near/far relationship of objects in the 3 dimensional field much the same as the eye; focus stacking in macro photography is easy and accurate. The build quality and handling are very nice. Auto-focus is silent, fast and accurate. The lens hood is well designed.Absolutely worth every penny to me.
This lens being 30mm (45mm in APS-C Format) is the best lens to have near 35mm - 50mm that is close to human eye perspective. I got it for macro shooting but after testing it. It also seems to be perfect for infrared photography. I have not seen any hotspots as of yet. If you are looking for a macro-infrared lens this is it!
I purchased this lens to produce the food shots I wanted for my business. I am more than happy with the results.Out of curiosity I also tested it as an all rounder. It is my experience that my xf 35/1.4 does a better job at that. Same for my Voigtlander Nokton 23/1.4 , or even my XF 27/2.8 WR. But this should not be taken against the XF 30/2.8. Just my two cents, as it does the job I assigned it to perfectly.
For size reference this lens is about the same in both weight and dimensions as the fuji XF 50mm f/2. I have had it for about a month and so far like everything about it. It is fast to focus, renders beautifully and has a very useful field of view. Im not a pure macro photographer but wanted a lens with great close up capabilities while stull good for general photography. This one checks all the marks
Other reviews had said this lens is super sharp, and those reviews are correct. This lens is very similar in size and weight to the Fujifilm 50mm f/2 R WR lens; in other words, small and light. Plus this lens is very quiet with the new LM motors. My only wish is that Fujifilm would make a 2nd macro lens of this quality and sharpness in a 50mm to 60mm focal length; both are needed.
This new 30mm f2.8 macro lens is unbelievable. I have it on my XT camera 24/7. The focus is fast, accurate and so quiet. The focus ring is smooth as silk and the aperture ring has perfect clicks for each setting. You never have to worry that you're getting too close to your subject. I can't say enough how perfect this lens is for general and closeup photography.
