(318 reviews)

The FUJINON XF 16mm F2.8 R WR is designed to deliver exceptional resolution performance from Fujifilm's unique X-TRANS CMOS sensors through its precise optical design. Small and lightweight, the XF 16mm F2.8 R WR lens also adopts an inner focusing system driven by a stepping motor, which drives the lens' focusing elements into place through precise electrical pulses for extremely fast and auto-focusing capabilities. Metal components are used extensively on the exterior of the lens and the interior of the lens is sealed around the barrel in nine different locations to ensure its durability as well as the weather-resistance to its surrounding environments. Edge-to-edge sharpness from the center to the corners of the frame is achieved by the precise arrangement of 10 lens elements in 8 groups. This lens also includes two aspherical elements, which serve to suppress the image degrading effects of chromatic aberration and field curvature imperfection. Weighing in at 5.47oz (155g) and measuring just 1.79in (45.4mm) in length, this lens offers up the renowned image quality and refined style associated with the FUJINON XF family of lenses. With its metal exterior, precise click stops, and smooth dampening, this lens offers incredible image quality in a durable aesthetically pleasing appearance. The inner focusing AF system uses a stepping motor to move focusing elements into place through precise electrical pulses, in order to achieve fast and near-silent autofocus performance. The lens is designed to operate in temperatures as low as 14 Fahrenheit and is sealed at nine points around the barrel, making it both weather and dust resistant.

Another Fuji compact prime gem

If you're a fan of Fuji's compact prime line of lenses like I am, you'll appreciate this lens. It has the same build quality, image quality, snappy AF, and overall value that you get from the other lenses in the line with a nice wide angle of view at a very affordable price. It's small and nimble so it can literally fit in a pocket and it has weather sealing. Like most of Fuji's lenses, the optics are phenomenal. I can get pretty close to my subject with this lens and everything seems crisp and clear. Is it a super fast lens at f/2.8? No. But unless you really need to extra light or background blur that the f/1.4 offers, this lens should serve you just fine.

This lens is sharp at every aperture past 2.8. Chromatic aberration is practically non existing also past 2.8. But a quick fix in LR if you like to shoot wide open. Focus is fast (teamed up with the X-H1). This lens is manufactured in the Philippines, but don't let that fool you. This is very well build, typical of Fujifilm quality. All metal construction except hood. Aperture ring clicks well, so if you are into video you definitely want to control the aperture thru the camera. The focus ring is by wire, very smooth with slight resistance. The hood is made of plastic, fits well and is not loose. Now, i have stacked on 2 regular filters on this lens and have not gotten any vignetting (ND and polarizer). Now that is nice! So far I have not noticed any focus breathing. ... MoreThis lens is sharp at every aperture past 2.8. Chromatic aberration is practically non existing also past 2.8. I love the weather resistance feature, for even if you don't shoot in weather, it is nice to know dust won't get inside as easy.So for summary; great sharpness corner to corner past 2.8. Fast auto focus. Stackable filters without vignette, weather resistance, and small size.I know the 16mm f1.4 is amazing but this lens is just right.

Can't speak for you.

Every piece of Fujifilm hardware I own or have used has always been excellent in build quality, ergonomics and optics. This 16mm is small but well built, fast focusing and at least initially yields excellent prints for my purposes. Anytime I can buy an XF lens for less than 400 new in the box I'll probably snap it up even if I only shoot with it a few times per year. I can already tell that will not be the case with this tiny 16mm. Favorite Lens
22 November 2022

I never expected a 24mm to become my favorite lens, but here we are. I owned the f1.4 version prior to this one, and I prefer the f2.8 for portability. The only noticeable compromise is bokeh. But the image quality is stellar; the best micro contrast I've seen. This is the best Fuji lens for travel, environmental portraits, street and pets. If you're looking for a landscape or astro lens, go wider with the Samyang 12mm.

Great in sunny outdoor
21 November 2022

This lens is conveniently compact and light. When paired with the xpro3, it makes a great travel setup. Outdoor sunny conditions gave excellent results - excellent details, contrasty, free of distortions. However indoor shots are not that good. This lens is not very good at large aperture settings.

Great wide (24mm equiv) lens!
27 March 2020

I shoot with a pair of X-Pro2 cameras. Normally, its event photography. People. Lots of people. Sometimes not much room, sometimes you need to show them in their environment. Generally, I prefer a 28mm (full frame) for this, or a 24mm (full frame).I chose the 16mm/2.8 because its the widest you can put on an X-Pro2 and use the optical finder. Yes, you need to shoot with the little corners and you get very poor framing when close up (say under 5 feet or so). But at regular shooting distances its fine, and I can always flip to EVF when very close.I prefer the Leica-M way of shooting with the optical finder. You tend to shoot and frame a little wider than you would with an SLR, and you tend to crop the way you like with the rangefinder type camera, since you shot a bit wide to begin with.Good sharpness at corners wide open a f/2.8, but stellar sharpness at f/4.5 or smaller. Totally acceptable performance. My only complaint is the lens hood - its pretty, but its not really covering all that well. Cardboard wrapped 1/2 inch past the end of the plastic hood does not vignette at f/22, at infinity, or close up. Fuji wasn't really doing the best job with the hood. But... it look pretty. The native cap is easy to attach with the hood in place, or, a 58mm hoot will snap into the end of the hood (but it doesn't hold as well as I'd like). Reason I'm saying this is out in the sun, walkabout, you want a cap in place to protect the sensor. My particular lens had an issue when shot wide open, auto shutter speed. The images were 1/3 stop over exposed. Strangeness. Testing concluded when stopping down from smaller stops, the lens would indicate f/2.8, set for f/2.8, but the meter would still think f/3.2 That was repeatable time and again. A few dozen brisk rotations of the aperture ring fixed the issue. Chalk it up to some lube being where it wasn't supposed to be on an electrical contact? At any rate, the lens still gets a 5STAR for being great optically, small, light and not in your face to the people I shoot.

I was expecting more
9 June 2020

Summary: F/2.8 is slightly softer than the other apertures but it's still pretty sharp. The center and midframe are always sharp and contrasty, but corners and edges are noticeably worse at all apertures. This is probably due to the distortion that's being corrected in camera. The small size is nice, probably the nicest thing about this lens, but I feel Fuji made a lot of optical sacrifices to make it this small. The lens handles aberrations quite well.Impressions: I got this lens to potentially replace my 10-24 zoom as I don't use it as much as I expected, but after trying it out I'm thinking I might keep the zoom. I was honestly expecting more from this lens considering it's price and aperture. I've compared it to some Fuji lenses that I have or had over the years, here's what I see. Vs the 10-24 at 16mm, the zoom dominates at all apertures (except 2.8, which the zoom can't do). Better contract and sharpness overall, honestly the 10-24 is an excellent lens but I would expect a prime to at least match it. With that said they're similar in the center. Vs the 14mm 2.8, once again the 14mm is much better overall but has slightly more coma at f/2.8. This matchup almost isn't fair as the 14mm 2.8 is ridiculously sharp corner with a slight stopping down of the aperture. Vs the 15-45mm at 15mm the two are very similar when matching apertures. The 16mm seems to have a slight contrast advantage in the midframe and a slight sharpness advantage in the center. The 15-45 is a (pretty good!) cheap plastic consumer lens and really shouldn't be in the league of the 16mm 2.8 XF but here we are. Overall this 16mm 2.8 isn't a bad lens, in fact I don't think Fuji is capable of making a bad lens, but I was definitely expecting more given it's parameters.

Nice and Versatile Wide Angle for X-E4
15 April 2022

This lens both looks and feels great on my X-E4 body. Autofocus is very silent and fast, making it perfect for taking quick snapshots during travel. The short focal length together with the minimum aperture at 1/22 makes handheld slow-shutter photography possible even without any stabilization or ND filter. When I bring it as the only lens during trips it has proven versatile enough for landscape, food, interior, and environmental portraits. I highly recommend this lens for users who prefer portability.

This is another fine offering from Fujifilm with the 24mm equivalent angle of view being a favorite for many applications. The build and features as well as the image quality "follows suit" with the fujifilm series of small f2 lenses. For the size and feature set there is nothing to complain about, especially if you don't need it to be tack sharp wide open. I did some comparisons with other Fujifilm lenses and for I.Q. comparisons, the 14mm f2.8 being the best most direct equivalent as far as size, weight, AOV and aperture. At 2.8 my 14mm is noticeably sharper. At f4 the 14 has a very slight edge and by f5.6 they seem virtually identical in sharpness and rendering. The bottom line with both zooms is that they show equivalent sharpness to the 16mm and both show slightly more contrast and color pop .

This lens is soft! Wide open, even the center is soft and fuzzy. Stopped down to f8, it becomes acceptable. Away from the center, it is always soft - texture is fuzzy. I put this on a brand new xpro3 so, it is not the camera (I hope). Images are just awful. I took a few shots also with a nikon z20mm/f2.8; day and night difference. I probably will try the 50mm/f1 or the 16mm/f1.4 and hope for the best. This is only good as a beater lens.
