Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R APD Lens

$761.63

(603 reviews)

Designed for the bokeh enthusiast, Fuji's XF 56mm f/1.2 R APD Lens features a unique optical design, prime portrait-length perspective, and fast f/1.2 maximum aperture to benefit creating shallow depth of field imagery. Differentiating itself from Fuji's other X-series 56mm f/1.2 lens, this 85mm-equivalent lens incorporates a controllable apodising filter into its design to produce an aesthetically-pleasing out-of-focus quality to suit selective focus applications. This lens is in excellent condition with only the lightest signs of use. The optics are clean and clear with no marks or scratches. There is an extremely minor amount of dust within the lens. The lens barrel shows only the lightest cosmetic marks. The focus ring is smooth and in great condition. The lens mount is in good condition.

A legendary lens, but not for me

I wanted so badly to love this lens like other people do. It was very sharp and the bokeh was pleasant. However, the squishy aperture ring and the inconsistent autofocus were disappointing. If you are taking pictures of still subjects, the autofocus is fine, but it struggles for anything even moving a bit. Finally, I wouldn’t recommend this for the smaller Fuji bodies. It’s a big lens and quickly throws things off balance.

Pros: I have several Fuji lenses, but did not buy this one as it had a poor review. That was only one, so after two years I risked it, though I was worried - was I wasting my money? The lens is fantastic. It IS sharp, a great carry-around, and I just wish this had been my first lens! My favourite of all is the 50-140, but it is not possible to tell which of those lenses took a particular photo. It may not be as sharp in the corners wide open to a pixel-peeper with a loupe as the 50-140, but I'm not bothered. It takes sharp, contrasty photos.Cons: The ONLY thing I don't like is that at the long end it extends too much. That's the design, though, and I will happily live with it.

The 56mm f/ 1.2 R lens I purchased claimed it was in "great condition". Obviously, "great condition" is objective. The lens sounds like a maraca when changing the f-stop, and has a hard time focusing. If I had known of the real condition of this lens, I wouldn't have bought it. I don't mind the "cosmetic" wear out, as long as it works properly, but this lens is frustrating to work with. I tried it a couple of times, and went back to my 18-55 lens, which is a pleasure to work with. After I open the box when the 5.6mm f/1.2 R lens arrived, I was dismayed to the sound of the f-stop ring. I read some reviews that mentioned the noise. Still, I could not believe Fuji would produce such a noisy lens. So, this week, I went to B&H and tested a new lens. Hence, the price I payed for the one purchased for this lens in eBay, isn't worth it.

Essential for Fujifilm (low light) Portraiture
12 February 2019

I have spent months researching Fujifilm and their appropriate lenses. This lens is by far an amazing edition to my set-up. I am currently operating with an XT-1, 10-24mm f4, 18-55 f2.8-4 and now this beauty. With an exotic f stop of 1.2 you really can go deep into the realms of portraiture. I have hand held this lens for portraits in the middle of the night (that would be impossible for my other lenses as I would need to increase the shutter length to compensate for their “lower” f stops.) This lens is crystal clear and provides absolutely gorgeous out of focus bokeh. The construction and qualities of this lens are gorgeous. I also updated my camera body software to the latest version which has improved the autofocus time. I cannot recommend this lens enough. Fuji XF56mm f1.2 Rental: Wow and WOW!

This was my first lens rental experience and it was a pleasant surprise. All of the steps were clearly defined and explained. When I spoke with a representative I received clear information. In addition, the representative suggested that I speak with one of the technical advisors who was very helpful regarding specific tips for the lens I rented. As for the lens.....OMG...WOW! I had heard that it was fantastic from many photographers on YouTube. But, seeing the results was just another level. I rented the lens because after shooting my daughter's HS grad photos last year, her friend asked me to do hers. I was really nervous because I didn't really have a fast lens. Great Portrait Lens
9 January 2023

This is an excellent lens for portrait photography. It performs well in all the lighting situations Ive tried it in so far. It seems to be well built. The one thingthat I would necessarily consider a downside, but should be mentioned is that this is a fixed lens. Anyone used to a zoom lens will have a bit of trouble at first, and will need to back up frequently to find the right shot. The glass in this thing makes up for the bit of extra work by producing beautifully crisp images.

Highly recommend! Did not disappoint during engagement shoot!
29 October 2021

Photography is a hobby for me so I'm no professional. My cousin's fiance asked me to capture the moment he proposed so I knew I had to use top notch glass for such a special moment. I'm glad I did because the images were amazing! I shot raw and jpeg and the jpeg images were amazing. I didn't even bother touching up the raw files. My cousin and her fiance received plenty of comments of how amazing and professional the photos looked. I'm very happy with the rental and would recommend this glass to anyone looking for great photos.

Much wow! Amazing lens!
5 January 2023

I was a little hesitant about purchasing this lens for my wife, as she has plenty and really wanted a lens specific to her FujiFilm XPro3, but man, she was SPEECHLESS. She’s always wanted a f1.2 and this baby takes gorgeous video and photos! Best purchase and once again, the associate at the Arlington location recommended this one over the 50mm. No regrets here!

My Fuji Headshot and Portrait Lens
3 October 2022

I use this lens almost exclusively for portraits and headshots. Incredibly sharp and fast. It's also much smaller than the 85mm full frame equivalents I had with Canon without sacrificing quality. If I didn't shoot portraits and headshots, I don't think I would use it much, but if you do, get one.

Sharp at 1.2
22 June 2016

This lens was optimized for center sharpness wide open and it is important to note that this is what it was primariy designed for.It is rather successful because at F1.2, you get a pleasant bokeh and decent background / foreground blur, while not having to manage the thinest depth of field like you would get if you were shooting the Canon 85mm F1.2 or the Canon 50 F1.4 on a full frame (I used to own the latter). This means that if the same lens was used on a full frame, almost nothing would be in focus and shooting hand held would be much more difficult. This is a lens for shooting details, people's face, landscape details, it can be used both inside or outside. It is not good for close work, this is not a macro lens at all.It is not small, but not big either. ... MoreThis lens was optimized for center sharpness wide open and it is important to note that this is what it was primariy designed for.It is rather successful because at F1.2, you get a pleasant bokeh and decent background / foreground blur, while not having to manage the thinest depth of field like you would get if you were shooting the Canon 85mm F1.2 or the Canon 50 F1.4 on a full frame (I used to own the latter). The build quality is all right, some versions sold on other sites were returned lenses from an older batch that had issues both with the aperture ring (too loose) and the focus ring (irregular friction).I am reasonably happy with the copy I bought from Wex, note that the focus ring appears to be very firm (resistant) in what I guess are the latest batches. Some reviewers pointed out that the Fuji 90mm F2.0 has better bokeh and it is true, but then this is a different tool, the Fuji 90mm has too much reach to be used indoor, it does not have the same speed and it is much heavier and longer. Conclusion (and summary):----------------------------------As always, nothing is perfect but this lens will satisfy those individuals who want all of the following properties in one lens:- fast aperture,- good bokeh,- optical performance,- compact lens (versus huge telephoto)Nothing gets nearer is you need all of those properties in one lens and you buy it for shooting at F1.2.I hope that this helps.
