I've had this watch for a month now and used it primarily for hiking and running. Expensive? Yep. Worth the price? I say yes. Why? There's a first-thing-in-the-morning summary of sleep, recovery, preparation for exercise, calendar events and weather, complete with a little life-affirming quote (maybe sappy, but I like it) - like everything else with this watch, you can turn this on or off. The logarithms (no different for this watch than any other Garmin model), aren't the most accurate - Recovery Time in particular is vastly overstated; others have written articles about this, but that's not a dig on this watch (and frankly, I'm amazed that they're brave enough to try and estimate that at all and come as close as they do). If the watch got lost or broken would I buy it again? Yes, and quickly. Would I recommend it to a friend? Assuming they could afford it, yes, without reservation. I have tried pretty much every brand of performance watch at one time or another. This is my favorite, by far. Christmas is coming - tell Santa.

Wear and Tear led me to upgrading my watch, and I couldn't be happier. The user interface does leave a bit to be desired in terms of navigation, but once you've acclimated, the features, functionality and usage make the watch an independent fitness tracker and coach, without the need to rely on on a distracting phone. The solar functionality is great, and the software has been significantly improved. By far the most pleasant introductions are the morning summaries and body battery - quick, actionable glances to prep me for my day or close down the old day. This was a gift from my wife a few weeks ago and I love it! I was lukewarm towards smart watches as I'm a long time Rolex fan and battery life on most watches seems to be kind-of short. However, this Fenix 7x Solar provides more tech than I've been able to figure out in 3 weeks, easy to use, all the Garmin map/GPS/Altitude stuff that makes Garmin great; all the health monitoring and a fantastically good battery life, I'm getting somewhere around 25 days of battery charge, at least as best I can tell with it being this new. I like the touch screen functionality, it works but if you accidentally brush up against something the screen isn't activating, it knows when you want to interact with it and otherwise stays on the main screen. And, as a nice looking high-quality time piece for my everyday wear - it looks great! I'm not sure if I'll ever use all of the functionality the Fenix has to offer - but that's okay. I'm sure I don't use all of my iPhone, either. As for size and weight, it is slightly larger and heavier than my FR 935 (and the new FR 955), but within a day or two of wearing it and getting used to it - it's not an issue. I wear it all time, including when sleeping. We already know Garmin battery life is amazing so I take it off occasionally to charge it. I'm 6'0'' / 190 lbs. So far, I'm loving my new Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar and would absolutely recommend it. PS. I use the flashlight all the time! Who knew that would be a thing? Given all of the resources Garmin has at their disposal being a market leader in the fitness and navigation devices, I expected better.I'm back in Suunto-land once again without mapping on my wrist, but the 9 Peak Pro otherwise does everything I need it to do, at a lower price and with higher build quality, lighter weight, and slimmer on the wrist, to boot. The Suunto App is more than adequate for tracking long-term training trends, and I like iPad version of their app, which Garmin lacks. The battery life on the 9 Peak Pro seems about on par with the Fenix, even without solar. Maybe under sunny conditions in warm (non-jacket) weather the solar would offer a slight longevity advantage.I briefly considered switching to the Garmin Epix and would expect the mapping experience to be better on its Amoled display than on the Fenix series. But the Epix is quite a spendy piece of kit, with inferior battery life compared to practically all other sports watches except for the Apple Watch, which blows it away for smartwatch features. And with the Epix you are still hampered by the unsatisfying Garmin Connect app and desktop software. So...pass.

Part of the problem with all new electronics is it has more features that you can use, or realize. So here is a brief overview: Using it for mountaineering, super fast and accurate GPS. Nice to have the maps preloaded. Since the screen is still a watch, you have to learn how to zoom in and out while the screen is locked. The specific screens are totally customizable and thus very helpful but takes a bit of time to set it all up. The heart rate monitor is OK, not always correct. At the beginning of a climb I will be working really hard at altitude and it shows a walking heart rate. Over time, and in certain positions, seems to "catch up". I really like the feature of automatically using the map elevation to set the altimeter when starting a climb. Seems like the elevation gain and loss is still dependent on how windy it is, which changes the pressure and thus adds elevation gain.So at present seems to be working well, I am able to use it and customize it, but it does take work to learn and set it up for your liking. My biggest negative is the watch face should be more easy to read, without using the back light. I think this will improve but at present kind of hard if not in bright light. Won't give it 5 stars until I use it for much longer and see if it continues to hold up.
I upgraded from a Fenix 3 HR, so my impressions are based on much older technology. I was anxiously awaiting a fenix upgrade that hit all the marks for me. First off, the weight and wearability is exponentially better. My old fenix was heavy and large, and wouldn't dream of sleeping with it on. This new model I forget is even on my wrist but yet maintains that military grade look I love. Build quality is top notch, status quo for Garmin products. Data Lover watch face is still my favorite, and this new model has so many more data points to display. Glances, controls and hot keys are so useful. Morning reports are very informative. The heart rate sensor is so much better than prior watches I have tried. GPS connectivity is almost instant. Created a multisport custom activity for an off road marathon that worked flawlessly, same goes for the pre planned route I created.I can't say I have seen any benefit of the solar feature yet, even when in full sun exposure for hours. I have been getting approximately 1 week of battery life, using it for 1-2 hours of gps activities per day, normal notifications turned on, and minimal backlight usage. Was hoping for a little longer.
I found the spo2 to be very inaccurate most times it would say im in the low 90s and im really at 98 or 99 garmin needs to really improve the accuracy i know its not a medical device but clsiming a 1-2% accuracy and being off over 5% is ridiculous i bought this watch to replace my fenix 5x plus sapphire which was more accurate than this watch. The solar charging is about as useless as it is on the edge 1040 solar battery had to be charged weekly with only sleep spo2 active and maybe 3 1hr long activities using best accuracy gps settings. At the end of the day i had to return it because the spo2 was too inaccurate and thats kind of a major reason why anybody woukd spend that much money on a good watch. I do love the sapphire watch faces they are basically scratch proof i had my fenix 5x plus sapphire and have slammed it into many sorts of metals and concretes including crashing my bicycle and the watch face remained unscratched over the years that ive had it i wore out a watch band even thats how much i used it. The 7x was just not up to par with the 5x. The toych screen made it a lot easier to use than the 5x however on the 7x you couldnt search for things on the map by typing in a store name or wven filter anything the onky option was show everything nearby then scroll on the map and tap on it which is frustrating cuz it does not load fast at all garmin should enabke you to send locations to the smart watch for navigation same way they do for the car gps units using garmin smartphone link or include a way to search in the connect app as they now allow you to use ur phone keyboard to type in what you want on the watch or enable a search field. I may buy it again.
