Had one of the original toaster-sized Garmin Forerunner back in 2003, then the smaller ones up until I got my first Apple Watch about three years ago. I track everything (running, cycling, hiking, sleeping, etc.) and the battery life of the Apple Watch is just too terrible. I have like a watch charger every place that I sit for any period of time. That was always the case, but then it started not recording my runs well (about daily runner) on Strava so I switched to the native Apple tracker app, then THAT started glitching with GPS not recording right and too many bogus segments. The whole touch-screen thing just doesn't work for a serious tool imo, like you know I wear layers over the watch when I'm running in the cold you know, and moving the jacket back to hit ... MoreHad one of the original toaster-sized Garmin Forerunner back in 2003, then the smaller ones up until I got my first Apple Watch about three years ago. On to the 265 review... yeah you don't get all the app integration you get with the Apple Watch but I figured out that is NOT why I have a "smart" watch. My doctor suggested that I use a blood oxygen meter to check it during my sleep, this watch has it and Apple can't as they violated someone's patents (https://www.macrumors.com/2023/10/27/us-trade-tribunal-apple-watch-ban-masimo/)... I have used the watch now for sleep, health (so many metrics you'll spend a day figuring it all out), running, elliptical, tread running, open ocean swimming, hiking, biking, alpine skiing, blah blah. It's such a well-engineered TOOL, you can just tell the quality. Here is the kicker... So I go to Hawaii, LOSE the charging wire (3 days ago) when the watch was at 15% charge, and has now been on low power mode for sipping battery at like 3% or something for a day now. It seems to have some kind of ultra low power mode... The charging wire(s) should come today....

The battery life is great for me, From 100% on Sunday midday to around 40-45% on Friday midday. Does use a bit more battery when doing the 5k parkruns on Saturdays but no real complaints. The battery was one of the reasons I chose this watch and I have not been disappointed with that. The screen very clear and I love the AMOELD screen, very vibrant and with the customisations of the watch face you can make it look as you prefer.Sleep tracking isn't great so I don't put too much emphasis on that as you set a sleep schedule and for the most part, the watch assumes you go to sleep at those times. It can't differentiate between lying in bed watching a movie (which I would expect no watches can so it's not that big a deal).Has a handy feature that shows estimated recovery times after workouts/activities so you don't push yourself too hard and give yourself enough time to recover.Heart rate tracking I've found to be quite accurate and helps build a picture. The app is quite good and you can also see your stats on a Garmin website which I prefer. If you're a stats freak like me, the website is great.Would definitely recommend this watch to anyone that's trying to improve their fitness, perhaps not for ultra runners as I've heard the battery life isn't great for those runs but for a more casual runner it's great.

Compromised Battery Life

I opted to move from my Garmin Forerunner 255 to the newer 265 based on the promise of a better screen and comparable battery life ("Up to 13 days" for the 265 vs "Up to 14 days" for the older 255).Unfortunately this claim is no where near achievable if you actually want anything near the functionality that existed in the previous model 255.The screen of the old 255 is always on. Anywhere, any time, you can glance at the watch without wrist gestures, and the screen with all data would be clearly visible. The newer 265, however, displays nothing on the screen at all until you perform wrist gestures. A downside of the OLED technology. The clincher is that enabling this mode drops your battery life to around 4 days. The 265 is a decent watch with a nice screen (especially indoors) but leaves you with the choice of severely compromising on battery life if you actually want comparable screen function to the older 255.The advertised battery life is severely misleading in this regard, leading me to explore my options under Australian Consumer Law so I can 'downgrade' to the previous series in order to regain a product that I don't have to charge every few days.

Everything I Could Want in a Running Watch

I have been using this watch for about a month after trading up from a FR 245 Music. I love the screen. I love the customizability. I love the data. The buttons are very easy to access during runs. The battery life is solid and I am just in the habit of plugging it in for 15 minutes each day while I sit at my desk (which is overkill). Back to the screen - it is super bright and easy to see. It's nice being able to use the touch screen features when I am not working out - something I am not used to being able to do. There are a million different ways to get it to show your data, I highly recommend going through the manual page by page to get the most out of it. It uses Training Readiness to tell me if I should take on that hard workout I have scheduled or put it off another day. It also suggests workouts for me based on the races I have put on my Garmin Connect calendar. While it's a great running watch, it is truly multi-functional enough that I can use it on bike rides, swims, hikes, and a host of other sports including Triathlon (one day...). There might be better, more expensive running watches out there, but I feel like this one does 99% of what 99% of runners would ever need.

The software seems to 'think' that a period of inactivity when sitting reading or other passive activity is a nap, however the nap period can be deleted via the Garmin Connect web page, but when it's nearly every day it becomes and irritation. Hopefully, Garmin will provide an update to be able to switch off this auto function.I can recommend this watch for anyone who is a keen sportsperson and is interested in the data produced. It's also easy to upload the data to 3rd party apps for recording your activities. if you are interested in extensive stats and want to monitor detailed information in your progress or decline in activity it a an excellent watch. If you just want to record basic stats from an activity, then for the price and functions it probably has more facility than one would required.

I did a lot of research and had a hard time choosing between the Forerunner 255, with its MIP display, and this Forerunner 265, with its AMOLED display. I mostly work out in the daylight, so I'm sure the 255 would have been fine and it is considerably cheaper. However, the 265 looks a bit better IMO, with its graphite colour buttons and slightly bevelled screen face. A minor thing, but it is going to be on my wrist practically all of the time! There was also a good sale on when I purchased.Glad I didn't go for the small version of the watch, as it would have looked too small on my wrist (~18cm). The full size version fits just right and could even be a bit bigger without causing a problem. As it is, it's very comfortable to wear, even at night. In terms of features, it does absolutely everything I need as a moderately enthusiastic runner. I've particularly enjoyed using the Garmin running coach to better my times, which is something I didn't think would be so important to me, prior to using it.Charge seemingly lasts forever (12 days or so). Plenty of possibilities to customise all of the screens. If you don't need maps, I think this is the sweet spot in the Garmin range. Would buy again.

Great data, poor usability
17 April 2024

I have been using this product now for 3 months. I bought it to help me prepare for a half marathon. The data that the watch provides is impressive, and definitely useful. The battery life is fantastic. However, a key reason I bought the watch - the running coaches and their adaptive running programs - are not good. I am 15 weeks into a 17 week half marathon program and I have run no further than 14km, and that was at an easy pace. Having set a pace goal I have not run that pace for longer than 30 minutes. Having trusted in the program - this is Garmin - I now realise I won't be ready. My next long run is only 45 minute long. Querying Garmin on this and they tried to tell me if the app said I was ready I was ready. Went I made it clear I wasn't ready, they told me I ... MoreI have been using this product now for 3 months. I bought it to help me prepare for a half marathon. The data that the watch provides is impressive, and definitely useful. The battery life is fantastic. However, a key reason I bought the watch - the running coaches and their adaptive running programs - are not good. Went I made it clear I wasn't ready, they told me I shouldn't trust an automated program! The there's the watch itself - as I said, the exercise data it provides is great. But the watch and how you use it is clunky and glitchy. For example, the button to lap a run, is the same button you use to 'go back' if you're using another function on the watch. It's not intuitive, nor is it user friendly.

Really nice running watch, easy to use

I previously had a Garmin Forerunner 235 that lasted a very long time and had a lot of helpful features. This one has some additional functions that I’m really appreciating so far. I love the extra detail around heart rate monitoring and sleep tracking, and I’ve been having fun following the recommended workouts. I sync with the app maybe a couple times a day and I’d say the GPS picks up pretty quickly when it’s time to start a run. The body battery recovery tracking feature is a new favorite too, giving you an idea of how your effort and your rest offset or complement each other over days and weeks. All of the data is displayed clearly and accessibly on the watch face. I also appreciate this being a bit smaller than my previous watch, where I was frequently ... MoreI previously had a Garmin Forerunner 235 that lasted a very long time and had a lot of helpful features. If the extras sound appealing to you, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this watch. It performs all of its functions really nicely. Oh and the battery life is great, lasting days or even a week at a time, and charging back up quickly. If it sounds like too many features, the more pared down Garmin models are really nice too in my experience.

Upgrade

Bought 265 after years with forerunner 630. Nice to have the heart rate monitor. I like the elevation data screen for courses especially. The hot keys make access to such things as the stop watch and countdown timer easy - nice to have these features compared to the 630. Looking forward to the pace pro feature but haven’t used it. Seems like the training readiness feature will be nice after I have used it for 4 weeks. I’m still being told that I’m training to hard since it doesn’t have data on me from before. There was a review about the screen being too bright at night during sleep mode. I have my watch turn to the red light feature and I have had no issues with the watch waking me up. I like the glances that are available and how I can drill down to get more info. ... MoreBought 265 after years with forerunner 630. Nice to have the heart rate monitor. I have my watch turn to the red light feature and I have had no issues with the watch waking me up. I like the glances that are available and how I can drill down to get more info. I also like the fact that when the phone is connected to the watch, I can program the watch activities and other settings from the phones garmin connect. With my Garmin 630 - it was a pretty basic watch and so the battery seemed to last longer than the 265 which makes sense. I made some choices to help conserve battery life. I’ve decided to modify things like using ultra trac gps mode for my run commute since it is on streets and not way important to have exact distances for the easy slow miles. I’ve also opted to turn off blue tooth- I only turn it on when I want to modify the watch settings on the phone (can do this on my watch but enjoy using the phone for this). I am also not using the music feature, but I was not interested in this feature since I have an Apple Music subscription. It would have been nice if Apple Music could be used on the watch. I’m looking forward to trying out pacepro feature. I was able to use the up ahead feature on a course today. I will be using this feature on races to help know distances from such things as aid stations. I like how I can see an outline of the route I will be running. I also like how on a course, I can see what elevation I will be going over. I would say that I am fairly tech savvy. It did take me some time and effort to learn about the features - but I also like to know how everything works and had fun geeking out with learning about all the features. I’m happy with the purchase and look forward to the many years of use.

Useful features for many health tracking activitie
14 November 2023

I bought the watch to monitor my health statistics for my preferred fitness activities (Cardio, Mountain Biking and Indoor Cycling). I prefer a smaller watch, so I went with the 265S and I am pleased with the fit. I did have to purchase a larger band, but the included band worked fine until I found a replacement. The metrics captured for each workout are what I want to see for the most part. However, for some reason, your Pulse Ox is only recorded during your sleep. I have not found a way to record this valuable metric on any of the Apps used during my exercises. Hopefully this significant deficiency will be corrected in future updates. Also, there needs to be integration with Garmin’s health tracking smartwatches with Garmin’s backcountry route tracking devices. Also, there needs to be integration with Garmin’s health tracking smartwatches with Garmin’s backcountry route tracking devices. I would like the health statistics captured during my adventures to be overlayed onto the GPS/Topo routes collected by the Inreach. The statistics would be used for later analysis and displayed on both the Earthmate and Garmin Connect apps. But with the exception of the significant deficiency and lack of integration, the watch is a useful tool.
