I received this beautiful watch as a birthday present from my wife. I had a Fitbit sense that suffered catastrophic death due to water getting behind the screen. I started looking at different watches to deal with the work I do, and the abuse that puts on my wearables. This lede to garmin, and why I chose this model for my wife to give me for my birthday. There are a lot of features that Fitbit are not interested in providing, and it is definitely more durable to deal with the abuse of my job. I live in Colorado, where the sun shines for over 300 days a year, so solar was a no brainer. So far battery life has been very good, like average of 26-27 days between charging. When I can get some sun on that, I imagine that number goes up to over 50 days between charging. ... MoreI received this beautiful watch as a birthday present from my wife. 6 months ago I started losing weight and getting back into shape due to some minor health issues and was using my Android Wear OS smart watch to track workouts. It was okay, but the smart watch lacked some features I was looking for, the touch screen was difficult to use with sweaty fingers, the battery life was poor and the screen was hard to read outside. The Instinct Solar Tactical Edition was just what I was looking for. Being able to control the functions with real buttons eliminated the touchscreen issues I was having, the battery life is amazing. Even tracking several workouts a week and hikes with the GPS on, I usually only have to charge once a week. If tracking indoor workouts without the GPS, the battery last much longer than a week. There are not enough good things I can say about this watch and the associated Garmin Connect app. My wife wishes there was a slightly smaller version that would not look so big on her wrist because she would replace her smart watch.I would definitely recommend this over a touchscreen smart watch for workouts, hiking and everyday use.

I have a bit of a love hate relationship with this watch. I have had this watch for a few months and here are my thoughts.Pros: The GPS function seems to be very accurateHR monitor at rest is spot onoverall functionality is pretty intuitivethe solar charging really does work, after a day in the sun you will pick up a few days of chargeCons: the HR monitor during a run is wildly inaccurate. mine usually picks up on my cadence and will show my hr in the 170-180 for 30-40 minutes at a timefor such a rugged watch, the watchband is already breaking a few months in. I reached out to Garmins support team and they said it isn't covered under warranty,The deal breaker on this watch is that the surf app is ATROCIOUS! DO NOT BUY THIS if you plan on on using this ... I move up from a Forerunner to the instinct solar. Solar feature is more than a gimmick, but doesn't really impact my charging schedule as I use it for running and biking several times a week. Everyone talks about the battery life which is true but biggest upgrade is the number of different activity types compared to the forerunner. You can really customize this thing. Fit and finish are also great and the monochromatic screen is always easy to read. For some reason this watch doesn't report V02 max estimate which the forerunner would. All the hardware is there to do it so I don't understand why that feature isn't included. Otherwise completely satisfied.
I’ve purchased this watch about a month ago. A bunch of the guys in my squad have been using this watch for sometime now and they always talk great things about it. I got this watch mainly because I am tired of charging my Apple Watch every day. The solar feature is the best, while it might not charge the watch as fast as the electrical, it prevents the watch from running out of battery quickly. You do need to be exposed to the sunlight in order for the watch to charge. One thing that I would add to this watch is the capability to answer the phone through the watch. Not that a person will be talking through a watch as opposed to a phone, but this helps when you don’t have the phone next to you. Like I said I have not had the chance to use this watch long enough, but ... MoreI’ve purchased this watch about a month ago. Great watch with many features. I don't particularly like the wrist band which has a soft rubbery feel like you find in cheap watches. Another con is the small size of the display screen. I though it would be bigger but a good 1/4" of the displayed is with fixed labels for the buttons. This should have been done on the outside of bezel instead of using valuable display space. Hence the smaller fonts. Otherwise, no complaints. I purchased this on sale for under $250 so I am happy, but not worth much above that.
Purchased the Garmin because I want a change from an Apple watch. It definitely has some advantages like battery life you can stretch it to 3-4 weeks with all the functions on.even longer on power saver mode. Solar capability does not really add to battery life after charging in full sun for a few days I contacted Garmin support how it was explained to me it just maintains the battery energy. I like how I can see how many steps/day. The main reason I like it is how the watch looks, its rugged and light. Have not really use most of the functions like stealth feature GPS, some of the activity widgets etc. Heart and pulse ox was accurate. Overall Apple Watch is much more better but is a good alternative if you want to change your look from time to time.
One of the best watch of its class on the market! Like it very much so far.Minimalistic, rugged, durable, low power consuming, tough, solar.Much better than its competitors (G-Shock GBD-1000, for instance) cause Garmin has huge experience in sport watch industry. What I like the most: size and shape - look cool and arent oversized, very comfortable, screen and information is very cotrast and easy to read in any condition, waterproof, dustproof, anti scratch screen, impact-friendly bezel, fucnctions, sport modes, stealth mode option to cut off all connections, solar charging, possibility to adjust all screen information. What I dont like: after Instinct 2 has appeared no discounts for instinct the first version (should be, I suppose:) ), if stopwatch activated ... Great respect! Will use Garmin products in the future and will recommend.
If you need a no frills or flashy watch and care most (or entirely) about function this is a great watch. Plenty of customization, widgets, activity tracking and tools. With a bit of time watching tutorials and learning how to customize it to your preferences it can be made very personalized with the things you want and use and streamlined to not show the things you dont. While its not a substitute for a good compass, dedicated altimeter/barometer, chest rig pulse monitor or thermometer it does do all of that fairly accurately providing you do your part in set up. Its also got some very useful hot key options like Man Over Board to quickly mark your gps location, various gps coordinate formats, sunrise/sunset, moon phases, gps track back for if you need to get back ... Its also got some very useful hot key options like Man Over Board to quickly mark your gps location, various gps coordinate formats, sunrise/sunset, moon phases, gps track back for if you need to get back to where you came from, gps course plotting and numerous other handy options. The app for tracking activity is also handy if youre tracking things for health (again not as good as a dedicated system) although the step counter is definitely not as accurate as something like a Fitbit and the staircase counter really doesnt work well at all. One downside (for me) is that it only comes in black or moss green. The moss green is a nice subtle shade though so it works fine. So if you need a watch that goes well with a more formal look than this is not the one for you as even in the black it looks like a stereotypical sport/fitness watch. Another is that some people have had issues with the altimeter/barometer readings due to where the input detector is located on the bottom of the watch allowing it to get blocked by sweat and debris, I have not had that problem yet myself however. I havent really worn a watch for almost 20 years because I hate the feeling they had restricting my wrist movement. This is light and comfortable enough that I dont really notice it except when Im washing my hands. Ive worn it everyday since I got it and actually dislike the times I need to take it off. Its also tough enough Im not worried about it if it gets banged around while playing with the kids or doing activities that are rough on gear. If you want/need a watch with the options this thing comes with its well worth the price and Id argue a far better value than some others that are twice the price with similar features.
This would be a great watch however like everything Garmin the software is terrible. I had to turn off all access to my phone and use the watch as a stand alone because the watch chooses when to notify me and ingnores my phone settings especially "do not disurb". It will start vibrating at 4am in the morning if I receive messages from my family members around the world. There is a reason why I have do not disturb. Furthermore it disables my phone from giving me the correct notifications, sounds and ringing. I was able to trouble shoot a similar problem with Garmin Tech support and within a month it went back to doing other similar things and I don't want to spend another hour with tech support. I unfortunately have 3 Garmin products and they all have software ... MoreThis would be a great watch however like everything Garmin the software is terrible.
