Couple notes, i'm using the large (1 7/8) adaptor), has a set screw. I don't find the ratchet fliping switch bothersome. I'm putting a thread on a lot of 5x8 carbon steel rods in the ground so i can add a coupler, this is weighty, starts the thread easily (bevel the rod), and in a tight space once it gets going it's easy to one hand it. and flip switch to reverse and clear the threads, that does add a bit of fidding time but not that bad. So far i'm on about the 10th rod and no issues. I can see how the mechanism could break if you're forcing things but go easy, reverse and clear the thread it's not under much stress in my case.

I'm giving it 5 stars because the ratchet is a great idea for a tap and die holder. But, and there seems to always be a "but" doesn't there. The design for this tool was not well thought out if the guide to align the die was intended to precede the die. When cutting threads on new stock, you need to put quite a bit of pressure to get the die to start cutting. If you use the tool with the die in front, the die holder works fine, but if you use the guide option to align the die with the stock that you are cutting, the die holder pops out of the handle when pressure is applied. Well, the die holder needs some sort of locking mechanism on the holder if you are going to use the guide. The ratchet action, tool fit and finish are great. The bad; 1). Taps have a divot in the top. Drill a hole with drill press, remove bit and chuck a tap spring pin. This engaged with tap to start the straight with the hole. This tool blocks that divot. Could drill one. Should be made into tool. Minus one star. 2). Die holder description says takes round and hex dies. Round dies dont fit but there needs three pointed set screws and the die holder only has one cup point. Not good for round dies. Minus one star. Couple of serious design flaws. Manufacturer can correct and needs to do better.

I work as an industrial mechanic, and often our equipment is neglected or abused. I often find my self having to repair, or create new threads. This kit really does speed up the process. The tools them selves are quite well made, all the machining and finish work is good. The ratcheting mechanisms feel good, and everything locks together nicely. The one down side to these tools is that they are on the large side, which is of course bad for tight areas. On the other hand, you have great leverage against the tap or die, so it takes less work to operate. Being a DIY motorcycle and automobile mechanic this set does more than the average person realizes. The adapters enable you to use sockets, extensions, and sockets with bits in them.The double handle gives you more control of the tool but also more torque when its needed. I used the tap feature to retap a valve cover stud hole on my car and by adding an extension it clears the valve cover. with an ordinary tap wrench it hits the cover. I also used it on my motorcycle to work on the primary. Putting an Allen bit socket on an extension and it worked like a charm. Using the adapters in the kit makes its uses endless ! The name should be more than tap and die set.
Where has this been all my life? It seems like I am always trying to tap a hole (or clean threads) in some hard to reach location. Turn the tap wrench... then unscrew the handle... take the tap wrench off... turn it 1/4 turn and place back on tap... repeat slowly until you get through the hole. Not with these. Now it is just turn... ratchet back... and turn. The only downside for me is it takes a bit more to back the tap or die to clear chips.There are accessories to be able to use a tap at the end of an extension. I was able to clear some header threads this way and boy did it make it fast. I would highly recommend this.

The T-handle design is genius to allow you to keep driving tap without moving your hands. It would be nice to have a third option on the ratchet mechanism to fully lock the handle. It does include a T-handle bar for the smaller adapters to do this so not a huge deal. This kit makes it nice so you don't have to buy the full tap and die kit if you have years of old taps and dies you already own or you just want to buy a few taps and dies you always use.
This is the Gearwrench master tap and die set, comes with 11 pcs but does not include taps to thread with or the actual long extension pictured for example, warning! you must have taps to use this tool! you can purchase them separately directly from Gearwrench (recommended) or off brand ones at any hardware store, Besides that downside the ratcheting handles are heavy duty, comes with one medium sized and one big “t” wrench, everything works in conjunction smoothly. The fittings and adapters snap/lock in nicely. Only issues i had where a tad bit of wobble in handles when when extensions and adapters where added, not much but enough to notice And the fact no taps came with the set. Over all its a decent set and i Give it a 4 out of 5.
very good product. used it to retap and clean out treads on a truck motor. i used the ratcheting t-handles and also used the set-up for a ratchet. was very impressed with how easy the t handle worked, made it alot easier. also loved that i could use a ratchet with a extsion on to tap holes. very well made set of tools. also like that the die holders worked with round and non round dies. i would highly recommend this tool set up
