A REPAIR NIGHTMARE

While the 3A is a solid functioning phone, it can be virtually impossible to service. The problem revolves around the poor design and cost of the OLED screen used on the phone. To service the phone, you must remove the display which is primarily three components, glass/digitizer/OLED, and is held into the frame with a fair amount of adhesive. Even using proper heating equipment, it's extremely easy to damage the OLED during the removal process. The largest problem here being the replacement display price. They're often $70-$110, and you can easily purchase a fully functional used 3A (at the time of writing) for the same price! If you must service a 3A, use the following suggestion. Before you start, apply 3 glass screen protectors, one on top of the other, to the current display. Especially if the screen is cracked but still functions. It doesn't even have to be for a 3a, just as long as it fully fits. Doing so reduces the amount of "flex" experienced with the poor factory design. It also reduces additional fragmentation if you're attempting to only replace the outer glass. This also helps with heat longevity, whether you're using a hot tray, heat pad, or hot air pen. Regardless, Google could easily followed Apple with this design and used lighter adhesive, hinged upper andtwo screws on the lower.

A lemon of epic proportion!

Have had my Pixel 3A for less than 1-1/2 years--had problems by 5 months. Biggest problems are (1) constant dropped audio (can't hear other person after 5-10 minutes or less) and (2) call dropping altogether and inability to then call out. Also have some freezing and loss of connection to Wifi. Reported issues to Google 6 months in, but Google simply provided the resetting Network troubleshooting suggestion that didn’t work. It was hard to follow up during the pandemic because customer service was maxed out, and it was impossible to get through. After much time and effort on my part documenting how I had contacted them without results during the warranty period, Google told me to send in my phone to be replaced by a refurbished model. (Note: Google wouldn't send the refurb before receiving my defective phone. They simply expect customers to have a backup phone to use or be without a phone--despite the fact that the problem is with their product.) The refurbished phone had the exact same issues from Day 1. The Pixel 3a is so unreliable and so stressful that I have now ordered an iPhone to replace this horrendous phone. Such a waste of money and a complete disappointment!

Good phone but texting issues with Ubuntu Touch
14 December 2022

Nice phone. Got it with Ubuntu Touch as UBPorts devices page shows everything working. Unfortunately, incoming texts arrive only some of the time (O2 monthly contract) and searching the web finds others with the same issue. Suggestions such as locking to 3G weren't permanent solutions for me so I wouldn't recommend this device for Ubuntu Touch despite what devices page says. I'm back on my old Nexus 5 ( which has video playback issues but at least works as a phone and is free of texting issues under Ubuntu Touch.

Good, inexpensive phone, but screen-burn
26 October 2021

Happy with the refurbished Google Pixel 3a mostly. It works well, came clean, with charger, delivered early and it is in good shape. The only thing I was disappointed with was some screen-burn/ghosting on the OLED display that will always be there. Apparently the previous owner used TikTok and Snapchat A LOT or left the phone on highest brightness to cause me to see their notifications and the TikTok buttons down the right side, top and bottom in the background of my screen, mostly visible when I am displaying a light-colored app or the home screen. I have decided that it doesn't bother me enough to return the phone, but I think it would be nice if the seller gave a clearer description of any defects in the product information for potential buyers.I love the camera ... MoreHappy with the refurbished Google Pixel 3a mostly. I went from an old flip phone! I knew all of that flip phones features, but it was 3g and I needed a new phone. I first purchased an Iphone8 but it broke down in 36 hours. So I had a day with that phone and I did not like the sound of the voice of callers, they sounded different than they do in person, just a bit. I would have lived with it. Then, I got this Pixel 3. It also has a great camera! I can really hear more clearly than the Iphone, Maybe it was in the settings, but I had not found a good setting on the Iphone, and I haven't messed with any of the Pixel 3a settings yet, having to do with the phone. And right out of the box, the Pixel3a was easy to use and sounded better. I have used it only for a week, but it is fine, the battery lasts a long time and it does charge fast. It is just the right size to fit in my front pocket, I loved my flip phone for the fact that it would fit in my front pocket, the 3a does too. The IPhone8+ was a bit too large, too heavy for my front pocket. It has a lot of features, and will play Youtube videos easily and clearly. Music is also clear, just with the internal speakers. I am pleased and would buy this phone again.

Low cost. Highest Value. Nuff said
29 January 2020

For those of you that are Value Investors: At the time of this review, this phone represents high value at a reasonably low cost. I came from the Apple ecosystem where I spent 20 years there. After spending 2-3 days learning this phone I realized this phone does a hell of a lot! It's not as simplified as Apple meaning you have a much wider range of control. That wide range made me realize how dumbed down I was being with Apple although in hindsight I admit I didn't mind paying more for a easy to use smartphone and I appreciated it during my time with them. However, I am of the opinion that Apple while being a tremendously strong brand, produces good products but definitely not at strataspheric levels. The cost versus value was out of balance. So to me, I went with good ole fashion logic, considering my fiscally conservative values and chose another path which was easy since I was already familiar with Google services, this just made sense. Haven't regretted it so far. This "refurbished" phone is of the highest quality and it's impossible to tell that it was refurbished. It looks, acts, and performs as new!

Not Really As Described

The shade on the display is a distortion that looks like color bars: as if there were black and white bars that are shining through the display. Im sure someone with more knowledge about the tech could describe better. When I read shade I thought the display would be a little dim. The dust and fingerprints look like it was taken out of someones pocket before being put into the ziplock bag for shipment. Its basically functional: Ive been trying to do a security update all day and it never sticks. In an update loop. Im continually prompted to uninstall and reinstall my work profile. Never had this issue with a Motorola, Im surprised this happens with a stock Android phone. If this was $50 I would keep it. Small, but a powerful device
7 July 2022

It's exactly what I expected, a great 2018 Google flagship smartphone. It is quite small, but it is great for gaming. It has a 2.80GHz CPU, 3.48 GB of usable RAM. If you plan on buying this phone and are wanting some sort of case with a built in kickstand, there aren't many options, most of those are for the 3a model, which are slightly bigger and do not have the speakers in the right place. The battery life is exceptional. This phone lasts for about 14 hours on a full charge. The reason why this product is cheap as it is, is because Google no longer provides OS & security updates to this phone.

worst ever
20 June 2022

Today was the last straw. My wife has a Samsung Galaxy S10. We were both sent group texts from my son announcing his newborn baby's name with a photo. She received her text. I did not receive mine. This has happened before, too. On our 2020 Forester, the phone's navigation app occasionally stops working. Imagine on a busy freeway the difficulty this creates. Luckily if my wife is in the car, she then navigates on her Galaxy S10 always without problems. I frequently find that its sound for receiving texts fails even after repeatedly checking notification settings.
