Like everything from Go Pro it's sturdy and well made. The microphone is a step up, and the cold shoes mean I can use my wireless mics with it.But wait. I need a cold shoe riser, as the microphone consumes the side, and I need to press the shutter button on top...There are several real frustrations though. The USB-C port on the mod can't be used for charging, nor can you download content to the app or FCP with it. This is just silly, charging is what, 2 wires? Why did they even bother with an HDMI out port? Should have spent that money on letting me charge it inside the media mod.

I occasionally video long speaking events and love the GoPro because of its continuous recording! But my old GoPro didn’t have a mic input so I had to record the audio separately and stitch it together afterwards which was a pain. The media mod works great with the 3.5mm input jack for my microphone AND it has two shoe mounts which work perfectly with my Rode Wireless Go microphone so it all stays attached.I had to watch a YouTube video to learn how to remove the camera’s battery cover so this would fit (just pull hard), but it slides in well and has a tight, sturdy fit.It also had a USB port in the media mod for connecting to your computer for charging or transferring files.I could not connect it to my iPhone or iPad to transfer over USB-C, but that may ... I think you need a special “camera adapter” for the devices to recognize it. The iPad did charge it when connected though which was nice.It also has an HDMI out port, but it’s a much smaller connection so you’ll need a Micro HDMI to regular HDMI cable if you want to use it.Overall it does exactly what I need and seems sturdy for long use.

BIG MISTAKE OF A PURCHASE. I’m very well versed and tech savvy with audio and video production. I’ve been considering adding a GoPro to my line-up for quite some time to augment videoing live music performances, primarily of my son. I purchased a GoPro HERO11 Creator Edition at Best Buy on Friday September 16, 2022 after weighing the options for live music performances. I own and use a wide range of great gear from a Sony A7 to my iPhone and a host of other video and audio production gear. The portability, stability and video quality of the GoPro seemed to make sense to capture more of the action shots I was wanting from the music performances. And, the “Creator Edition” seemed like a great out-of-the-box option. Ironically, one of the lead sales persons at Best Buy ... MoreBIG MISTAKE OF A PURCHASE. And, the “Creator Edition” seemed like a great out-of-the-box option. Ironically, one of the lead sales persons at Best Buy was walking me through the pros and cons of my decision just prior to purchasing. He noted there’s been a lot of complaints about the GoPro 9 and 10 overheating. This was of great concern, but the write-ups on the 11 mentioned the “Software Update” provided solutions for the overheating issue. I didn’t quite grasp how a software update could correct a hardware problem, but I trusted this to be the case. WRONG DECISION. I purchased the GoPro HERO11 Creator Edition with the intention of using it with the included Charging Grip. GoPro offered assurances the overheating issues were the result of a software issue and could be remedied with an update, plus not using the camera in a stationary position. I followed along with the most recent software and kept the GoPro moving while shooting my first concert with the camera in the shade. I was so angry that the camera overheated and shut down about 30 minutes into the performance. I literally missed recording half of my son’s first performance with his new band at a major festival because the GoPro HERO11 overheated 30 minutes into the performance. UNREAL!!! This is completely unsatisfactory and total bust of a product. Especially when a modern “action cam” can’t handle 30 minutes of shooting live music in the shade. What a piece of useless overhyped junk!!!! Thanks for the total let-down and waste of money. Worst of all thanks for making miss half of my son’s performance.Regards,E. Stephens

So, I was really excited to get the Media Mod for the Hero9, and it was something I kept off from buying until I had a chance to actually visit the Photography Holy Place in NYC (The B&H Flagship Store). The microphone is good. Having the USB-C port is great on the outside because it makes it much easier to power your GoPro on external power. But the implementation to attach the MediaMod to your GP is... well... impractical.First, the Media Mod doesn't have it's own securement point to your accessories; you need to use the ones on your GoPro. But the problem is, if you need to change the battery and/or SD card, you have to un-mount the camera inside the media mod into even access that. But the problem is, if you need to change the battery and/or SD card, you have to un-mount the camera inside the media mod into even access that. Very time consuming, and adds more complexity to the use of the camera. And that's another problem- the access to the SD card requires you to take out the GP from the Media Mod to access it. And with that requirement, you need to take that screw out of the mount to access the SD card. WAY more work than I feel it should be for a mod at this price range. If GoPro is listening, which I doubt they are, I would recommend that a new version of the MediaMod needs to have a SD card slot on the outside OR a better way to access the internal SD card. And the mounting point needs to be integrated into the actual Media Mod, and not require the use of the camera's MediaMod. I'm gonna keep using it, because for me it works okay, but I'm definitely not satisfied with this.
There is in my opinion a design issue. If you need to change the battery, you have to remove the entire frame or attach a charger to this. Other than buying a Volta, you will need to attach an external charger.Second issue is the battery life on the display is very in accurate. The GoPro stops recording at 30% of battery life, but when removed, the GoPro reports the correct percentage. Other than that, the sound is clear and works well. I’ll still use it, but will warn users who need this to be plug and play.
The GoPro is a great action camera. To fully utilize its capabilities you'll need to purchase some accessories. The accessories are not terribly expensive so I think it's worth it. Small size. Lot's of exposure options. I have yet to edit any of my footage yet, but I don't have reason to believe the footage would be anything less than satisfactory.
I am happy with the unit so far it served my purpose. One critique that I can mention on the unit is that neither the forward facing microphone or the reverse facing microphone are much better than the original go pro microphone at most a 10% improvement over the GoPro original Mic. I would not have mind paying $20-$30 more for a better set of mics. The main reason for the purchase was to be able to connect an external microphone. Other than that the unit is sturdy enough the mounting ears are also sturdy enough and I like that I can record while powering the unit and it does not interfere with the microphone connection. The GoPro fits perfectly inside of it and the latch is well built to keep it inside. I have read other people criticize you need to remove it in ... I have read other people criticize you need to remove it in order to remove the Sim card I find the process very easy and it does not bother me. I could’ve gone with three stars to be honest but I went into it knowing that the mics for this unit were not that great so for that reason four-star.
First, very difficult to work with. Takes time to take off and change the battery. You do have options to charge the battery without taking the case off but that not possible when you traveling. It very hard to get off. Also, you have to kept changing the mic back and fourth. The quality is okay is like not worth the money to me. It is much better then go pro audio but don’t expect too much. It also makes your go pro feels so big.
I love this Media Mod. I have a lot of camera gear that I lug around everywhere for documenting and vlogging my trips, and it gets very heavy, cumbersome, and my gf can't stand it haha. Putting the media mod on my gopro made for a perfectly discreet, go-anywhere little vlogging set up. The sound quality was much better than I expected! We now have so much more footage of our trips because we were able to keep this small portable set up on us at all times. I highly recommend this product if you're looking to capture more than just action shots with your gopro.
THis is a solid product with room for improvement. First, this gives your Hero9 or 10 an external microphone-- but the audio on the 9/10 is pretty good, so this doesn't really improve the quality that much. But the windscreen helps. WHat really helps this is the shoe mounts and the audio in plug. This enabled me to use my professional wireless microphone, mount the wireless receiver on the shoe mount and have some wireless freedom while getting superb audio. THe case is solid enough. Probably what stops me from giving this a five star instead of the four, is the accessibility design: You have to unscrew the gopro from whatever mount you're using to access the battery or the card. Also, wish they had married this with an external battery solution to give longer life.
