Hasselblad XCD 135mm f/2.8 Lens
The Hasselblad XCD 135mm f/2.8 Medium Format lens and X Converter 1.7X from Hasselblad is a short telephoto prime bundled with a dedicated 1.7x teleconverter. With X-series mirrorless medium format cameras, the lens itself offers a 105mm equivalent focal length, and when the teleconverter is in place, this equivalent focal length is increased to 178mm. The flattering perspective of the short-tele pairs with the close 3.3' minimum focusing distance to suit photographing close-up subjects, and an advanced optical design helps to realize high clarity and sharpness throughout the focusing range. Like other XCD lenses, the 135mm f/2.8 has an integrated Central Lens Shutter that is capable of shutter speeds up to 1/2000 sec with flash sync at all speeds, and its internal autofocus design can be manually overridden for precise manual focusing control. Additionally, the 75mm Tripod Mount Ring is also included for more stable shooting when working with this lens and teleconverter combination atop a tripod. Included with the 135mm f/2.8 lens is the dedicated X Converter 1.7x; a 1.7x teleconverter that offers an effective focal length of 226mm, or 178mm equivalent to full-frame sensors. The converter has a six elements, four groups optical design and maintains the autofocus, central shutter, and optical performance of the 135mm f/2.8 lens.

The build quality on this lens is amazing, but then again, its a Hasselblad, so no surprise. It is tack sharp wide open and the colour rendition is superb. I purchased it with the 1.7x converter, which essentially gives you a second lens for far less than you would pay for a Hasselblad. I recommend using it on a tripod, as hand held it tends to hunt for focus quite a bit. You can do it, but it is a challenge. This lens would be great for portraiture and for nature still life photos. If you can place yourself in a stable location and then choose the area you want to focus on as opposed to seeing and then focusing, you can expand it's usage greatly.Medium focus isn't for everyone; it tends to make you slow down and think about your shot rather than just point and ... MoreThe build quality on this lens is amazing, but then again, its a Hasselblad, so no surprise. The Hasselblad 135mm was astonishingly cool for portrait work. Very light weight as well which I was not expecting. Would definitely rent again unless I could afford to buy it.

I added the x Converter 1.7x when I ordered the XCD 135 to get a maximum telephoto option. It did take a little reading to make sure I had the converter and lens installed correctly. With the 1.7 converter, it is more difficult to use the camera system as a pure hand held option.I have been impressed with the quality and level of shutter noise with the 135mm lens. The clarity of the images produced is amazing.
I am very happy with this lens which is now primarily being used for headshots. It is fast to focus with only a small amount of hunting in low light conditions. The images are very crisp, what you would expect from a Hasselblad and it also connects well with my X2D as well as a 907X. It is a little bit heavy, but I am mostly shooting this tethered and am not carrying it around much outside of the studio. I still prefer prime lenses to zooms, but my commercial work tends to be very predictable. This is not a sports lens. It is a fine portrait lens and I am happy to have it.
Keeping in mind, I use this mostly action work - this lens has been my absolute go-to in every situation. In fact, if I could only have one lens on my x1D system, I would choose this without hesitation. From portraits to action and even landscapes, this lens always delivers.
I love this lens. Having the f/2.8 aperture is wonderful for creating some real separation, and the sharpness is outstanding. The TC does little to detract from the sharpness and truly gives you two lenses in one. It is not convenient in the field to remove or reinstall the TC though [it is bulky and an awkward shape], so I find myself trying to assess most advantageous FOV ahead of time. The X1D sensor, like that of most mirrorless cameras, is a known dust magnet. So I try to avoid changing lenses in field if possible. But aside from that, and the poorly sized lens foot, it's an A+. As to the tripod collar lens foot, be forewarned it is too narrow for RRS brackets, as well as Rollei and Arca-Swiss. I have not tried it on every clamp/head I own, but so far, it will ... MoreI love this lens. As to the tripod collar lens foot, be forewarned it is too narrow for RRS brackets, as well as Rollei and Arca-Swiss. I have not tried it on every clamp/head I own, but so far, it will not work, with any adjustment, on RRS QR, RRS screw clamp, Rollei screw clamp, or A-S L60 quick release lever clamp. It's simply too narrow. I may well be doing something wrong—I've got good experience with that—but all my other equipment fits those clamps just fine. I have read, but not confirmed, that a RRS MPR-73 solves the problem.
This is the only telephoto from the XCD lineup and it's a great one. Images are sharp to the corners and still have high contrast when shooting toward the sun. It becomes pretty vignette-free stopping down from f/5.6, and the converter doesn't affect sharpness in my eyes, giving you two long teles in one. I can use the same filters as my 21mm and 25-75mm, but one thing I can't use is the collar. If you plan to use the collar, know that it's incompatible with Arca Swiss. You'll need a separate plate to do that. It's something I wish Hasselblad added, as it's yet another piece I have to research to see what to get and lug around steep mountain trails. It's the only thing negative about the entire package, but the lens, itself, is top notch.
If you're looking at this lens you already know what it is. Reviewers are right: don't buy it without the converter. That said, it being a hassy lens its a brick!. NB: the foot on the tripod collar is NOT standard size and you will need an adapter of some sort. and you'll want those legs with the adapter in place. Without, the X1d is hand holdable with this lens . Just takes a moment to find that grip - and I'm a manual focus kind of guy( PEAKING!) This aint a sport lens as the X1D ii is not a sports camera. It's nice that the elements move within the barrel. As I said in the beginning, if you're reading this you already know what this lens is all about. Like all the XCD lenses this one is excellent. Great to have 2.8 at the 135 length. Focus is accurate and relatively fast for HB. Very sharp and beautiful color. But even with the extender the results are still sharp with little loss of quality. Of course you give up some aperture speed. I was able to hand hold the 135 by itself and even got some decent shots hand held with the extender. But of course for best quality you need a tripod, especially with the extender. This comco does include a tripod collar which works well.
