Henson Shaving AL13 De Safety Razor Aircraft Aluminum
The AL13 razors have a narrower opening than the AL13-M razors and are therefore perfect for sensitive skin and delicate areas of your body. The AL13 is made from aerospace-grade aluminum and designed with utmost precision to present the blade at the most optimal shaving angle without exposing the blade too much. This allows the blade to glide perfectly over the skin, completely avoiding shaving irritations. To guarantee this precision and exceptional quality, the Henson safety razors are manufactured in Henson’s aerospace facility in Canada. A facility where components for the Mars Rover and International Space Station are also produced. Utmost precision With other brands, the blade of a safety razor is often exposed too much. More exposure means the blade can make small, unexpected movements more quickly, causing it to pull on your hair, resulting in irritation. The blade exposure and blade angle of the Henson Safety Razor are precisely machined with a tolerance of up to 0.005 mm! This ensures an unparalleled shaving experience. No clogging The unique design of the head features various exit channels designed to remove hair, water, and shaving soap. By simply holding the razor under the tap for a moment, you can easily rinse away all the shaving soap and hairs and prevent clogging. The AL13 safety razors come standard with 5 pieces of Astra Platinum Double Edge Blades.

This is a highly engineered and well manufactured shaving DE razor. I was thoroughly impressed by it. There is no familiar shaving crackle of the hair being cut by the razor in traditional DE razors. The feel is very similar to cartridge shavers. To get the best shave you have to stretch your skin to allow the stubble to come out for a close shave. Lightweight and the supplied RK blades shaves well. I love it!

I am not a new user to DE shaving, owning several Parkers, 2 Tataras, a few Rockwells, Merkurs and other lesser known brands.A friend has bought a Henson Al3-Mild version and felt that it was way too gentle, and not effficient enough, requiring more than a few passes to get that BBS shave. So I got the Henson AL13-Medium and while to me, still feel very gentle (comparable to a Rockewell set at 3 / Plate 3) performs more like a 4 or 5 setting and easily clear stubble, giving you that perfect BBS without too many passes.Works best when paired with the sharper blades, like Bic Chrome Platiunm, Feathers, Super Irridiums or Gillette Nacets.

I shave my entire face and head every day. I've used a Merkur 34c for a while, and while I've been pleased with it overall on my facial shave, I've been disappointed at times with the results shaving my head. I heard the Henson AL13 was a good head shaving razor, and after several shaves I agree. It does fine on my face as well, but after years of trying the HeadBlade, cartridge razors, and several safety razors, this is by far the best head shaving solution I've found. I've used the RK, Astra, King C Gillette and Lord blades so far, all with excellent results.

The handle is beautiful and comfortable to work with. The large head makes it difficult to shave in small areas like the upper lip. I find that the shaver does not shave as close as a cartage. With a cartage I can shave every other day. With Henson I have to shave every day. However I get a lot of razor burn with a cartage and do not get it with Henson. Also when I don't shave for a few days Henson does a better job as the blade does not get clogged with hair. When you factor in the cost savings I feel Henson is an overall better shaver.
I have owned this razor for three years. Initially the razor worked as advertised - light, good shaving angle, easy to clean, etc. However, now it is wearing out. The company suggests that you unscrew the top a few turns every time you shave to dry out the blade which I did. Unbeknownst to me was the aluminum in the screw socket starts to break down. Now the razor is hard to screw down tightly. (If it is not ******* down properly you start to get nicks.) I thought I could put some light oil on it to alleviate the problem but that is only a temporary fix. Finally the razor ceased on me where I had to use channel locks and pliers to unscrew the blade. I had to go back and use my $40 adjustable Merkur razor which is about 8 years old. Word to the wise, do not spend ... MoreI have owned this razor for three years. The company should have put some coating on this product so the screw mechanism would not break down.
This is not a flashy looking razor. The Canadian Henson aerospace machining company put all their effort into simplicity, function, and making each one precise with their carefully controlled processes. I now have 3 of these and don't currently plan to try other razors. I picked up the version 2 medium this time, in the interest of researching if it is worthwhile to upgrade from version 1, which I have in mild and medium. The V2 is a bit more efficient and has some subtle tweaks to add to comfort. If you have a version 1, I don't think you absolutely need to upgrade, but I am glad I did. Main thing I noticed is the V2(New England Shave sells only V2, which is good) is a bit more efficient than V1. The mild is best for peach fuzz, people new to double edge shaving, and body/head shaving. Get some samples of blades....they are cheap, to find what works best with your specific skin-whisker combo. For me, my best blade in this razor is the Personna "Lab blue" Comfort Coated blades, or the BIC blades, but everyone is different. If you want a no drama, easy care, gets the job done, no defects razor, this is the one. You will not regret getting it. If you want a heavier or different shape handle, this has standard threads and you can buy after market stainless steel handles.
With half a dozen mild razors in my shave den, I figured I was set for life, keep the wife happy with a small razor collection. She put her foot down at 50 soaps. I expect and get great mild shaves from my Feather AS-D2, Vector, Rocnel mild, Weber, Timeless 0.68, Krave A. But I bought a Henson medium, a razor I've been looking for: the holy grail. The Henson medium razor has the mildness of a Feather, precision of the Timeless, feel of the Vector, Krave and Weber - all attributes all in one. The Henson is easy to navigate in tight spots under my nose. I've shaved with the Henson for a week and have no nicks or weepers. The blade feel is beyond words - it is perfect. My husband rarely likes any of the gifts that I give him -- he is picky. When I got this razor for him, he was so pleased with it, he emailed the person who sold it to me with the following:You assisted my wife Amy with the purchase of a new razor on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I was under the weather and unable to be there in person. My wife has come to Merz every time she's been in Chicago for a number of years and has shared many positive stories with me about her experiences there.I have had very little experience with double edged razors, and the Personna razor that my barber sold me many years ago was no longer opening and closing with ease, making the blades all but impossible to replace. So I really had no real frame of reference for the difference in shaving performance that the Henson would offer.I am over the moon with the level of light, smooth precision that the Henson brings to my shaving experience. I am currently using it with the Feather Hi-Stainless blades I had previously purchased, and the difference between the Henson and Personna is night and day. I have an alum block that would see regular use when I was using the Personna, and so far I foresee no need to bother with it using the Henson.Thank you very much for your recommendation. I look forward to using this razor for a long time.
I've been shaving with an electric razor for the last few years after trying to get away from disposables and cartridge razors but it no longer held a charge and instead of spending $200-$300 on a new one I decided to give the AL13 a try. I was skeptical about how gentle it would be but was pleasantly surprised. I was worried about being covered in knicks but the experience was overall easy. I am glad to produce less waste as I am certain this razor will last longer than me and the blades can be recycled. As a bonus my wife was very pleased with the scent left behind by the shaving cream.
