I just got an EF400 and really like it. I had an ares II into a soloist 3XP but after listening to both a lot I decided to keep the EF 400 and sell the ares II and soloist since together they were almost 4 times more expensive. Its only drawback is lack of multiple inouts, but all I use is USB so thats no problem for what it use it for.

Loved it from the first moment i heard it. So much energy in the sound. In the high gain (or even NOS) mode you will hear a full, rich sound that is just lively. I use them with my Focal Celeste. the Fiio K7 comes close and the IFI Zen Dac 2 comes even closer (especially with their base button and power matching engaged) but still the Hifiman just hits another level of fullness. Only gripe is the limited input (USB only). the K7 lets u get a signal from USB, Optical etc..) but it does have the USB-C port which is v nice. Get this and lets the party for your ears begin.
Very enjoyable. Mainly use in NOS mode. Now I need aGood or Very Good over ear headphones.
My desktop HiFi journey started with HiFiMAN EF 400 & today it went kaput.
When it comes to audio, there are really 2 tiers and 2 camps most people fall into more or less.In tier 1 we have the aspiring audiophile eager to build up their system; always eager to hear hidden details, more dynamic sound and drink from the chalice of audio nectar they so often hear mentioned in reviews of gear they can only **** after. In tier 2 we have the established audiophile. They've been at this for a while and their knowledge and expectations come not from a hype generating social media or publication campaign, but instead from years of experiences in dinning at both the table of disappointment and triumph. You should know for the sake of context that I am in the second tier I just described. With that said the two camps are easy to comprehend but ... MoreWhen it comes to audio, there are really 2 tiers and 2 camps most people fall into more or less.In tier 1 we have the aspiring audiophile eager to build up their system; always eager to hear hidden details, more dynamic sound and drink from the chalice of audio nectar they so often hear mentioned in reviews of gear they can only **** after. In tier 2 we have the established audiophile. They've been at this for a while and their knowledge and expectations come not from a hype generating social media or publication campaign, but instead from years of experiences in dinning at both the table of disappointment and triumph. You should know for the sake of context that I am in the second tier I just described. With that said the two camps are easy to comprehend but much harder to understand until you reach tier 2. The camps being 1) those who want to hear the "nuances and details" and 2) those who want to hear the "music". Again, for context I am in camp 2. So then what about the Hifiman EF-400? Well, it will satisfy both tiers and both camps and up to this point I have only ever experienced one other piece of audio equipment so likely to do that. My chain for context is a 2018 Mac mini - Roon - Qobuz/Local (DSD, FLAC) - Wireworld Chroma 8 - Hifiman EF-400 being fed by a Pangea Audio AC 14 MkII SE power cable. Headphones used have been the 3 I use for amp auditions, HD 700, HD 650, and HD 660s and the I.E.M. has been the Moondrop Aria's.The sound is amazing! The most notable features that make and immediate impression is the bass control and presence and the midrange. I have owned and used, to name a few, the A90, CMA12, Fiio K9 ESS, Mytek Liberty and Monolith THX DAC amp among several others. NOTHING, literally nothing, has ever driven my headphones with this type of authority. It's not a matter of a boost to the bass, mids or treble, it's about how it grabs the driver and makes it submit regardless of gain and regardless of volume. HD 700's are a very revealing headphone and the bass is extremely linear. More often than not it's a headphone that can come off as light on bass but with the EF-400 it absolutely astonished me. It's not bassy all of a sudden but the bass becomes apart of the music instead of a "sound" you simply notice. Moving over to the HD 650's and given the EF 400's subtle warm and very organic sound I would've been worried they might sound veiled and wooly. Not a chance. They actually sound as clear as I've ever heard them but the timbre and accuracy of tones is to be blunt, dumb, ******, silly good. Then add to that the micro details that you can normally hear on them though usually they're quite soft are now much better resolved and a part of the song itself and not just an accompanying sound. The HD 660's were like trying both of the previous two headphones together. Sounds come from areas in the headphone that had only ever been "dead" spaces before where no sounds ever came from. Moving lastly to the Aria's, plugging straight into the 3.5mm port because yeah, it has one, I expected to hear the noise floor of the amp. So imagine the look on my face when I heard dead silence. The Aria's were fantastic and again, that strong, full bodied control of the drivers was still obvious even on my I.E.M.'s.With that out of the way a little bit about the sound. I am afraid to say it sounds warm since I don't want to give you the wrong impression that it is thick or slow or dark sounding. It isn't. It doesn't have that "bit for bit" sound that I hate about THX amps either. It truly sounds analogue. Its presentation is unique offering a wide soundstage with some of, if not the smoothest midrange I have ever heard. It largely separates itself from low end amps and THX amps by punching straight out of mid-fi and into high-end when comes to dynamics. It is a very engaging sound that is highly detailed and yet not analytical. This is the DAC amp for those who want to listen to music in all of its glorious detail. Drums, dear God the drums. Just play some drums already. The tone and decay of a taiko or bass drum rivals my speakers. Cymbals do not have that metallic sizzle that I had to spend over 1k just to get away from. It really is outstanding to sound this good below the $1500 price point. The con's/compromises is a short list. I wish it was all black. It ONLY has USB B and USB C inputs, no AUX in, no optical or SPDIF. It is ONLY line out, there's no preamp. The low gain isn't as low as I'd like it. Only 24/192 with no DSD. Some of those I actually needed but if like me, you can live without them or work around these shortcomings, you're going to have one heck of a smile on your face when you sit down to listen. FWIW I read in a review on Head-fi to burn it in for 150 hours. I liked it out the box but the reviewer wasn't BS'ing. It changed way more than I would've expected. Lastly, leave it on 24/7. It sounds noticeably better when it's fully warmed up (it's a R2R thing).
