Best value for a DAC at this price point (not so much for the amp)

This is the exact chain I fell in love with. Can't say about others, but I certainly have convinced myself that what matters is the entire chain. No individual component should be judged stand-alone.It's a no-brainer recommendation below INR 10,000 and even at a higher price point. This is based on the merits of the DAC section only. The single ended amp section is nothing to write home about. You may want to pair this up with the iFi Zen Can in case you are OK with unbalanced connections.

I wasn't impressed much by it , I liked the sound coming out of this i don't know much technical terms but i can definitely hear the difference in Overall Quality. I can only describe the sound as smooth and a tad bit warm.I mainly listen to hip/hop, rap and soft rock. The xbass+ is so good wo making tracks sound muddy. I read it people compared the truebass on the v2 and preffered the xbass+ as it more punchy and controlled. I am no basshead btw but i enjoy it time to time.Only minor con imo was not including the 6.3mm adapter. No brainer dac at this pricepoint. Burr-Brown is exaggerating. Didn't quite suited with 560s, lost soundstage and imaging.

Amplification part is good but lost a amount of sound stage. Didn't expected this from a external DAC/AMP. Ticking sound when connecting and disconnecting. Exaggerating burr brown DAC for a warm sound didnt quite fit well. Imaging lost in transalation. Some voices becames too forwarded. Pairing it with 560s btw. Better to go with 599 if you want to pair 560s with this. Volume knob is great. Xbass feature is good, presents bass exactly when necessary. bass won't be muddy and doesn't overlaps any frequency. Update with latest firmware.

Decent desktop amp/dac
11 October 2022

Going from a dongle dac shanling ua1 pro this one resulted into a boosted bass. At first i felt the sound was muffled compared to ua1 pro with my akg361. however, after listening for sometime I realised the instruments sounded much fuller. Need to but the impedence match switch to on mode with over ear headphones. however there was a little channel imbalance at lower volumes. Overall a decent product. One thing for sure with over ear headphones it sounds best with desktop dacs. akg361 is low impedence 35 ohms still there was a noticeable difference. also the device would not power from mobile phones w/o separate dc power. so was using with my mac which resulted into some inconvenience while listening in bed.

Faulty Unbalanced Out

Okay, first things first. The hype around XBass is real. As someone who appreciates crisp bass, hitting the dedicated toggle on the chassis made the listening experience more fun - especially for genres that benefit from low end punch. On to the rest of the product:A. I don’t have any major complaints about the general build either; if I were to knit pick, I’d say that the buttons could have been integrated to tighter tolerancesC. I tried multiple adapters, source devices, and IEMs and closed backs - nothing worked like it should have. I have had to send back the unit to HPZ, and while they have been cooperative, I find the process to be painfully slow and cumbersome. Will update my review once I can test the primary function this Dac/Amp was designed for.

It is a really good starting point.

This dac manages to decode most of High Res audio formats. Built in features are really useful. Specially 'X-Bass' adds fun to listening experience.Output analog state have very low noise floor, as per measurements. But its amplification is low. You need an Amp down the line to drive demanding headphones and passive speakers . All this is manageable but the amount of accessories it comes with really disappoints. The usb cable is very short in length. You also need a 6.3mm to 3.5mm adaptor to connect headphones.

Poor quality dac.
29 July 2022

This is not even good to be in the budget category. It's making the acoustic guitar sound unnatural. Some songs sound okay, but some sound very flat, even with the bass extension on. The dac is doing something but not in a refined way. Looks good but sounds bad. I have a 10 year old arcam Bluetooth dac which sounds better. I have a tidal connection and thought the wired connection using Zen dac air will sound better, but I am disappointed.

Simple, Clean, Rich sound for under $100 Definitely the best bang for buck
26 March 2022

This dac/amp combo is simple and straightforward. The analog volume control is a treat and you can definitely squeeze the max out of 30ohm headphones. The sound is very neutral leaning towards warm. This makes it a great amp for long listening as it is not fatiguing. If you are a basshead the Xbass works great at plumping up the low end. I have 5 amps and I find myself gravitating towards the IFI ZEN Air the most. These can even drive my 300ohm HD6xx which is usually hard to do for this pricepoint.

Under powered with a persistent clicking noise
26 December 2022

This unit can't really push 300ohm headphones like my HD 600's well and has a constant clicking noise. I should have returned this junk product but i'm lazy. My Gigabyte Mobo with the alc 1220 codec pushes headphones better and can handle up to 600 ohm sets, so this was an ill advised purchase from the start. Not recommended.

Value for good DAC and Amp combo

Compact and at the current prices this is an unbeatable option for beginner to mid-level DAC-Amp combos. Those seeking even higher quality Amp can stack up at a later stage depending on their headphone choices. I prefer simple setups as have found the pursuit of expensive DACs following the law of diminishing returns, but a higher powered AMP on top of this DAC does go a long way. I am currently using this for my DT 1990 pro and can listen at comfortable levels with power match. Connects and works well with a Macbook and I haven't seen any audio/video time lags. Small and light product that I can even choose to carry in laptop bag should there be a need. I do use an external 5v supply and that improves the sound quality and output measurably, but in a small way. ... MoreCompact and at the current prices this is an unbeatable option for beginner to mid-level DAC-Amp combos.
