Hikari - Algae Wafers - Mini - 22g
Hikari, the pre-eminent aquarium specialty fish food brand has more than 130 years experience in producing premium aquatic diets. Hikari Mini Algae Wafers are a perfect balance of premium ingredients containing high levels of vegetable protein. Formulated to promote growth and desirable form in Plecostomus, other algae eating fish and most herbivorous species, this diet is also suitable for snails, and crustaceans. The uniquely shaped disc sinks rapidly and retains its shape, allowing less aggressive species to access its nutrition. The formula contains two highly usable natural nutrient sources, pure-cultured spirulina and chlorella algae.

This fish food is an amazing brand to choose. I have used it for years and not only does it benefit my bottom feeders but also my other species of fish too. Being a plant based food it helps with digestion and my fish love it. A company that has studied for years in the fish industry, they have perfected the formula and adds an excellent balance to their diet. I highly recommend as an addition to your aquarium food selection.

I have used hikari algae wafers for alot of years. The price had steadily increased over the years which made me look at some less expensive options. Unfortunately finding wafers that all the fish in my 40 tanks love isn't easy. When they don't like the cheaper wafers it just makes a mess in the tank. I seem to always find my way back to hikari, and the 2.2# gives a little better bang for the buck. I go through one of those bags pretty much every month. Guess I will just have to suck it up and pay for the good stuff-- Hikari. Very good!

If I'm being totally honest, my fish haven't paid much attention to the food (otos & hillstream loach). I only feed it when I seem to have zero algae in the tank. I have never seen the fish go after it. I gave some to my boyfriend for his new setup, and his otos didn't seem to care either. That being said, the food checks all the boxes for me. It does sink well. The wafers are a good size to make sure my fish have food available. The value is also really good. Even the smallest package has lasted me a while. I only give it 4/5 because I can't verify that my fish love eating it even though they love other Hikari products.

Your fish will probably eat Hikari wafers. But if you've ever glanced at the ingredients list and wondered what "dried bakery product" is or why it's in your fish food, you may want to consider other options.Compare, for example, the first ten ingredients in Hikari's Mini Algae Wafers (see product description above) to New Life Spectrum's Algaemax: Chlorella seaweed, Ulva seaweed, red seaweed, kelp, Spirulina, wakame seaweed, whole Antarctic krill, giant squid, whole wheat flour, Eucheuma cottonii seaweed.Your fish will probably eat New Life Spectrum too. If you can't find it at a reasonable price, try other brands like Northfin or Omega One.Inferior ingredients is not my only criticism of Hikari's wafers. The other problem I have with this product is that it clouds water more than similar products from other brands.
I picked these up when I bought my first neocaridina shrimp, not realizing they aren't really marketed for them. Turns out they LOVE them anyway! They sometimes fight over them! Also, when my two betta tanks are too clean to make them happy, I put one wafer in for the nerite snails. I just saw one eating a wafer... usually I just see that it is gone, I've never caught one eating it until today. The wafers do break down after a while BUT for the most part they stay together, and you won't get bits floating around, which I like. It would be great if they had calcium for shrimp shells but since they are more for fish I really can't fault the manufacturer.
Whenever I need to check on my two Plecos, I drop a few of these in the tank and they come out almost immediately. Not sure why this doesn't happen with other wafers, but I stocked up recently and couldn't be happier with these mini wafers. I always have to add extra because my black mollies love them too!
