My 4-star rating is based on two factors: high price and ingredients. I will say however, that I do understand the high price tag - hydrolyzed dog food isn’t cheap and if you find any that is cheap, it probably isn’t legitimate (that’s my opinion and I’m not a vet). I do not like that this food has many, many ingredients that I can’t pronounce and I wish I could give my young dog (who is only two) something different. But this is what he needs, so I just have to put those feels aside. Let me clarify and this food was recommended to me by my vet. In terms of what it has done for my dog, I would currently rate it as a five-star product. He has allergies and a sensitive system, so my vet recommended a hydrolyzed diet, including treats. One bout of colitis threw off his intestines so this was needed to keep everything g calm. I buy the 5 oz cans in the large pallets from Chewy.com (no advertising for them is meant by mentioning them here). I buy the small cans because my dog is 15 lbs and the 5-oz cans are what he can eat through in the 4-day window that the food is good for before it has to be thrown away. There is no reason for me to buy the big cans - it’s a huge waste. I do a combination of this wet food with the same brand and type dry food each morning and evening. It has done wonders for my dog. I will not give an actual recommendation because a vet must do that for your dog and a prescription is needed for this food. But again, this product has helped my dog so much.

Best food for sensitive gut

My 8 year old GSD has struggled with food sensitivity which presents in gut and coat problems ie diarrhea type motions, excessive scratching, odour, hair loss, and generally not looking his handsome best and seeming a bit miserable. This is one of two foods he can eat. The other being Royal Canin Hypoallergenic - Dry. Hills Z/D t is not a cure, but he certainly loves to eat it and teamed up with some medication from the vet, his symptoms seem to dissipate. He is happy and calm. It can be hard to get, especially these days and this can be very stressful. That is why I was so glad to see PetPost had a good supply and a great price AND the delivery was very fast. Thank you.

Wanted something different besides dry food for my dog. But she has food allergies so I bought the Z/D canned food. Shockingly, she likes it and she eats her dry mixed with can food immediately. No shedding and now stomach issues. Glad I gave it a try

Excellent dog food
6 January 2022

I have a 12 yr old Labradoodle who has Pancreatitis, she is also a fussy eater. I tried many types of low fat dog foods, including home cooked food with raw veggies, but nothing worked, her coat lost it's gloss without any fat in her diet. Then I tried this z/d prescription dog food, both the tinned and the dry kibble and we have never looked back. No more flare ups, no more pain and we discovered that she could tolerate a sardine (her favourite treat) in her food without causing her problems, her coat regained it's previous gloss and she is now a very healthy, lively dog again. She's been on this diet now for about 3 years, at one stage we didn't think she'd make old bones, now she is showing no signs of slowing down. A great result.

Life changer for my suffering Newfoundland.
18 July 2021

This food was recommended by my Vet for my Newfoundland that suffers from severe allergies. I have been through 10-15 different foods and he still had terrible itching, biting at his groin and completely covered in dry flakey skin. I started him on the dry formula of this food and I add a few tablespoons of the canned. It has been two weeks and I can't believe the improvement. Finally! A food that has improved my poor boys life so much. It is expensive, especially for a 150lb dog, but absolutely worth it.

My dog would not eat this food willingly
29 August 2022

My dog will not eat this food willingly. I have to force feed him. He hates the smell and the taste. I don't understand why it is so repulsive to my dog. He is going through a rough patch right now. Low Vitamin B12. it stopped the diarrhea but it does not seem like he is thriving on this food.

Not Consistant
8 May 2021

My vet prescribed this for my cocker who has food and skin allergies. My biggest complaint is that the last year orders/batches of food have been inconsistent. One batch of food was usual/normal consistancy and thickness. The next was so moist it was almost runny. And the most recent batch is so dry it crumbles. I don't understand the lack of consistency in the batches of food.

Prefer d/d vs z/d
27 April 2021

I've purchased d/d for my 16 year old shih tzu for the past 10+ years but apparently you don't make that any more. Since she has skin sensitivities I've had to buy your z/d. The z/d consistency is very soft and I'm not able to pulsate it in a mini chopper because it rolls into a ball for a soft ball. My 16 year olds teeth are bad so now I have to take the time to manually chop it into small pieces on a cutting board - it's a messy job. Would love to be able to buy your d/d again.

This dog food changed my fur baby's Life
18 September 2022

My sweet Coton De Tulear I got from a rescue was having major problems with nausea and vomiting. I had tried several dog foods and tips from friends, I took her to the vet and was given a RX to try Hill's Science RX zd dog food. What a difference it has made. She is eating the food so good and it is amazing to see the difference in her. She has not had any more throwing up and also has tons of energy and is very playful now. THANKS!!

Vet Recommended for a Reason
16 August 2021

We have an Irish setter with malabsorption issues. A vet initially prescribed Royal Canin's prescription diet, but when that wasn't available, a different vet recommended the Hill's z/d diet. Our dog tolerates it well, likes the taste, and seems to be in excellent health. We justify the cost as being much more practical than vets' visits, plus peace of mind.
