(326 reviews)

The first book in Sarah J. Maas's #1 bestselling Crescent City series. Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night-until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She'll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths. Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose-to assassinate his boss's enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he's offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach. As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City's underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion-one that could set them both free, if they'd only let it. With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom-and the power of love.

Got this book today and it was delivered fast! It was packed securely and no dents seen. Loving the covers btw. Take note that this is a TRADE PAPERBACK. ❤️ When it comes to books, I usually give reviews after reading them but this will be an exception since I was so excited to receive them and it deserves to be reviewed asap. lol Im still reading the ACOTAR series and Crescent City series will be my next. Thanks National Bookstore!

The best most intense and immersive story I’ve read in a loooong time!!! Truly a wild, and empowering roller coaster ride through all the emotions and the brilliant plot made it all so amazing and beautiful and heartbreaking and thrilling. Sarah J Maas truly never disappoints. I’m in utter awe of this book and it’s character. Definitely a story I’ll remember and draw on when I need to be reminded that hard thing can be overcome and letting go means setting free even when the pain and weight of loss is crushing.

This was the first book I read from Sarah J Maas, and it brought me to the universe of Fae, shapeshifters, angels. Such an amazing book. It hooked me to the romantasy genre and I knew I had to start over and do it the “right way” (if you know you know). Book is around 700 pages, but you don’t feel it. Once it “wraps” its hands around you, there is no going back. After you finish with the book you won’t stop thinking about it.

Beautiful cover and compelling story

If you have the money to splurge on this beauty I would highly recommend as the cover art is impeccable. As for the story it does take a bit to get into compared to her previous works. There is very complex world building in the beginning that can be confusing but the further along you get in the book the more accustomed you become. The main protagonist I can understand why some people wouldn't particularly like her as her character does have some rough edges, particularly in the beginning, but like many other great books you get to see her character develop and you grow to like her. She's a self assured and confident woman, which is something we don't get to see often. Definitely not a damsel in distress.Highly recommend if you don't mind the complex world ... MoreIf you have the money to splurge on this beauty I would highly recommend as the cover art is impeccable. I did not know how much I needed this book in my life, Hel I missed SJM's writing so much and how she can create this massive detailed world but also create character's that are so easy to fall deeply in love with. I have to admit I did dislike Bryce in the beginning but she grew on me, much like Aelin did {sorry not sorry, Feyre} but in the end she was such a rebel, how can you not rally beside her. This book tore my heart to ribbons in the minutes that I read it, I will admit it did have some not so interesting parts but perhaps I was more concerned with that budding relationship between Bryce and Hunt. {I mean hello, let's all admit that was one **** of a ride} Hunt is nothing compared to Rhysand, it's a close call from me. Character development is on point in this one and I do miss SJM's way of making banter between the companions. I will say though Ruhn is quite possibly my favourite character which surprised me so I am keen to see where the next books take them and can we please see more of Tharion because he was such an interesting character. Highly recommend this for all Maas fans. Now give me the next book please because my life is now in utter darkness until it comes out.

For now it's a no for me.

I know everyone loves this book but.... I couldn't do it. I can usually read an entire book in 3 days and after a week and a half I wasn't even past the 20 page mark so I decided to put the book down. For me it was way too much information at first which made it very difficult to follow and made me feel like I was studying for a research paper instead of reading for fun (which is why I read fantasy books). So maybe I'll try again one day but for now it's a no.

MOST AMAZING READ OF THE YEAR

What can I say about this book, other than the fact that it was absolutely perfect in every sense. Sarah J Maas never fails to blow me away and she did it once again with her first-ever debut new adult/ adult novel. I was so impressed with a new world to immerse in and the fantasy elements, character and world-building in this novel are just to die for. As a person who normally doesn't read urban fantasies, I was more than satisfied with the way in which the book takes place in an urban context.AND I can't even begin to explain the characters. Bryce is such a refreshing protagonist with her wild and fiery spirit, she is iconic, sassy and strong and everything in a female character I love to see and represented in books. RED IS JUST GORGEOUS. I love owning and having this on my shelf and can't encourage enough people to read this amazing book. Can't wait to see what else is installed for Hunt and Bryce as the series continues.

One of the best books I've ever read
18 May 2023

This book is amazing!! I have recommended it to every single friend I have and still feel like more people should read it. If you're a fan of Sarah J Maas this series will be no different to the addictive likes of ACOTAR and TOG, but with modern elements that really help switch it up. I reminded me a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with all the mishmash of magical creatures and a strong feminine lead that isn't afraid to get her hands dirty to protect those she loves! 10/10 I wish I could read it for the first time again.

Something new but still wonderfully addictive!

I read ACOTAR before reading this series (which I recommend) and when I started this book I was very thrown by the modernness of it. However after pushing through the first part of the book, the story and characters become much more intriguing and enthralling. These books are more adult than ACOTAR and are set in a very different setting as well. There are still Fae but there are also a number of other magical beings who live in this world so it's much more complex. There is a lot thrown out at you at first but if you just kind of squirrel the information away and keep reading it all becomes much easier to imagine and remember. There are also more mature themes in this series. There are quite a few graphic depictions of some pretty brutal stuff, one scene in the newest book (House of Flame and Shadow) had me gagging and I could barely read it. So far that's the only thing that's really had me cringing but there are definitely quite a few brutal depictions of the terror of this world. Overall I really enjoy this series. It doesn't seem fair to compare it to ACOTAR because it is very different but the writing is just as good as are the romance and fantastical components. But if you are looking for something new to read (or to take your mind off of finishing ACOTAR), definitely check out this series. You won't be disappointed!
