Circular polarizer was introduced in 1980s when auto focus camera became available. Then current auto focusing system had problems when Linear PL filter was used. Today, auto focus system has become so smart that you can use a traditional PL filter without any problems. The industry wants to sell you Circular PL filter because they can charge you more than Linear PL filter. I have taken 100s of pictures with my old linear PL filters on my digital camera with no problems with greater polarizing effect than Circular PL filter. However, without UV filtering element built-in, discoloration by over emphasized blue becomes obvious with some camera equipment especially when dynamic range compression algorithm is utilized. In this line of pursuit for perfection or more natural looking light, I have found this polarizing filter to be very favorable for my style of photography.

This filter is designed for strong light situations, especially eclipses. It works well, is well designed, and screwed into my Fujifilm lens flawlessly. Highly recommended. Adorama delivery was prompt and efficient.

This has a reddish colour cast when it shouldnt affect colour at all. I simply dont know if Hoya quality control is poor or even if this is a Hoya at all. The colour cast is consistent, and yes, I am just OC enough to compare with and without to make certain. This can be corrected, especially with RAW files, but it shouldnt have to be. As it happens I need it now and theres no time to look elsewhere. The thing is, at 41, it isnt cheap. I do wonder if it is genuine as I have older Hoyas that are all fine.

No body is perfect. Online not very user friendly. Fellow on the phone was great. Very helpful.
Used it at the solar eclipse in Dallas this year. Worked fine when there was some cloud cover, but not dark enough when everything was clear unless I really slowed the shutter speed to where I couldn't hand-hold anymore. Had to top it with a variable density filter.
I purchased this as an all around ND filter for extremely long exposures and not just for solar eclipses. It seems to be fairly neutral in color. Build quality is good, just like most Tiffen products. Optical quality seems pretty good as well.
I used this for the April 8th solar eclipse and it worked perfect. Hoya makes great filters as I have several and this did what it was supposed to do. It's great just to take pictures of the sun and observe sunspots on the surface. A great filter.
I got this for the solar eclipse earlier this year, and at that time it was unreturnable. I suppose that is because some people try to use this just that one day and try to return it. In any case, I figured that I would get my money's worth out of it and have been using it to take photos of sunspots and very very bright light sources. I can now take detailed macros of LED emitters, lightbulbs, and things like that. This works very well, and I got a bunch of step up rings so that I could use it on all my other lenses.
What's not to like? I mean, if you want to take shots directly into the sun without burning out your chip (or your eye, if you use a DSLR) then this is the only option going. As you can see from the photo, it does the job - that was taken with the Fuji 150-600 plus 2X TC for a focal length of 1200MM at f16, and since the Fuji is a DX camera that's essentially equivalent to an 1800MM lens on an FX chip. So, figure about a 36 power telescope. And the cropping (other than making it square) was minimal. The point is, having taken a few dozen shots (as the clouds were moving along each was a bit different) there was no ill effect to the sensor in the camera.

Hoya 52mm Pro ND16 Filter
The ACCU-ND technology in the Hoya PROND filters yields a truly neutral color balance that will not add any noticeable color-cast to your images. The Hoya PROND series is aimed at the still photography and HDSLR video markets. The series provides 9 filters from two stop to 10 stop light reduction. The Metallic ACCU-ND coating on the PROND filters do not color shift as you move from one density to the next, a common problem with other series of neutral density filters. Now you can set your white balance once and have the same color balance even if you need to change filters due to changes in lighting, or for creative effect. The PROND filters use Hoyas exclusive clear optical glass that has a metallic ACCU-ND coating front and back to create the neutral density affect. Neutral density filters are designed to reduce the amount of light entering your camera lens and should not have any other effect on the image. Reducing the amount of light allows for the use of wider apertures or slower shutter speeds for creative and dramatic effect in bright lighting conditions. All Hoya PROND filters have a low-profile one piece aluminum frame. The thin frame keeps the glass secure and parallel to the sensor while allowing it to be used with super-wide angle lenses.
