This printer will not scan to a Macintosh. After several hours of trying to get it to work, I went to the HP support website. Many other users have reported this exact problem for several months now, and HP has done nothing about it. I bought three of these and by the time we figured this all out, we were beyond B and H's generous return period. This is HP's fault, not B and H. Terrible product from a terrible company. I wish HP would fix the software!

As a consumer I don't care about HP's profits, I want to have good product, which is easy to install, which will work stably without bugs etc. This product is absolutely out of this range.

We had an older HP Laserjet printer for close to 15 years that worked exceptionally well. It was a true work horse as we do a lot of printing. If not for the transfer roll going bad it would still be in service. Anyway it ran it's course, and it was time for a new one. A computer tech we deal with suggested this new HP printer and we could not be happier. Copies, scans, and prints very quickly, and smoothly. It's extremely quiet and the print quality is excellent. Highly recommend this printer and hoping it delivers for a good many years like our previous machine !
So I've only had the printer for a day, so I can't really speak to anything other than the installation, and my initial observations... I'm upgrading from an HP 477fdw (which was a good printer until the fuser went out after ~2 years, which is like a $600 fix...). Installation isn't intuitive at all, at least via USB (I didn't test the ethernet install option). The unit does not come with a USB cable, so you'll have to bring your own... and as others have mentioned, it exclusively supports USB 2.0, so if your computer's ports are 3.0, you may run into some compatibility issues. You'll need a flash drive if you plan on updating the firmware (which HP recommends)... You'll need a flash drive if you plan on updating the firmware (which HP recommends)... The slider thing in tray 1 is flimsy, and I didn't notice that they added a little clip on the right side that has to be pressed in order to move the slider, so the left side immediately popped off, and from what I can tell, that won't be fixable without taking the thing apart... and lastly, the process to get automatic duplex printing to work is pretty dumb. By default, within the printer's preferences, it makes it look like manual duplex printing is your only option. I print double sided ~20-30 times a week, and having to manually flip the pages would have been a deal-breaker. I checked multiple websites for descriptions for this unit, and they all indicated that it does automatic duplex printing, so I continued to search for a resolution. I eventually discovered that you have to go into the printer's properties, and indicate that it has a duplex unit installed. The fact that it's not set to installed by default is pretty silly. Other than that, it seems like an adequate (and expensive) all in one business printer. No clue how long it's going to last, though, because it definitely feels flimsier than my previous printer, and that one only lasted ~2 years.
Pretty sure this printer will last me 30 years, but it definitely took some time to install. I also purchased the 3JN69A Jetdirect 3100w wireless accessory, so that i can print from anywhere in my house, and even from my phone. If you hard wired (Ethernet, USB) this printer you don't need to do anything, it should automatically connect, and setup nicely for you. This is for wireless install help, just keep in mind, when installing these steps:1) update firmware, either download the "update files" from hp website on to a thumb drive and connect it to the printer and goto settings, update firmware and it will read off the thumb drive, or just connect hard wire via Ethernet, if your using a usb connection it gets iffy, best to use a Ethernet cable. (this is the option i took)2) plug wireless adapter in front usb, not the back one( for some reason it cant recognize it, but you can move it to the back usb later if needed)3) Make an admin account using the wireless ip address, use those same credentials to sign into the printer via touch screen panel. To find the ip address go to settings in the touch screen panel, then network, click wireless and it should show info there with the ip address.4) Get the passcode, and log in all devices you want printing to it.Should be good to go after that!
This printer acquisition was a DISASTER. The software is incompatible with Mac OSX 12.x and I learnt on (numerous calls over 4 days) that there are outstanding software issues by HP+Apple to resolve these issues, but they are not yet resolved…1) The printer was not “auto detected” using native Mac OSX2) It had to be “discovered” using HP’s own software (then I could print)3) However the “fax” is not discoverable4) HP had to ask me to use separate software to scan documents into the Mac,5) then had to work around email server issues to configure the printer to email me the scanned documentsAll in all a TOTAL MESS for an “advanced MFP for Office use"
I purchased this printer and at the request of the chat person, I also purchased the HP JetDirect 3100 BLE NFC WRLS ACCY WiFi adaptor for it. This made WiFi printing work, but I purchased an MFP printer so I could scan over WiFi as well. No luck. No matter what I tried, the software would not work. I used the HP print and scan doctor and the scan software was written for Windows 8 and 8.1. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it is worth taking note. The print and scan doctor found my firmware was out of date. Ok, no problem, I downloaded and installed the firmware. I am not exactly sure what differences the new firmware made, but the scanner was still greyed out on the scan doctor. I exhausted every possibility to get this to work. Just in case you wanted to use a wired connection, that didn't work either. If you have a server, the SMB and scan to email functions will probably work, but this is a printer I wanted to use for home. No server to connect to and I wasn't going to set on up. Being a sys admin, I could do it, but sadly, I don't think so. Maybe for a work environment.
I bought this printer about 3 weeks ago to reduce the clutter in my Study as it included a built-in scanner. It replaced my m254 and G4050. Apart from normal A4 duplex printing I print Birthday and Christmas cards. Please be aware as I was not that this printer does NOT print A5 in duplex according to the HP engineer . A retrograde step as my m254 did. Very disappointing especially considering the cost. Also be aware that C6 envelopes MUST be loaded as per instructions and completely opposite to the m254. Early days but needed HP Support initially so was without a printer and scanner for over 4 days. Very good support from Matthew at Printerland. Hopefully I will eventually be pleased with this printer.
We use both macs and pcs here. I previously reported that we could not get the printer to scan to a Mac after several days of effort. So we moved them (we bought three) to another office where we use pcs. It won't print in color from a pc! I believe the hardware is good, but HP's print drivers are terrible.I am a long time b and h customer. I know this is not b and h's fault. But it is time for somebody to step in and step up and do something about this phoney baloney product. Can someone lean on hp a bit and get them to fix their defective software?I have a lot of money invested in these high tech boat anchors. This thing deserves a minus 5 stars!
