HP LaserJet Pro M404dn - Printer

I'm an occasional printer user. I do not have to print often but sometimes my girlfriend needs to print at once a big batch of papers. After spending a lot of money on ink cartridges and living through painful days of having my inkjet printer ink nozzles dry up and require constant check-ups, especially after not being used for a few months, I decided to switch to Laser. No regrets - this printer prints very fast on both sides of paper. It was quick to connect to WiFi as well. I'm yet to replace my cartridge after almost 500 pages. This model is B&W only and doesn't include a scanner on top but for the price - it's totally worth it, unless you require these functions.

HP printers are the best in built quality and reliability. After 22 years of using the HP LaserJet 2200dn the on/off switch broke and was not able to find a replacement - sad. But it gave us many, many thousand perfect pages without a single jam! However, HP Printer Premium Paper (24lb) was always used! Bought this LaserJet Pro M404dw last week with the 4-year extended warranty and tech support: Comments: 1) is not as fast as HP states of 40ppm, much much slower than my old printer; 2) setup/driver download/install was easy and fast; my dell PC recognized it immediately; 3) however, the wireless connection to my iPhone was a nightmare, until finally it connected; 4) the extended warranty with Technical Support is provided by "Asurion", which is physically located in ... MoreHP printers are the best in built quality and reliability. The issue is only with the wireless portion, which is not being recognized! They said "return the printer is new so go back to the store and get another one"! I requested to be transferred to a technician. d) the other two non-techs (even thought I requested to speak with a tech) said they couldn't help me, so I requested again to be transferred to a tech. They did not understand, so I hang up, e) Called and for the fifth (5) time, then was able to speak with tech (yeah!) who's English was poor, BUT he paid attention to what I was explaining to him, he was very helpful (Francis). Francis understood and was able to guide me circumnavigating the wireless portion and in 25 minutes I was up and running and printing from my iPhone! Thanks to Francis! f) the printer is very quite printing and is not on "quiet" mode. g) is small (15 x 14.06 x 8.5 in) and only weigh 18.8lbs, w/o box. h) IF during setup you set the printing to "fine" it will yield 1200 x 1200 dpi, which is an outstanding resolution! Have had HP printers form 30+ years and obviously a fan after trying other brands. An HP fan for business and home (now retired). Plan to continue buying HP printers through "Staples" because of their great service. However, will not order/buy again the extended "Asurion" plans - too much stress. Do recommend this printer. If you do NOT want fast printing speeds. If you want faster printing speeds, then choose the HP M507dn.

I chose to set it up with a static IP address.The printer was easy to put together and has a very solid feel. Flimsy hardware always worries me. I also noted that the printer does not support WiFi. While I know that WiFi can be secured, I prefer to not give hackers a target to test their skills against. Lack of WiFi is my second favourite feature of this printer.This is easily the fastest printer I have ever owned, and of course, that is my favorite feature. A larger cassette, which will hold a ream, is available as an option. On the other hand, graphics are not very good. Of course, not being in color makes graphics suffer, but there is a suggestion of jagginess in lines that should be smoother.One thing worries me, and that is the statement, `Dynamic security enabled printer.` From HP`s website, `Certain HP printers use cartridges that have security chips or electronic circuitry. Cartridges using a non-HP chip or modified or non-HP circuitry* may not work, and those that work today may not work in the future.` I`m not sure I accept the assumption that a specially crafted chip in a printer cartridge can insert malware into my network. While I know HP would prefer I buy their cartridges, that choice must be mine, and I expect to be able to disable that security `feature` if necessary.I remain a fan of all-in-one color printers, because when you need color, a scanner, or a fax machine, that`s what you need. But for sheer printing speed, this printer is hard to beat. I think it could easily serve as the workhorse printer for a workgroup, with a color all-in-one printer available to use as needed. I would not hesitate to recommend this printer.
