Still learning about unit. One issue I'm having is reading the information such as speed which has a dark background. That makes it hard to see sitting back at the trolling motor. Haven't found how to change background colors. This is also true for seeing the boat icon on the blue background of the lake.

This is my second purchase of this unit because I love it so much. Amazing how far things have come. It will connect with your trolling motor to steer and keep at a certain depth or distance from the shore allowing you to actually fish instead of running the trolling motor. You won’t regret this purchase

I purchased this unit for my pontoon boat. I wired it in myself, as I did for all of my instrumentation. Very easy only an idiot would have issues wiring it in properly. There were no problems with the unit when removed from the packaging. I would suspect any issues like that could be easily exchanged had I encountered an issue. Not wanting to drill holes in my new Polar Kraft to mount the transducer, I have had to wait 2 weeks to get an external transducer mount that I can glue to the transom below the waterline. Then another two weeks before the technician can glue it properly, put it all together and it spells 4 wasted weeks in what I call “short-season Maine.” Perhaps someone at Humminbird can alert us to this issue AND include the proper external glue to attach the transducer so we don’t have to drill holes in our boat.
It has a nice display. I like that it can be split between three functions. Lots of settings, so read the manual and go through the set up step by step. Once it’s set up, it easy to use and intuitive on the water. Works great for us in the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries where we use it mostly for depth and GPS.
This is the 3rd Helix 5" that I have purchased. One of the first two was a KVD edition. Caught lots of fish with those two and I'm looking forward to getting this new one on the water. Thank you Hummingbird for a dependable product for every fishing person.
Great product but takes time to learn all the features and how to access and manipulate them. Split screen with sonar and chart has been very helpful to locate and mark structure on a small reservoir that has not been mapped. I have not used the chart on waterbodies that have not been mapped so cannot comment on that. I have the maps that come with the unit. Sonar has select frequencies which apparently can be used to improve finding fish. There is an electronic 348 page manual to help get you started. Sonar screen seems nice and clear. I wish it had a sun screen since screen is hard to see when looking into sun. Glad I did not get the imaging package as it would only complicate things that much more. The Image on box is at least twice the size of the actual control head. Image on box displays charts which are not in the box. It is hard to understand the differences between models of Helix 5. If I had understood the features, I may have purchased a model with SI and DI. Although it touts a gimble mount, it doesn’t swivel, there is only one degree of movement.
Briefly tried other fish finders, but they all failed or were disappointing. However Helix 5 is a keeper, it finds and displays ALL fish and even my lure. Very pleased with its chart plotting capabilities, the flexibility of the software, and the quality of the device as well. I wish it included charts for my country, Turkiye, however!
Not the most intuitive interface, but good once configured for your liking. Hummingbird support helped me get it going with the VX lake master card with smart strike. Definitely worth the price for how it unlocks contours and hot spots.
