I've had the UB 2 for a little over a year and have used it in Oregon for simple one or two-night outings, but I just returned from a five-night backpacking trip in the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area in Wyoming and used it for that trip. The tent is fantastic. A few things to note - one night at 10,350 feet, we had a big wind storm. The tent did great, although the fabric was loud. I was using my Leki poles on it, and everything held up OK, though there were gusts where I wasn't sure it would! The other important aspect of the tent is staking it down well. I use the stakes from HMG, and they are very strong. I kept wondering how this tent would work if I were in an area where staking wasn't really an option, and I'm not totally sure how it would be set up well (rocks ... MoreI've had the UB 2 for a little over a year and have used it in Oregon for simple one or two-night outings, but I just returned from a five-night backpacking trip in the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area in Wyoming and used it for that trip. But staking it down is key.I love the guy wires and how they work—there are no more double-half hitch knots for tensioning the ropes. Also, it took me a bit to realize that the zippers on the outer ten flaps could be opened from the top to provide more ventilation, but they work great.Overall, it is a great tent in my experience so far.

This was the tent I was looking for. Ultralight, one piece set up and with zippers. Zipper weight is arbitrary when it comes to tents to me, the ability to quickly lock in and have a quieter tent is worth any weight penalty. So far durability seems great, I have only set up 3 times but slept in for 18 days at base camp.A few minor issues… There was condensation on 3 or 4 of the days with proper set up, but not terrible. On a very rainy day with big drops I felt mist on my face as they hit the tent… I think it was condensation being bounced off the ceiling of the tent from the rain drops, doubtful it was coming through… but maybe. Last one, that doesn’t bother me but some don’t care for, it’s a really bright tent in the morning, you will need a mask or you’ll be ... MoreThis was the tent I was looking for. I use it by myself and store my pack next to me, vestibule is decent size as well if needed to store with two people.

I have only one night in the tent so far. So this is just a first impression. It is a improvement over my Zpack Duplex. The issues with the Duplex have been fixed with the Unbound. Zippered doors will improve the performance in bad weather. Zippered bug net doors is a improvement. Net will no longer lay on the ground. Having the ability to peg down the corners of the bathtub floor will help prevent your pad slipping out of the tent letting in water when it rains. Time will tell how it holds up to Trail life.

And the Unbound 2P is King! Words can’t describe how versatile and functional this tent is. I was in a torrential rainstorm 6k elevation in the smokies for back to back nights and this tent won both nights. The 2nd night water was pooling underneath the tent the tent floor had no leaks and was like a water bed. I now will only use the unbound on my solos and 1 person nights. Forever and unbound 2p and hyperlite customer.
I love the ultralight two person tent! I camped in it for three nights to test it earlier this summer. I’m planning to take it with me to the boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota next summer on a six day excursion. I am systematically acquiring and testing lightweight gear, so that portage and hiking is a little bit easier on my aging body. I love it and plan on adding to my gear more of the products made from the Dima and other lightweight materials.
Lots of nights in this tent! Not enough space for two wide pads. Not enough space for two people and a dog. When using a neo air pad style sleeping pad, both my feet and head hit the tent walls. Kind of a short tent. I’m only 5’9”. Good headroom. Good weather protection. Does ok in the wind if you tie off your guy lines. Both external zippers stopped functioning after the 2nd year. Ultra light zippers don’t last very long, even with care. Used the carbon poles with the tent and now there is a hole in the upper sleeve. Had to tape it. Now I just use the hiking poles. Larger surface area of the handle puts less stress on the fabric.Great tent for one and a dog!
After trying out a cheaper trekking pole style tent (3f gear lanshan 2) for a few years, I was ready to upgrade to a lighter dyneema fabric option. After some research, I decided to buy this unbound over the duplex. When unpacking and setting up the first time, the guy lines were not connected properly to the main doors. Fortunately, I was familiar w/ my lan shan and figured it out. When it was set it up in my backyard for a few days, it performed well with on and off rain, and strong winds. When i slept in it, the interior condensation seemed to run into the netting at the end and wick away. I wish the vents had a small tab w/velcro to keep them more open for better air flow. When unzipping the rainfly door, the vestibule that is still attached is not as taught. ... MoreAfter trying out a cheaper trekking pole style tent (3f gear lanshan 2) for a few years, I was ready to upgrade to a lighter dyneema fabric option. When i slept in it, the interior condensation seemed to run into the netting at the end and wick away. I wish the vents had a small tab w/velcro to keep them more open for better air flow. When unzipping the rainfly door, the vestibule that is still attached is not as taught. If you tighten it and then try to close the zipper, it puts undue stress on the zipper itself, which could lead to failure...so, i just left the last few inches unzipped. More of a challenge when inside the tent closing it. If outside, easier to adjust. The lanshan clips at this location were actually far better. When my tent arrived a little over a month ago, I noticed the mesh pockets were not the same as shown in the pictures on this website. Instead of being located in the corners, it has rectangular shaped mesh pouches attached to the bathtub floor centered by the doors. I assume it may be a slight design modification improvement?I look forward to taking this out into the Sierra mountains this summer!
Excellent design and Hyperlite quality construction. This tent replaced my HMG Dirigo 2. Although the Dirigo was a cutting edge design I find the Unbound is roomier, lighter and more packable. The original tent I received had a factory flaw on 2 side tie outs. I contacted HMG & they immediately arranged for return and replacement. The customer service and communications was excellent. Hyperlite gear has been my trusted backpacking equipment for years and this new tent is no exception. Great quality, durability and design. Thank you.
Surprisingly spacious tent give it small packing size and weight - quite a lot of comments from other hikers on this aspect. Everything about the tent was designed for purpose and its quite simple to setup and pack-up even if you're alone. Only issue I ran into were the internal moisture droplets in the morning - when packing up quickly there's no opportunity for it to dry. Would be helpful for more how-to's and FAQs on the products given the price to avoid these situations.
I’ve had this unbound tent since starting on the PCT in April, and my zippers started failing after about 30 nights. I tried cleaning them with zipper cleaner and being extra careful, to no avail. I have one side of my tent that I can’t shut completely without spending 10 minutes jiggling both zippers up and down, yet the teeth continue to split open, I essentially came down to putting duct tape at night before I go to bed to keep the door shut. Very disappointing for this expensive piece of equipment on a Long Trail. Seems like it should be made more durable because it is the kind of tent people are going to buy to have a lighter pack not worth it, just get a duplex with clips. The zippers suck. I’m very annoyed.
