Adding 7.1 muffles those audio special effects from your game. The reason I'm giving it a 4/5 is because the audio quality is still overall pretty good.

Best No-Fuss Wired Headset For PS4

If I could sum up the HyperX Revolver S in one sentence it would be that it’s the most balanced wired headset overall when you consider sound quality, ease of use, and comfort, but it’s not the best in each category. While the Revolver headset is not the absolute best for audio quality and surround sound, at this price point it’s good enough. Sure the Sony Gold’s are cheaper and they have spatial sound, but the Revolver’s 50mm drivers make a big difference in the quality of sound. Footsteps sound “bigger” and you hear more details in the sound. Volume is average out if the box. I maxed out the volume on the in-line control pod and it was loud enough but not deafeningly loud so for people who like to blast their audio this may be a problem. As for the mic, it’s average. Friends have told me that I don’t sound as clear as I do when I’m using the Astro A40’s but it’s not a major difference. When I first got the headset I plugged it in mid-game and my friends immediately asked why I sound different and further from the mic. They had no issues hearing me, it was just enough of a difference that they noticed it right away.In terms of comfort, the memory foam ear pads combined with the auto-adjusting headband really make the headset just disappear on your head. While this is absolutely a good thing, the issue is that it can feel loose like it’s drooping on your head with no way to “tighten” it. The headband on the revolver S is not something you can adjust manually. There’s no way to shorten/lengthen the height of the earcups or the length of the headband. It just sort of sits on your head with a self-adjusting elastic piece on both sides. Again, although I’m mentioning these things, they aren’t bad enough where it’s a deal breaker.Overall I think the Revolver is a keeper. I’ve tried so many different headsets and unfortunately there is no absolute perfect headset. For example, the Arctis Pro has amazing sound that blows the competition out of the water, but the headset is tight and hurts my head after an hour of use. The Sony Golds are a great price with good sound and adjustable fit, but the headset controls are still confusing even after a year of owning it. The HyperX Revolver S is the only headset I’ve ever tried that manages to give you a good experience all-around while being extremely easy to use. If your budget is $150 or less then look no further.

Good sound but not the most comfortable
9 August 2019

I mainly purchased this headset to use with my PS4, because it was supposed to have good sound when plugged into the controller. I will say, it does sound impressive when used in that way, especially when comparing it to the HyperX Cloud II, which I have also used for this purpose. You can use them through the USB sound card, but the 7.1 setting doesn't work well for that.I recommend these if you have a larger head size. I do not recommend them if you have a smaller or even medium size noggin. The spring mechanism that is supposed to adjust the size of the headband is way to loose, and the headset ends up being large fit no matter what. I like the sound enough that I fit a piece of padding between the steel and the headband piece, but not everyone will want to take the time or effort to do that. They're also very heavy for headphones (in my opinion). My brother, who has a larger head than me, absolutely loves them.I have also used the Cloud Revolvers on my PC. At first, the sound card's 7.1 audio setting did not seem to work right, and everything sounded as if it was coming through a tunnel. I finally figured out that I had to go into control panel on Windows and set it to 7.1 Audio instead of Stereo. It would have been extremely helpful if HyperX made this clear from the start, but eventually I got the sound card to work properly. It was just a hassle.Overall good sound on PS4 through the controller. Sounds good on computer after annoying set up. Comfortable if your head is the right size and shape, but too big for smaller heads.

Great headset...only if you're on PC and PS4

This set was my first true gaming headset after coming from an old $30 Turtle Beach. I bought thinking that it would work perfectly with my Xbox One, but I should've done my research first. It does connect to the Xbox controller via stereo 3.5mm jack, and I'm sure it'll connect to a Switch the same way. However, there are no controls on the line nor on the headphones which was the big let down. For Xbox, all audio controls and chat/game mixing (including muting) happens through the Xbox settings. No quick way of doing it. You'll have to access the settings to do any kind of changes. Can get pretty annoying while playing games and you have to mute the mic really quick. A PC or PS4 which enables usb audio connections can make use of the sound card in the dongle and actually enable this feature. The usb dongle also has the missing audio controls like volume and mute. The positive about this headset is the sound! It absolutely sound incredible in game. Once I had the mixing right through Xbox and COD, lows sounded great. Mids and highs were clear as well. If you have a PC or PS4 I bet this headset will be amazing. If you have an Xbox, look for the Cloudx Flight, which is what I exchanged this with and never looked back since.

Not the right fit for me
2 April 2018

I got these and returned them within an hour. They sounded pretty good but not for the price, it could have been user error but the Dolby 7.1 sounded terrible to me. Overall the sound quality was mediocre for such a well known brand. The lows were fantastic and the mids were pretty good too but the highs were way to ringy for me. Everything seem to have a hollow tone and very tinny sound. The plug and play ability of the headset was nice I had no issue with drivers or anything. The design over all is aesthetically nice but the weight was one of the first things that made me think they would not be the right headset for me. I put the headset on and noticed real quick that the floating headband design, though lessened the feel of the weight, left the headset feeling very loose. The design does not allow for much adjustment and although you can position them just right on your head any rapid movement will knock them around forcing you to readjust. The ear pads themselves were very comfortable but a little too shallow for me and the convex speaker grill under the ear pad cloth rubbed against my ears, again the looseness ultimately is to blame for that.Keep in mind that these are gripes specific to me and my personal preference, I think what I was most disappointed about was the lack of demo for these at any Best Buy. I returned these for the Cloud II, which did have an in store demo display.

This makes talking to friends online as well as playing, unbearable, due to the fact that they sound like theyre talking to you from one end of a concert hall. The self-adjusting headband is too weak to be able to hold itself on your head in a comfortable spot, over time the ear cups are just sitting on your ear, also your ears get super hot wearing the headset for long periods of time.Overall, super unsatisfied with everything I've experienced. Super disappointing.

Reliable, next level gaming, must have
21 March 2022

Looking to get the most from your next generation gaming console, look no further. I've researched, tested, compared similiar headsets with microphones in several price catagories before I came across this pair. This set stands out compared to the competition. Reliable clear with an outstanding sound quality that thunders should you like bass heavy gaming. Try out others before you decide on this set or buy it from the start the choice is yours. But make no mistake if you are serious about gaming quality, trust, this will be the headset you will end up with. Next level sound quality to match next level gaming. But what if you have a gaming pc? They got you covered with a pc adapter that delivers same advanced sound to go with your top of the line sound card. Must have!

Unbelievably comfortable, but the features leave much to be desired

I got this refurbished/recertified headset for about $100, mostly because I had heard great things about the Cloud II from the same company. The refurbished item did not come with a manual, but everything was easy to understand and set up anyway. Both the ear cups and headband are absurdly comfortable, and I have had no issues with them wearing out like my previous Corsair HS60s. The detachable microphone is nice, and the aesthetic isn’t too aggressive for public use. Unfortunately, there are several downsides to this headset. The USB dongle has an insanely long cord, presumably to make up for the ridiculously short cable on the headset itself. I found myself getting tangled in it, and it getting caught on my chair fairly often. The Dolby digital surround is nothing special, and it degrades music quality too much for me to use it. There is no software for customizing EQ settings, only three preloaded settings on the dongle. The only one I found any use for is the first “bass boost” setting, which is alright for music. I would have much preferred some sort of software provided by the manufacturer for tuning to my personal liking. Finally, my unit occasionally has a distinct, static interference when plugged directly into a headphone jack rather than the USB dongle. This may be an issue with mine in particular, but it is still disappointing when trying to listen to music on my phone. Overall, it’s a nice looking, feeling, and (generally) sounding pair of cans, but I would look at other options.

i think the headset is overpriced for the following reasons. it doesnt sit comfortably, im a bigger guy and my ears feel cramped inside, i dislike that i cant manually adjust the headset i find it sliding backwards on my head so i need to place the headband at the top of my head frequently. the 7.1 virtual surround isnt worth the price tag, the sound card isnt particularly great quality. i had better audio quality and spatial awareness by using the headset with the 3.5mm plug alongside dolby atmos for headphones/DTX sound unbound you need to use the windows volume mixer to adjust the volume if you arent using the control box/sound card USB dongle. this wouldnt be that big of an issue if it didnt remember the settings you had set using the usb dongle while switching ... Morei think the headset is overpriced for the following reasons. it doesnt sit comfortably, im a bigger guy and my ears feel cramped inside, i dislike that i cant manually adjust the headset i find it sliding backwards on my head so i need to place the headband at the top of my head frequently. the 7.1 virtual surround isnt worth the price tag, the sound card isnt particularly great quality. i had better audio quality and spatial awareness by using the headset with the 3.5mm plug alongside dolby atmos for headphones/DTX sound unbound you need to use the windows volume mixer to adjust the volume if you arent using the control box/sound card USB dongle. this wouldnt be that big of an issue if it didnt remember the settings you had set using the usb dongle while switching over to the 3.5mm plug which means if you had the volume dial turned up all the way with the dongle and then switch to the 3.5mm it effectively triples the volume. i found that the sweet spot for me is about 20-25 on the windows volume mixer after switching to 3.5mm and it's still quite loud it has decent features. it feels durable audio quality overall isnt bad once i switched to 3.5mm and the detachable mix is a good feature though i find there's no comfortable spot for the mic while wearing it, it gets bumped around a lot especially while drinking i think part of the issue is that it has built in mic sound filter which forces me to keep it fairly close to my face while in a call with friends and again this leads to me awkwardly angling drinks around it while playing a game when i want to quickly drink some water or whatever while in a game and dont have time to readjust the mic
