While it was released in 2020, it's still a great processor for productivity and gaming! My father's computer was feeling a bit dated with it's older i3 7100 cpu with it's 2 core/4 threads and I had an extra Z490 motherboard so I bought this processor for his computer upgrade. It makes a big difference to go from 2 cores up to 6 cores (4 threads up to 12 threads) and he is pleased with the "zippyness" of his new computer. If you are looking for a solid price to performance, i5's are a great option!

I am using this processor as part of my mini-ITX UNRAID server. I have mated this chip with the MSI Z490i Unify ITX motherboard. My main reason for choosing this chip was the iGPU, which after some tweaking of the OS, works really well for Plex transcoding. I realize that I could have stayed with an 8th or 9th gen Intel CPU, but I also wanted hyperthreading support for potential virtual machines. This chip has satisfied all my requirements...and has been pleasantly power efficient to boot. With three idle HDD's and a SDD, my system idles around 32-35w (two fans also running). When things are running at load, around 65w. Absolutely peak, like during boot-up...85w. These are all about 20% lower on average than my previous R5 3600 system. I don't usually play current-year "AAA" games. I play The Division 2, Modern Warfare on occasion, Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017), stuff like that. When CPU-bound, this CPU can play all those games smoothly at 100+ fps. MW does bounce between 80-100fps, but that's more of the exception. I use a Dark Rock Slim 180w tower cooler for this CPU, and while gaming the temps stay at 58C and lower. Power draw is about 63W under load and as low as 3W while idling...so intel has done an excellent job at min/maxing the power draw. As far as the turbo boosting goes, I run this on a dirt-cheap B460M motherboard with no heatsinks on the VRM, and it has no trouble boosting to 4,293mhz while gaming. Even at that, the cheapo VRM only gets up to 56C with this CPU. Can't say enough ... MoreI don't usually play current-year "AAA" games. This was the cheaper option between this and the Ryzen 3600 when I was shopping. I'd say if this is cheaper, 100% get this. The only thing I can think to complain about is that my 3200mhz RAM kit will only run at 2666mhz. It should be able to run at 2933 with this CPU and mobo combo. (I didn't buy the ram for this build, it was just leftover from another project, so I through it in here and saved myself buying new ram)
This processor is considerably faster than the one it replaced, but the most important part of the transaction was the price. It came in nearly $50 less than that familiar online vendor and the store is just a five-minute drive from where I sit. It took more time to uninstall the old processor and replace it with this new one than it did to go get it at the store. Both performance and price were nice enhancements. Get a better processor and your computer experiences are enhanced. Check out the prices at Best Buy before you make a purchase.
Unfortunately I also ordered an Asus Prime B460-Plus Motherboard which is defective. I have never seen this problem before in 30 years of building my own machines - The machine will not power up, not even make it to POST if a DVD drive is attached. I am a retired Engineer so I now a bit about this stuff.. One last attempt is a new power supply due to arrive tomorrow. I also purchased a Cooler Master Case, Model N400 which is the best cases I have ever seen in 30 years and reasonably priced.Regardless of the motherboard this is a great CPU and look forward to resolving this. The motherboard problem is a real pain to have to remove and reinstall as all Mobo changes are but this is no fault of BHPhoto. I have used BHPhoto for 30 years and spent several thousands (also buying Audio Equipment) with them and always had great service with prices as good as anyone. But to summarize facts relevant to the CPU, its very cool running (with a stock cooler) only drawing 65 W and has 6 cores. This would have been a great build if not for the flaky mobo. I will be very happy when I get past that problem.
this CPU is pretty solid for what I use it for, I have not seen any bottlenecking from this. at the time of purchase it was just a good value CPU. If you have a bit more money the 10700k is the optimal choice, as at the time it was the best performing to price ratio I could see at the time. but that cpu would be more relevant for a computer doing heavy processing work, as the 10400 is suitable for general use and gaming.I chose this CPU over AMD's solution at the time due to their terrible availability and overpricing of current and previous gen's models. Once their CPU inventory and prices are more stable, their series may be the better choice.onto the 10400, i am able to play games like dead by daylight, stream, and websurf without issue. the cpu is not ... Morethis CPU is pretty solid for what I use it for, I have not seen any bottlenecking from this. at the time of purchase it was just a good value CPU. So great product, but i have a few issues that can be solved with more money. 1. You cannot oc it. I am very into pcs now and lemme tell u, the highest single core performance is 4.3ghz at intels already bad (compared to AMD's) IPC. As soon as you add another core to the mix it drops down to 4ghz. Ouch. That is after i spent forever in uefi and tweaking settings. Ik about the K versions, but the 10400 doesnt even have one. You need to step down to an i3 i think or go with the 10600k, which is another 80 bucks. Thats 1.5x this price. 2. Upgradability. If you are building your new system right now, buyer beware that 12th gen is coming out, completely wrecking all upgradability. The highest you will get is an i9-11900k, and by the time it is already affordable there ... MoreSo great product, but i have a few issues that can be solved with more money. 1. You cannot oc it. The highest you will get is an i9-11900k, and by the time it is already affordable there will be a new, IDK 20th gen out by then with efficiency levels way over that. 3.Actual power usage. If you unlock all power limits and crank the cpu(85 watts) and onboard GPU (15 watts) you get 100w power usage, which is, according to my bad mental math, 160% of what intel rates it for, 65 watts. Now time for the good parts. 1. I am using a hyper 212 evo with 2 3rd party case fans (kingwin 5$ special, nothing special) and i hit a max of 55°c in my 27°c room. I didnt even try the stock cooler, cuz that would be a bloodbath. 2. High performance, too high. I cannot find a gpu that wouldnt bottleneck this cpu at 1080p at the price of this cpu, let alone 2x.
See a definite speed improvement on my Dell 3880 desktop which had an Intel i3 processor. Took a few minutes to install, applied some thermal paste and re-hooked up the original CPU fan (the Intel one included with the i5 wouldn't work on my motherboard) and it started right up with no problems. Delivery was faster than expected at time of purchase. A bit cheaper at other online retailers, but I wanted the option to go to my local Best Buy store if I ran into any problems.
