Better than 8700k

It only "asked for" 1.34vcore and kept the temps on the same level as his 8700k, under a 240mm AIO. For a soldered CPU that was expected, while lower voltages were a bonus.Tech reviews put 9700k slightly above the 8700k in terms of benchmarks, and one doesn't need to delid the 9700k. It also required a lesser voltage. And most importantly Microcenter's prices are unbeatable now, with online taxes collected. This was a win all around.Thank you Microcenter!

Geek squad employee broken my sons computer

I spent over $400 for an upgrade on 5 month old gaming computer and when geek squad gets done with it, I get back a broken gaming computer. I am very disappointed and upset. I brought my sons computer into the villages Geek Squad at Best Buy to have the processor upgraded. When purchasing the first processor, which was an i7 10th gen processor bought in store, i was advised that they needed to check with a tech to make sure the motherboard would support it. They came back and advised me that the mother board would support it. I Dropped the computer off on scheduled date and was told when I picked it up that now the motherboard would not support the processor and I needed a i7 9th gen. When advising them of what I was told the day before, the just said that was incorrect and they didn’t know who said it. Ok, no biggie, ordered a new one and scheduled another date to drop the computer off. After leaving it for a day, I go to pick it up and see the lady had a part of the computer separate. I was then advised that the computer had a yellow screen when they turned it on, after the new processor placed. and that the graphics card is bad and needs to be replaced. I am furious. My son was on that computer until the day it was dropped off and it was working fine. Now I pick it up after wanting just the i3 processor upgraded to an i7 processor, for the reason of my son wanting to play games that an i3 processor did not support and caused the computer to freeze. I was told that they could not prove the computer worked before I got there and there was nothing they could do but sell me a new graphics card (approx.$300) Why would I bring a broken computer in to have an upgrade? If the graphics card was bad and screen was yellow, I would have brought it in for that. I do plan to contact corporate about this situation.

Lightning fast, deals with high load (4K) gaming very well - gets hot

Bought this for building my first PC. Compared to the i9-9900K this is the obvious choice. Yes, in 9900K has hyperthreading, but I've watched through countless benchmark tests, and there is simply not enough of a performance jump to justify the extra cost (in fact, the 9700K is actually better some games). One word of warning though, if purchasing this CPU, make sure to get a pretty high end air cooler, or better yet, a AIO liquid cooler (I'm using an NZXT Kraken x62, could also use the Corsair AIO). Inititally I bought a budget cooler and the 9700K simply gets way too hot for it to handle. Also recommend pairing it with a higher end z390 motherboard, as this will likely improve the performance over the entry level z390's, which will struggle to keep cool with this ... MoreBought this for building my first PC. Can also OC this CPU if desired and your cooling is capable of handling it.

Not quite the best

This chip was a good chip then, and it still is a very acceptable chip.I can go on forever about the performance you get from this thing. I bought this about ~1.5 years ago and it has NEVER failed me (every time it did fail, it was pretty much my fault.) I was very satisfied about my purchase then. This chip is not as valuable now as it was then, but if you are a type of person that does want a computer that just runs pretty much everything, this is probably enough for your needs. 8 threads and 8 cores are PLENTY enough for most modern processes. The clock speed is enough to get a lot of modern chips a run for its money. With this, you should be able to get any modern video card (probably up to the 3070 or 3070 TI) and not have to worry about GPU bottlenecks ... MoreThis chip was a good chip then, and it still is a very acceptable chip.I can go on forever about the performance you get from this thing. In my opinion, no. Do I recommend this chip now? No. I would absolutely recommend a 12th gen processor ("budget" pc gamers should go for the i5 12600k. Very good price to performance) paired with a 600 series D4 (DDR4) board (or depending on when you are looking at this, go for DDR5). This option is way cheaper and significantly faster. The i7 9700k is a VERY capable chip and shouldn't be looked down upon as a terrible chip. It's more of the fact that it was released at a less than convienent time.Final conclusion? If you have a system already with this chip (i7 9700k or i7 8700k), you should not have to upgrade to AMD or Alder Lake for a pretty long time, probably not until 14th or 15th gen Intel. If you are building, considering building, or buying a new rig, go for an Alder Lake processor. It is very clear Alder Lake is significantly more capable (and cheaper at 250 dollars compared to the 300-400 dollars for this). You should stay clear of this chip in this case.

Although this processor sits at a somewhat odd placement in the product line between the more popular i7 8700k that has 6 cores / 12 threads with Hyperthreading and the i9 9900k with 8 cores / 16 threads with Hyperthreading, this processor with its 8 cores and 8 true threads (no Hyperthreading) has been a perfect fit for my needs. The i7 8700k is reviewed as stellar for gaming but I could not find one in stock during the week that I wanted to spend some time on a new build. The i9 9900k was attractive but I didnt feel like it was the best bang for the buck considering my usage being split between gaming and some development / productivity. The i9 9900k was attractive but I didnt feel like it was the best bang for the buck considering my usage being split between gaming and some development / productivity. I wanted to push more money towards the GPU.I did research and found that overall, the i7 9700k with 8 true threads can be utilized more efficiently in some games and in a lot of productivity software over Hyperthreading. At a negligible $30 increase over the 8700k and delivery with a couple of days instead of being 7-10 days out, I chose the 9700k.Combined with the ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero mobo, I let the automatic OC take over while finishing my configuration. The processor was instantly stable at 4.7 GHz. Within a few days of software installs and basic setup, I manually input values to take the 9700k to 5GHz with no problems at all. I havent had time to push it really hard beyond a few gaming sessions with an FPS and an RPG but temps are remaining in the 50s c with a Corsair H150i in a Corsair 500D case. Seems to be a good combination but I do need to do more stress testing. So far, its been an excellent purchase regarding price to performance ratio.

Sold me a used gpu even though I payed for brand new
26 November 2022

Bought brand new and it arrived with the tape still on the box, took out my old cpu and tried putting in the new cpu and when I looked at the sides I noticed thermal paste still smeared on the sides, mind you no cpu has pre-applied thermal paste on them whatsoever besides the cooler which intel used to couple with the factory coolers, mine did not come with a cooler. Thankfully it at least works as intended but I payed full price for the illusion of a new i7-9700k . One star because at least my new cpu arrived in a timely manner. 0/10

THE SPEED!
23 March 2020

I was getting by with a budget rig equipped with the fx 8350. The processor isn't bad by any means and with the prospect of multi core processing becoming more apparent, the 8350 will still have value. Unfortunately for me I wanted actual speed and quality frames in the games I play, the FX was really starting to show its age in certain games. Some games like Escape from Tarkov (albeit being a poorly optimized game) ran terribly at around 30 fps, sometimes lower. This is when I decided to upgrade to a quality processor for years to come in the form of the 9700k. This processor is FAST, eating up anything i throw at it. I haven't even overclocked it yet since i have no need to at the moment. I haven't even overclocked it yet since i have no need to at the moment. Comparing the games I played on the fx 8350, I can see a double or TRIPLE increase in frames alone. The stutters that the FX 8350 was known for are gone (expect for Tarkov, again poorly optimized game), giving a smooth and fluid experience. Its crazy even the boot times are smooth and I don't even have a ssd yet. Power consumption is nice as well. I'm running a evga bronze 650W PSU with a 1070 and a HDD. Some say you can run the 9700k on less wattage but i like being safer over sorry. Overall great buy on this CPU, especially with the price drop to match the Ryzen processors more competitively. Something that I was back and forth about between this proccessor and the Ryzen 3700x was performance on games mainly. I'll help to clear it up for others as well. So if you like just overall pc performance like editing and streaming, overall content creation and such. You should go for the Ryzen's. But, if quality performance in games is your thing (10-20 frames above Ryzen in most cases) then you cant go wrong with the 9700k. Honestly even content creation is great, just the ryzen's are faster. Intel is still the gaming king boys and girls. Hopefully the competition will make them go even further in the future with SPEED.

The best value CPU for gaming today.
30 November 2020

This processor is a fantastic deal for the price. Intel CPUs and "value" have not exactly been words you see together, but since Intel is leaving the LGA1151 socket behind we get the benefit of some amazing deals on "last-gen" hardware. But forget the fact this is a "last gen" chip - it's still a workhorse. Even in a CPU-killing game like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 the 9700K shines. Performance on this chip, even without overclocking, is comparable to a much more expensive chip on a "current gen" platform for a fraction of the price. And if you're into overclocking, this chip can easily be pushed into even higher performance levels. Most games are limited by the GPU rather than the CPU, and with 8 high-speed cores the 9700K is still going to provide long-term ... MoreThis processor is a fantastic deal for the price. And you're still coming in at a price that is much, much less than CPUs with lesser or only marginally better performance. The 9700K is not the sexiest chip on the marketplace, but it currently the best value you are going to find. At Microcenter's current insanely good pricing this is a value you should snap up before they are gone.
