A thumping football sized speaker!

To my ears I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary in regards to connectivity or the quality of the sound. I have a fairly robust Wi-Fi network / access points (work in IT) so I don't imagine I would have issues using WiFi as the primary connection - but you may want to be mindful of that in your situation.Clarity was apparent from the moment our music started playing - no hissy poor sounding audio - and funny enough I happened to go to move the speaker (which I would say is exactly like grabbing a football - the rubberized grip on the bottom is a nice touch and works well to grab in the hand and also plant the speaker on a surface) when the song changed and I put my hand a bit close to the right end and the bass thumped enough to slap my hand with the woofer which I didn't notice was setup the way it is.After that I spent a good 5 minutes just enjoying watching the woofers bounce around on the ends of the speaker :)A nice extra is the ability to charge another device off the back of the speaker - phone batteries can go quick these days and you aren't always around an outlet to charge from. We gave it a quick test but didn't keep our phone hooked up very long. For our uses the 20 hour playing time is well beyond what we'd need and we're pretty particular about keeping devices charged so its nice to not have to worry about running out of juice when we take the speaker with us (we go to a lot of car shows, etc and it's nice to have a portable speaker). We haven't touched the equalizer settings in the app just yet since the audio sounds great to us (to be fair we aren't extreme audiophiles) - but at quick glance it seemed to be easy to do and I am confident I could tweak settings to fit different genres of music (I tend to listen to metal and my GF listens to rock / pop, etc.).Really nothing negative to say about this speaker - sound quality is typical goodness JBL provides, I am able to pick up the speaker with my smaller hands and it's comfortable to move around - doesn't budge despite having pretty good woofers on both ends. If I happen to drop it in the pool it'll survive - and if a sandstorm hits I don't have to worry about that either. All good in my book! For the price and features I don't think you can go wrong.

Bought this as an upgrade to a much older and smaller Sony unit.Recently took it on a 4 day camping trip and it was on most of the time, yet I only charged it twice! The sound travels far and doesn't distort at higher volumes while remaining clear enough when you've got it down low.Easy to connect out of the box and comes with a good quality USB C to A cable. The cable doubles to charge the unit and utilise the reverse charging for your devices which can be really handy when on the go.Build quality is extremely solid with protective hard rubbery ends and a reasonably flat bottom to ensure it stays in place.I bought the pink version as I've always had black speakers. The only downside is it did get a bit dirty while out camping, but hey, it's a portable ... MoreBought this as an upgrade to a much older and smaller Sony unit.Recently took it on a 4 day camping trip and it was on most of the time, yet I only charged it twice! I have yet to find anything that sounds as good for this size. The Motion Boom was great but didn't sound as full/open as the Charge. Plus the Charge 5 sounded much better at low volumes. The bang for your buck with this thing is incredible. I ordered this before reading all the negative reviews, and after having run into a few issues myself after only about a week and a half of having the speaker NOT USING the speaker I have finally decided to come and look at the other reviews. Firstly, I have only turned it on and used it twice for about 30min to 2 hours. A few days ago I was driving in the car with it since my car radio is broken, and it turned off all of a sudden it disconnected out of nowhere. I tried turning it back on and it would connect to my phone and play music for about 15 seconds and shut back off and disconnect. I called JBL customer support and they told me that I should try resetting the speaker as well as resetting my phone and making sure I have updated everything on my phone ... MoreI ordered this before reading all the negative reviews, and after having run into a few issues myself after only about a week and a half of having the speaker NOT USING the speaker I have finally decided to come and look at the other reviews. I did both of those things, and nothing worked. I also understand that you should be able to play music while charging the JBL charge 5 speaker, but I am not able to do this. when I first received it, I did not attempt to do this, so I'm not sure if it has been this way since day one or not but it is definitely faulty or fake so I need a new one and I need to return the one that I have. I would like to add that my speaker does not look or feel fake and neither did the box or cords or instructions that came with which I understand some people didn't receive at all. I had high hopes, and I am disappointed in Walmart for allowing sellers like this to continuously scam people.DONT BUY FROM THIS SELLER.

I have owned 2 JBL charge 5s for about 7 months now, I paid on average $140 for each. I am a 17 year old male living in Michigan (demographic). This product is average. The price to audio quality is average, its redeeming factor is the ecosystem that JBL has built, and its durability. Hypothetically, you can link most medium sized newer generation portable speakers to the JBL charge 5. I often find the speakers needing to buffer and sync with each other, which causes the music spaz out or completely stop. The Partyboost experience is the highest quality in small spaces, but still packs a punch in larger spaces. The feature can power businesses like small food vendors and of course, parties. The Partyboost experience is the highest quality in small spaces, but still packs a punch in larger spaces. The feature can power businesses like small food vendors and of course, parties. The JBL charge 5 has a durable design, with consistent waterproofing across both speakers. Small quality control issues with consistent stitching. I have used these two speakers at pool parties, indoor parties, a burrito shop, a coffee shop paired with a JBL pulse 4 (must mention that the Pulse series is a joke), and most often at my computer. I have mainly used the speakers for R&B and Hip Hop, though the speakers have seen several hours of Pop at the coffee shop. All three of these genres work great with the hardware of the JBL charge 5. The bass' power maxes out at around the 50% volume mark, with the mids and treble maxing out at 100% volume. It makes the listening experience fun in small spaces with high quality bass, and in larger spaces the bass does lack a bit. When setting up the speakers, its best to have at least a few walls for the sound to bounce off of. If I could go back and spend the 300 dollars on another set of speakers, I likely wouldn't. The speakers are the perfect size for travel and still sound good since they are expensive. If your friends, family, or coworkers have a recent and medium sized JBL portable, (I believe partyboost starts at the Flip series and larger) then you should go for the JBL Charge 5 (check title).

Great sound and connectivity options for the price

Great punchy sound from a really portable device. I wanted a speaker to use in the garden for music whilst being able to use my phone for other purposes, having both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth gives me that freedom.Battery life is great so far, despite constant use it seems to drain really slowly. I've yet to use it to charge my own phone, so cannot comment on that side of things. The sound quality is really good considering it is mono, its punchy, bassy, clear and detailed. I own other types of speakers and stereo systems and this does well to hold it's own considering the form factor. It offers Google Chromecast abilities, which the others lack and so it seamlessly dropped into my home network.

Horrible idea to personalize
18 December 2023

Awful experience with the personalized speaker. I ordered a design and it came in so faded that it wasn’t noticeable what my design actually was. It was also slightly sticky to the touch… the whole speaker where the print was made, had a weird sticky feeling on it. On top of that, the speaker was dusty with some kind of white, powdery material. Not only was the product horrible and not accurately made to what I wanted and what I paid for, but the JBL company selfishly offered a small refund of $17 knowing that I paid $120 for the speaker AND waited nearly three weeks for it to be delivered. I had to send a lengthy email regarding their own policies about “making things right” just to get my full refund after their mistake. I will never bother personalizing a JBL product again after this experience. At the end of all this, I had to buy the speaker from best buy and that one came very nice and CLEAN in the packaging while also being wrapped in a nice cloth. The personalized speaker that I originally got did not have a cloth to cover/protect it. I found that very odd and it just makes me believe JBL doesn’t care much about the personalized orders that much. Would not recommend anyone to go through this.

Poweful sound, with some connectivity issues.

The Charge 5 will blow you away in terms of powerful sound... if you're willing to put up with odd connectivity issues with anything but bluetooth paring. Whilst this does not have support for hi-res codec options (not even aptX), the implementation of the standard codec is well done, with no noticeable loss in detail at lower to mid volumes. When the volume is pushed higher, you will notice some compression in detail, but that's bluetooth. What interested me was support for services such as Tidal Connect, and WiFi streaming. The app is far more straightforward than Sonos, and encourages you to use the source apps and connect that way, which is great. Chromecast support is pretty spotty however; when tested with PlexAmp tracks would loop, buffer and stop frequently. ... MoreThe Charge 5 will blow you away in terms of powerful sound... if you're willing to put up with odd connectivity issues with anything but bluetooth paring. There is a basic EQ within the app, which is appreciated, although the standard EQ SHOULD be loyal to the Harman curve (since JBL own Harman), but the bass is quite bloated, and needs taming on music such as Rock & Indie. Overall, the form factor is excellent, and delivers good audio with a decent battery life. Well done!

Stunning sound and Deep Bass Whilst Portable

The JBL Charge 5 stands out as a speaker. Its audio quality is impressive delivering highs, smooth mids and deep bass. While the battery life falls short of the promised 20 hours it still provides a 12-15 hours of continuous playtime. Perfect for gatherings or trips out to the beach. Additionally it doubles as a phone charger to save the day when your phone battery gets low. Whats more its dustproof and waterproof design, with an IP67 rating makes it ideal for beach or pool use and great for using in the British weather being caught in a shower like we did and it suffered no ill affects. The Bluetooth connectivity is reliable and easy and the app is brilliant, being able to change the sound style and amount of bass. You can even connect JBL speakers using PartyBoost for a surround sound experience which having tried this with a friends speaker is simply amazing!!However there are some drawbacks to consider... It lacks a built in microphone for calls. Is slightly bulkier compared to models. There's no input option and it comes at a somewhat higher price point. Despite these downsides the Charge 5 remains an high performing speaker that suits individuals seeking durability and excellent sound quality whilst also providing an impressive speaker that is easily portable and exceed most competitors at the same price point.
