Bought this as an upgrade to a much older and smaller Sony unit.Recently took it on a 4 day camping trip and it was on most of the time, yet I only charged it twice! The sound travels far and doesn't distort at higher volumes while remaining clear enough when you've got it down low.Easy to connect out of the box and comes with a good quality USB C to A cable. The cable doubles to charge the unit and utilise the reverse charging for your devices which can be really handy when on the go.Build quality is extremely solid with protective hard rubbery ends and a reasonably flat bottom to ensure it stays in place.I bought the pink version as I've always had black speakers. The only downside is it did get a bit dirty while out camping, but hey, it's a portable ... MoreBought this as an upgrade to a much older and smaller Sony unit.Recently took it on a 4 day camping trip and it was on most of the time, yet I only charged it twice! I have owned 2 JBL charge 5s for about 7 months now, I paid on average $140 for each. I am a 17 year old male living in Michigan (demographic). This product is average. The price to audio quality is average, its redeeming factor is the ecosystem that JBL has built, and its durability. Hypothetically, you can link most medium sized newer generation portable speakers to the JBL charge 5. I often find the speakers needing to buffer and sync with each other, which causes the music spaz out or completely stop. The Partyboost experience is the highest quality in small spaces, but still packs a punch in larger spaces. The feature can power businesses like small food vendors and of course, parties. The JBL charge 5 has a durable design, with consistent waterproofing across both speakers. Small quality control issues with consistent stitching. I have used these two speakers at pool parties, indoor parties, a burrito shop, a coffee shop paired with a JBL pulse 4 (must mention that the Pulse series is a joke), and most often at my computer. I have mainly used the speakers for R&B and Hip Hop, though the speakers have seen several hours of Pop at the coffee shop. All three of these genres work great with the hardware of the JBL charge 5. The bass' power maxes out at around the 50% volume mark, with the mids and treble maxing out at 100% volume. It makes the listening experience fun in small spaces with high quality bass, and in larger spaces the bass does lack a bit. When setting up the speakers, its best to have at least a few walls for the sound to bounce off of. If I could go back and spend the 300 dollars on another set of speakers, I likely wouldn't. The speakers are the perfect size for travel and still sound good since they are expensive. If your friends, family, or coworkers have a recent and medium sized JBL portable, (I believe partyboost starts at the Flip series and larger) then you should go for the JBL Charge 5 (check title).

Great punchy sound from a really portable device. I wanted a speaker to use in the garden for music whilst being able to use my phone for other purposes, having both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth gives me that freedom.Battery life is great so far, despite constant use it seems to drain really slowly. I've yet to use it to charge my own phone, so cannot comment on that side of things. The sound quality is really good considering it is mono, its punchy, bassy, clear and detailed. I own other types of speakers and stereo systems and this does well to hold it's own considering the form factor. Sure, it isn't for critical listening, but as a speaker that has already been to the beach, soaked in the a garden during a waterfight, used on a balcony for relaxing listening, I can ... MoreGreat punchy sound from a really portable device. It offers Google Chromecast abilities, which the others lack and so it seamlessly dropped into my home network.

Bought this to use as a car stereo in my otherwise music-free fleet vehicle at work, as well as for camping.I will say that the sound quality is good. Distortion free, full range from the high notes to the bass. And it can take a beating, as advertised. Didn't get a chance to put the water resistance to the test, but it stood up to a range of high and low temperatures, and heavy winds carrying dust, and even falling off the dashboard a couple times without faltering. However, that's where the legitimacy of its claims end. Even at full volume, I couldn't hear the music if I walked more than 80' from the truck (engine off, no competing noise). Similarly, camping in the middle of nowhere I had it sitting on the hood of my rig and it wasn't loud enough to make out ... MoreBought this to use as a car stereo in my otherwise music-free fleet vehicle at work, as well as for camping.I will say that the sound quality is good. Similarly, camping in the middle of nowhere I had it sitting on the hood of my rig and it wasn't loud enough to make out from the perimeters of camp. And the battery life is abysmal. Far from the advertised "up to 20 hrs." I was lucky if I made it through an 8 hour workday before it quit on me. Never tried to charge my phone from it, because it couldn't even hold a charge itself. I should have listened to my coworkers, who said JBL's quality has gone downhill in recent years. Instead I went with the "known" name. Learned my lesson. Will not buy from JBL again.
Firstly the packaging the speaker came in was beautifully presented. It actually felt like a treat opening this up when we received it.I had a quick scan through the instructions and found that it was very simple to set up, I tried it through the Bluetooth connectivity first and wasn’t disappointed at how easy it was to connect. My husband has since downloaded the JBL app which again was done with no issues. He can control everything from the app from changing the music he listening to to the sound controls. It’s the perfect size for having using in the bathroom/shower, which my children have started doing.Although the speaker might seem relatively small, to use in the garden whilst hanging out with family and friends, the sound is amazing. The Charge 5 will blow you away in terms of powerful sound... if you're willing to put up with odd connectivity issues with anything but bluetooth paring. Whilst this does not have support for hi-res codec options (not even aptX), the implementation of the standard codec is well done, with no noticeable loss in detail at lower to mid volumes. When the volume is pushed higher, you will notice some compression in detail, but that's bluetooth. What interested me was support for services such as Tidal Connect, and WiFi streaming. The app is far more straightforward than Sonos, and encourages you to use the source apps and connect that way, which is great. Chromecast support is pretty spotty however; when tested with PlexAmp tracks would loop, buffer and stop frequently. ... MoreThe Charge 5 will blow you away in terms of powerful sound... if you're willing to put up with odd connectivity issues with anything but bluetooth paring. There is a basic EQ within the app, which is appreciated, although the standard EQ SHOULD be loyal to the Harman curve (since JBL own Harman), but the bass is quite bloated, and needs taming on music such as Rock & Indie. Overall, the form factor is excellent, and delivers good audio with a decent battery life. Well done!
The JBL Charge 5 stands out as a speaker. Its audio quality is impressive delivering highs, smooth mids and deep bass. While the battery life falls short of the promised 20 hours it still provides a 12-15 hours of continuous playtime. Perfect for gatherings or trips out to the beach. Additionally it doubles as a phone charger to save the day when your phone battery gets low. Whats more its dustproof and waterproof design, with an IP67 rating makes it ideal for beach or pool use and great for using in the British weather being caught in a shower like we did and it suffered no ill affects. You can even connect JBL speakers using PartyBoost for a surround sound experience which having tried this with a friends speaker is simply amazing!!However there are some drawbacks to consider... It lacks a built in microphone for calls. Is slightly bulkier compared to models. There's no input option and it comes at a somewhat higher price point. Despite these downsides the Charge 5 remains an high performing speaker that suits individuals seeking durability and excellent sound quality whilst also providing an impressive speaker that is easily portable and exceed most competitors at the same price point.
Before I touch on the speaker itself I have to give props to the JBL folks for once again thinking through their packaging and making it extremely easy to open / work with. It grinds my gears when products are clearly tossed into cumbersome plastic encased tombs you have to butcher just to get to. Unboxing took a minute or so (literally) - wonderful. The speaker itself surprised me right away - we connected over Wi-Fi - which isn't the usual (bluetooth being more common) - just to give it a whirl and found it was easy to do (via the JBL one app). Unboxing took a minute or so (literally) - wonderful. The speaker itself surprised me right away - we connected over Wi-Fi - which isn't the usual (bluetooth being more common) - just to give it a whirl and found it was easy to do (via the JBL one app). To my ears I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary in regards to connectivity or the quality of the sound. I have a fairly robust Wi-Fi network / access points (work in IT) so I don't imagine I would have issues using WiFi as the primary connection - but you may want to be mindful of that in your situation.Clarity was apparent from the moment our music started playing - no hissy poor sounding audio - and funny enough I happened to go to move the speaker (which I would say is exactly like grabbing a football - the rubberized grip on the bottom is a nice touch and works well to grab in the hand and also plant the speaker on a surface) when the song changed and I put my hand a bit close to the right end and the bass thumped enough to slap my hand with the woofer which I didn't notice was setup the way it is.After that I spent a good 5 minutes just enjoying watching the woofers bounce around on the ends of the speaker :)A nice extra is the ability to charge another device off the back of the speaker - phone batteries can go quick these days and you aren't always around an outlet to charge from. We gave it a quick test but didn't keep our phone hooked up very long. For our uses the 20 hour playing time is well beyond what we'd need and we're pretty particular about keeping devices charged so its nice to not have to worry about running out of juice when we take the speaker with us (we go to a lot of car shows, etc and it's nice to have a portable speaker). We haven't touched the equalizer settings in the app just yet since the audio sounds great to us (to be fair we aren't extreme audiophiles) - but at quick glance it seemed to be easy to do and I am confident I could tweak settings to fit different genres of music (I tend to listen to metal and my GF listens to rock / pop, etc.).Really nothing negative to say about this speaker - sound quality is typical goodness JBL provides, I am able to pick up the speaker with my smaller hands and it's comfortable to move around - doesn't budge despite having pretty good woofers on both ends. If I happen to drop it in the pool it'll survive - and if a sandstorm hits I don't have to worry about that either. All good in my book! For the price and features I don't think you can go wrong.
I ordered a 'used like new' model of the JBL Charge 5 Black Portable Bluetooth Speaker for $79 plus tax or whatever else.I am upset at spending that much never mind the $129 for a new one of these brand new.In my opinion, it's a complete rip-off. The equalizer options on the app are garbage but I think that is just the speaker not having the capability to do anything w/ the limited capabilities that it has available to it.I bought two used 1980's hardwood cabinet speakers from a pawn shop for $80 that has 19" woofers plus 5 tweeters that can blow this JBL out of the door.... easily. The quality offered for the ridiculous amount of money that is charged should be criminal. How far backward we have gone in such a short time. It's pathetic and sad how bad the quality is for the price tag attached. These are tinny sounding and if any bass is added to it at a volume level that is audible for someone like me (who has been riding Harleys w/ straight pipes for 30 years as well as shooting without earplugs and going to metal concerts since I was 12 years old) then it gets too muffled and sounds terrible. So the bottom line is that I ended up spending $85 (w/ taxes, etc.) for a 10" long by 3" high speaker that I only listen to when I am in the shower where the tiny bathroom is 8' X 5' and therefore I can leave it at a lower volume and still hear it.I WAS looking at the largest JBL Party Box at one point but I wanted to try this one first as a friend said that I wouldn't need to go that big to hear it at a loud volume. However, that price is ridiculous, and now knowing how terrible the sound quality is offered for the extreme price point, I will NEVER get it and instead will go back to using old-fashioned hardwood cabinet speakers, and I'll just get a modern receiver so I have Bluetooth access. The only good part is that I received my order when they said I would receive it, and it was in 'like new' condition without a doubt. So at least the seller was good.
