Beautiful portrait film with amazing skin tones. The 160 is definitely finer grained and 400 isn't necessary with a still subject and bright flash. So, I'll probably stick with mostly 160 moving forward, but it is still an amazing film. It works great in natural light as well where you may want a faster shutter speed or high f number.

Beautiful skin tones, latitude for days, scans like a charm, great pushability, and extremely fine grain (not that I worry about that in 8x10). This stock is a gift to film shooters. It's way to expensive though! If Kodak Alaris can get the cost back under $$dollars I would shoot a ton more. As it is now, special occasions.

Finest color film there is. Beautiful skin colors, sure. But very nice rendition of foliage as well. Insane dynamic range and very smooth highlight clipping. This is what you get when your digital cam can't handle the heat! I use it in 35mm, 120 and 4x5. But I have to say that the 4x5 real estate and the portra color is real special. On the down side (not a deal breaker), it takes some skill to get accurate colors when you scan it, although that can be said of any negative film, I find that the learning curve for portra (setting up vuescan or silverlight profiles, and then photoshop actions, etc) is a bit more time consuming than with other brands. That's perhaps due to the very wide dynamic range.

Great for portraits but also snowy landscapes since it handles highlights well and is less contrasty than Ektar 100. I don't shoot this as much as I should but whenever I do I am never disappointed. My recommendation is to rate it for ISO 200. You won't notice a difference in the highlights but the shadows will be more neutral.
Superb in every way. A useful ISO rating with subtle grain lending real texture to an image. Ideal for architectural work and landscapes, copes well with time exposures and has excellent exposure tolerance +/- 3 stops still gives a scannable image. 5* recommended.
Wonderful natural colors and fine grain. Sorry, but digital never comes close! Using in large format, grain is never and issue, and who says a little grain is bad anyway? Scans very well. Love, Love, Love IT!!!!!
I've used my portra 400 4x5 sheets for years, and I've never considered moving to a different film. The colors and feel of the film has shaped the look of my photography. The boxes are also incredibly useful as organizing dividers in drawers.
I really prize a film that sees the world as I do, only better. Kodak Portra 400 is such a film. It is not a literal film -- although it is far form inaccurate -- however its strength is rendering colours, especially natural colours, even more lovely than when you saw them. The palette tends towards a slightly pastel rendering that suits most subjects more than you would think. Nevertheless, it is still accurate enough to allow you to achieve a very natural-looking rendering look if that is your goal. Most importantly of all, it does beautiful things to skin. Only Portra 160 exceeds it and not by much. Unlike Portra 160, the reciprocity behaviour of Portra 400 is excellent. I have had no difficulty pressing it into service at night for very long exposures. Just like ... MoreI really prize a film that sees the world as I do, only better. Kodak Portra 400 is such a film. I have had no difficulty pressing it into service at night for very long exposures. Just like the other modern Kodak negatives it is almost impossible to overexpose so when in doubt, just expose longer. The two Kodak Portras are the mainstay of what I shoot these days for almost every kind of shooting. However, when portraits are the order of the day I refuse to shoot them with anything else.
*Let me preface by saying I'm a college student living off minimum wage and my school's work-study program* Yes, this film is expensive and yes, processing, scanning, etc. comes at a cost. No matter what fancy little mirrorless camera comes out, it'll never compare to the depth of field and feel of an 8x10 color negative. Holding this 8x10 negative against a light box is a completely independent and amazing experience. I highly recommend you (at the very least) buy a box and give it a shot.
I have used this film in the past and have been very happy with the results. I build detailed life-sized sets and need to be able to make large prints so a film with with less grain is ideal. I have not used this film since 2020 and it seems to be a bit grainer since I used it last. Great latitude and color though.
