Kreg KDG-6000 Drilling Guide

I had to drill 5” deep pilot holes for some 6” structural screws. There wasn’t much tolerance for the bit to be non-perpendicular to the surface, made somewhat more difficult since I was using 3/16” x 12” bit. The Kreg Drilling Guide worked perfectly. Its size allows it to fit in my pocket. I have no excuse for crooked drilled holes when using twist drill bits of the most common sizes.

This drill guide solves the problem with drilling holes that must be perpendicular to the work piece surface. It's simple, easy to use, accurate, and repeatable. For less than $10.00, you can consistently drill holes that are square to the work piece surface in no time at all. This small item doesn't replace a drill press, but then again, you can't get a drill press for $10.00! Get yourself one, even if you don't feel you really have to have it, because I guarantee you'll use it!

Check to make sure you bits work with the guide!

I was able to use it to keep my holes straight through the boards, but did have unexpected issues with my drill bits. You would think any 3/8 inch drill bit would fit through the 3/8 inch hole right? Nope! The longer bit I purchased specifically for the project wouldn’t pass through the hole on the guide. So be sure to check that everything you need works together with this guide before you head home from the store. Otherwise you will be going back for a different drill bit like I had to. I’m not sure if the drill bit or the guide was the culprit, but know it wouldn’t work right.

Holy Drill Guide

Bought the drill guide because it was on sale.Have used it to drill 1/2" diameter holes in Peruvian Walnut. Holes were absolutely straight. Very well made item that compares to other drill guides on the market. Have purchased alot of Kreg products over the past 18 months and they do not disappoint. You get what you pay for.

It Just Works!

I couldn’t drill straight no matter how hard I tried so buying this was an easy decision to make. My first use was through some very dense wood and I know without this guide, my holes would angle to the point of being useless.If you want to drill straight hole, use this guide. It just works.It’s large enough to effectively guide a drill bit straight and small enough to fit in a drawer, on a pegboard, or in a tool box.

Keeps the drill bit where you want it.

Had to drill a straight hole through a board 6” thick but only 1.5” wide. Had to get it right the first time. Tried first without any aid and result was totally unsatisfactory. Got this device and did another trial run. Excellent result. Used a wood clamp to make sure the device did not move. It didn’t and hole needed came out great.

Not perfect, but very handy!

It it very handy for drilling straight holes without a drill press. However, it would be good if it had a few additional holes in other sizes. You also have to be careful when lining it up with your layout marks. A big improvement would be to make it more angular on the sides (narrower at the top, wider at the bottom) to make it easier to look down and see the marks on each side when lining up the hole.

Quick easy to use

I got this for a quick easy way to drill a stright hole on a edege with out setting up a more complicated jig. It's perfect for 3/4 MDF or any lumber that is exactly sized. The reson for only 4 stars is it does not sit perfect on edge of lumber that is under sized and can shift and not be centered. As for flat serface you can hold it in place or sometimes clamp it so it does not shift. but if the exact location of the hole is not importen this will make quick work of it.

Straight holes! (read for tip)

Definitely helped be drill straight holes. I would reccomend starting the hole without it though to make sure you are right on your mark. It is hard to tell if your bit is perfetly centered when starting the hole with this blocking your vision.

Works if you wood is exactly 1/2 or 3/4 inches thick.

Works well if you have the exactly dimensions in your wood. The underside of the tool has sharp edges for those widths, any other width will have play. They should have either used slanted edges on the bottom to accomodate slightly different widths, or somehow made it with adjustable widths.
