Easy Installation/excellent writing

I purchased this to replace the medium nib that came on my Lammy Safari (which I have been using with a converter for 10 years!). I liked the smoothness of the medium nib but it simply put out too much ink to be practical in many situations. I finally purchased this fine nib and have to say I am very pleased. Same old pen, same smooth writing experience, just a bit finer line and a little less ink.

Edgy but nice

Took me awhile to try this because the M-nib is such a nice, smooth writer. Slightly dry on some paper, but nice. Removal of the M was easy. Installing the 1.1mm stub took more force than I expected. Had to prime the nib before it would write, but that was a one time thing. The next morning it wrote with first nib-to-paper stroke. There is feedback depending on the stroke. Edgy the word? Hence the missing star for rating. However it lays down a nicer, wetter, line than the M-nib and the line variation is just about perfect. I think the wider stub would have been too much. Very pleased. Won't be re-installing the M-nib anytime soon.

Excellent !

Positive in all respects. Website, purchase, fulfillment, shipping, delivery. smilles and sticker a nice touch. Exactly as ordered. Just starting with a fountain pen and ink. Lamy Safari a great place to begin. Now I need to look at stub, italic, and cursive nibs. Lamy Joy. ?

I don't know how this nib works but I love it
26 January 2023

I'm usually the type of guy to look up as much information about a product as possible, even if I know I'm already going to purchase it. This I impulse purchased. As a lefty it was a no-brainer to at least give it a shot. Even now as I use it, I still haven't looked up exactly what they did to make this work for a pen being pushed at all sorts of weird angles across the page. But it doesn't matter, because this thing WORKS. Buttery smooth, clean and even lines. Feels barely any different at all sorts of angles and heights. I may never know what a right-handed person with a well-tuned nib experiences when they write, but I have to assume this is significantly close to it. 10/10 for me.

Inexpensive, inconsistent, but eminently tunable
11 September 2022

In my experience, the tolerances and variances on Lamy's standard form (non Lamy 2000) nibs is high enough that I see a pretty wide range of behaviors from the same nib class. Sometimes the tines come very tight and the nib writes very drily, while other times there is a solid tine gap and the pen writes wet. Sometimes the nibs feel a little over or under polished with varying types of feedback. This might suggest that the nibs aren't worth your time, but on the contrary, Lamy pens are attractive at least in part because of their nibs. While there is some inconsistency here, the standard feed system that Lamy uses means that you can have an extremely wide range of nibs and materials for your pens, all for a very affordable price. While there is some inconsistency here, the standard feed system that Lamy uses means that you can have an extremely wide range of nibs and materials for your pens, all for a very affordable price. I can have various types of steel nibs as well as gold nibs, in a wide range of tipping sizes. Moreover, the shape and structure of the Lamy nibs means that they are very easy to tune, so even if you do get a nib that doesn't quite write the way that you would like, tuning the nib to write the way you want is almost always possible without needing to do any grinding of the nib. I can't say this for some other nibs. I also find that the combination of the Lamy nib and feeds are some of the most consistent and capable around in terms of getting an ink flow that works for you. They don't gush ink and they don't write too dry; the feeds can keep up with either end of the spectrum depending on how you tune the nib. While I wish Lamy would improve and tighten the tolerances of their nibs, what is there right now is a good deal and worth the price of admission, I think.

LAMY steel nib EF, great, but not for everyone
21 February 2023

I recently purchased a LAMY AL-star pen from Goulet with a medium nib. Before placing the order I added an EF nib, just to try it out. The pen with the medium nib is very good, but my writing style is small lettering. When I tried the EF nib it was better for my writing style. Concerns I had about using finer EF nib were unfounded. The ink flow is consistent (using LAMY ink cartridges, I haven't tried other ink. If you like fine writing style get this nib. Obviously, the style is not for everyone. I also really like the Goulet web site, they don't just sell products, they provide a wealth of information for making good decisions in what to buy and how to use the products.

Lamy 1.1 stub (steel)
20 May 2024

It was easy to change the nib and the smoothness and flow with the new nib is just right. Using Pilot blue black, a good flowing but not too wet ink. This is not an extreme italic or stub, but just gives a bit more character and is about half way between an f and m Lamy steel nib. So far it has not been problematic in drying up between uses either. Totally recommend to experiment.

Medium Lamy steel nib - black
16 February 2023

I purchased the Medium nib extra for the safari I also bought that came with a fine as the only option. I easily swapped out the nibs as demonstrated in the videos. First experience writing with it was very scratchy. after closely examining the nib end found it was not lined up with each other and proceeded to align again as shown in videos. Writing greatly improved. I have been using for 3 weeks now and occasionally experience low ink flow but think it may be the way I am holding the pen. This is my first time using a Lamy pen and and my second fountain pen, so I do not know if this is normal for this pen or not. My first fountain pen was a Waterman Allure Fine nib that I found on sale at a local office store which I greatly enjoy still. Review of LAMY Z50 Black Steel Fountain Pen Nibs
6 October 2024

Had a fine nib that was very scratchy and dry straight out of the factory. Have not taken it to a nib tuner yet. Bought the medium nib because I prefer the line thickness. Writes smoothly, no more scratchiness, and no more dryness. Beware black paint scratches rather easily, but I prefer the black steel look.

Worst pen I've ever held in my hand
9 April 2024

So, Lamy got me on a Safari. I cleaned it, worked on the nib, nothing. Everyone in the pen groups can't understand because theirs all work flawless. OK... Maybe I got that one in 1000 defect. So, I decoded to get a new nib and boom.. another piece of trash from Lamy. They got me again, agist my better judgement. Like writing with a fish hook.. again! I know.. fool me twice, shame on me. I got like 50 fountain pens and I've been into them for a long time and never this bad of a problem, not even from the Chinese "homage" pens. I finally had enough and stabbed it into the counter and chucked it in the garbage. I'll never waste my money with Lamy again. That's what I get for slumming it. Don't waste your money on the brand. Go TWSBI.
