I liked the look of the sheath, but the belt loop strap broke within 2 weeks of mild use. The leather on the back is too thin and the stitching was absolute garbage. I had to sew it back on myself because I did not have time to return it with my work schedule. I am pretty let down. The knives are amazing but the health did not reflect the quality of the knife. I am just now seeing this review because I am so busy, but I'm glad I can share this with the company. If the bottom stitching ends up breaking too it will just be trash because I cannot get in there to try and sew it back up. Crossing my fingers it holds true for at least until the fall, but I would not be surprised if it breaks tomorrow. I know that when it does break I will have to go outside of the ... I know that when it does break I will have to go outside of the original brand of Leatherman to find a new sheath, which sucks. I posted pictures so you could see..this was actually the first thing ive ever sewn in my life. was not easy that's for sure, although I did use my leatherman to help grab the needle!

Purchased in May, by December the belt loop had ripped off, the actual leather had torn. Disappointed that a company that puts out quality multi tools would put out something of this quality. Contacted Leatherman and their response “ Thanks for reaching out and sorry for the issue with the sheath. I will pass along the feedback to our design team you provided.” Sounds like they realize that it’s junk and won’t stand behind it.

As I stated in another review, to me, some things need a leather sheath. My Surge is no exception. Now the original sheath was still in great shape (probably because my Dad who I originally bought this for never really used it, I found it in a drawer after he passed away). This will now be a part of my hunting kit in honor of him but the original sheath wasn't doing it for me. I took a chance on this & glad I did. The first thing I did was give it a coat of mink oil, for 2 reasons, 1 to add some protection & 2 to darken the leather a bit. Glad to say that it worked as I had hoped. It's now protected & a little darker than when it arrived. Now my Surge still had the sleeve with the file attachment with it & I was happy to find out that the sleeve with the file WILL ... I've taken it out & put it back in many times & the sleeve stays put. For me, a Leatherman tool should have a leather sheath & now 2 of mine do. Maybe I'll eventually pick up another for my blacked-out Super Tool 300, who knows. If you're looking to replace your sheath, go for it, you won't be disappointed.

I like how the sheath looks and fits my Leatherman tool, but in only a dozen or so times I have used the sheath the stitching for the belt strap has completely come apart at both the top and the bottom of the loop. It's at the point where the loop has completely fallen off the sheath. By comparison, I've used my (less expensive) Leather Box Sheath almost every day for 15 years with no issues. I love and have numerous Leatherman products, but this one is the rare disappointment among them.
I purchased this sheath to replace the original sheath which came with my Super Tool 300. I really liked the fit of the tool, the security of the snap closure, and the appearance of the sheath. Unfortunately in less then 6 months, the belt loop snapped into near the upper attachment point. The stitching held, however the leather itself was very thin, and did not hold up to everyday usage. Very disappointed as the quality of the sheath did not live up to the Leatherman quality which I have become accustomed to during over 30 years of utilizing Leatherman tools on a daily basis.
I have had three leathermans over the years. I was pleased with the strength of the surge but disappointed in the Velcro sheath- very inconvenient to remove and replace when working. You almost have to stop what you are doing and use two hands to remove and replace it. So I ordered the leather sheath. VERY disappointed. The holding strap is sewn to the sheath. A very weak way to secure a much stronger and somewhat heavier tool. Whereas the wave I have had for years the strap is secured by four large rivets and still doesn’t show any signs of weakness.I ordered another leather sheath for the surge but realized it would probably suffer the same failure as the first one. So I cut slits in the holder for the belt and now it is SECURE! More engineering needs to be done ... MoreI have had three leathermans over the years. I have included a picture of my sheath now and feel it is much, much better than the original.
I somehow lost my Leatherman Supertool 300 a few weeks ago after a series of workmen were in and out of my house doing some construction work. That Supertool had become my favorite multi-tool and was my EDC in the old black nylon sheath. The tool went missing, but not the nylon sheath. So, I went to the Leatherman website to order a replacement, I decided to buy leather in both brown and black. So, I ordered the tool along with the black leather sheath and for when I was wearing brown leather belt and shoes, I ordered a Heritage Sheath as well. This is my second Heritage Sheath, my first I bought many years ago for my Leatherman Wave multi-tool. I must admit that I am hard on my sheaths since the way I wear my Leatherman multi-tools puts the sheath directly up ... This is my second Heritage Sheath, my first I bought many years ago for my Leatherman Wave multi-tool. I must admit that I am hard on my sheaths since the way I wear my Leatherman multi-tools puts the sheath directly up against the seat belt buckle when I slide into my pickup seat. My original is now much more than 10 years old, and though it is a bit misshapen from thousands of entry and exits to my pickup and being snapped and unsnapped to access my Leatherman- the belt loop has held, the stitching has held up around the perimeter, and it still looks decent enough to wear with my jeans when I am running errands, etc. This new larger Heritage Sheath looks to be the same quality workmanship I have come to expect from Leatherman products. It looks good, feels substantial, and appears to be just as good as my older Heritage Sheath. In fact, now that I compare the new to the old, it might be time to retire the older sheath and buy myself a new Heritage Sheath for my Wave multi-tool.
I ordered one and the stitching ripped in a matter of days. Leatherman customer service was excellent and immediately shipped me a new one. The stitching on that one also ripped in about two weeks. I like the vintage design and small size but the quality is poor. I may fox it myself one day but I just ordered a cheap holster with no stitching on eBay and use that now. I have a rebar.
The leather is the usual thin pressed, lower quality cardboard type it's been for over a decade. the quality of these sheaths has varied from excellent back in the 70's - 80's to very poor and now they are mediocre. The leather expands in thickness if it gets wet and after it's oiled with a leather dressing. Then it gets so loose the weight of the Surge causes the belt-loop to sag terribly. But at least it looks more like leather at that point than the pressed thin cardboard it came new looking like.Overall it's usable, however, the price point is not great for the kind of leather it's made of. It strictly depends on how your standards are the leather a product is made from. For occasional use it seems like it will hold up just fine, for daily rough use on a person ... It strictly depends on how your standards are the leather a product is made from. For occasional use it seems like it will hold up just fine, for daily rough use on a person that spends time out in all types of weather, it's iffy. I work outside in rain, snow, heat and cold. A good leather sheath should not stretch when it gets wet or is oiled like this does. The leather should have been stretched to it's max before being used to make an item, not just while forming the leather around the item it's supposed to hold. With that said, just realize that this particular sheath is completely machine built. It appears to be heat pressed around a mold then allowed to cool in that shape before the sewing process. This is why the leather is thin and cardboard like. The heat takes the life out of the leather. JMHO...
I was kinda shocked, seems extremely poorly made. The snap closure was significantly off center and a much smaller snap than my old leatherman cases, the stitching ended at different heights on the left and right. The belt loop on the back was sewn on at an angle, not parallel to the case. The edges were uneven and cut in a way that the distance between stitching and edge was inconsistent. When unsnapped and layed flat, the top closure portion isn't even in line with the rest of the case, the piece of leather that makes up the back and top closure was cut with a pretty hard lean to the left. TBH I'm not even sure it's leather, definitely not the "fuzzy on one side, smooth on the other" type of leather in the product image. the product image shows nice thin gold ... I hate to say it because I love leatherman, but this thing is poc.
