This is...the sheath.I've heard that there used to be flimsy plastic ones, but I'm not that old. I AM old enough to remember when leather(ish) ones came standard for even budget tools, and that was nice but I agree that the Nylon is probably actually sturdier. The black on is standard. It does the work. You probably need one. This one probably fits your knife. You probably didn't even have to buy it but, if you're here buying a new one for some reason...maybe consider the version with side pockets? Its not much more expensive and it has cool functionality for carrying flashlights or bit extenders if you're into that.

Great quality, wrong size on the chart and pathetic reply to my email to sort it out.

There's enough room to put 2 fingers through the loop it now has above the tool with the flap buttoned. This now catches on everything all day getting in and out of my truck or equipment on site (skid steers are the worst) I also ordered a grey sheath as that's what it came with and it hides the dirt much better than black, but they sent me a black one. Crossing the road the other day, after fishing a river outside of Bozeman MT with my dog by my side and a rainbow trout in hand, I heard a clack clack clack on the ground.. I've carried my Leatherman everyday for more then a year in a Standard Super Tool Nylon Sheath - 4.5" and absolutely loved it. I ordered this sheath when I originally purchased my Surge because the sheath that was going to come with it (the large Molle sheath) just seemed tacky for a lack of a better word. I was in the Marines and was not looking to wear a piece of issued molle gear as a civilian. I had my name inscribed on my Surge, I am proud of it and feel as if I am ready for anything with it on my person. I knew I was lucky so I ordered a new sheath when I got home. Being logical and understanding the cause of the failure in the sheath (the Velcro) I was into the idea of the new clasp set up Leatherman opted to go with no doubt due to other Velcro failures. When I finally tore into the bag my new sheath was mailed in my worries came to light. It's boxy and not nearly as aesthetically pleasing as my former sheath and I noticed (being the marine that I am) that the loop your belt runs through was not sown in straight. But I figured I would put my jeans on and strap it in to give it a go. The first thing I noticed was the great retention in the part it sits in. The Surge fits nice and snug.. I like that. When I went to buckle the new buckle system for the first time I noticed how loosely it strapped. I couldn't cinch it down like I did with the Velcro. The next thing was the look of it. It's a rectangle and resembles the ugly molle sheath I had already turned away from carrying. The corners grab your shirt and it's just all in all awkward. I don't like it.. ** so to fix my situation I am going to carefully cut the Velcro off my old holster that I loved and try to fashion the same retention design as the new sheath then order a new Standard super tool nylon sheath and do the same to it.

Leatherman made better!

Leatherman Medium Nylon SheathThe original nylon sheath I had came with what I believe was one, if not the first Leatherman in the country. It has patent pending stamped on it and had it gifted to me sometime before 2000. I needed to replace the sheath as the elastic sides had stretched beyond useful and the knife fell out when I leaned over. Unfortunately warranty doesn’t last 20 years. The new sheath is a good snug fit. The knife is secure, even with out the cover buttoned up. About the only suggestion for improvement I can offer is regarding the belt loop. The current one only holds the knife vertically. I preferred the older versions inclusion of a loop to hold it horizontally as well.I prefer leather, but this wasn’t available at the time. Have both med and lrg pocket sheaths. First bought the large for my Signal as thats what the size guide recommended. However even with the sheath fully loaded with tool, bit kits, flashlight, pen; the closure flap seemed too big. I got slightly annoyed with that after a while so i bought the medium pocket sheath and it is a perfect fit. Have a few months on the sheaths now with no quality issues. Definitely the best sheath on the market IMO for Quality, functionality, and price. Its a home run.

Nylon sheath
20 September 2020

My Surge fits in it perfect. My complaint is the low quality snap that pops open multiple times everyday. My original sheath was a combination of leather and nylon, and it lasted a very long time. It eventually wore out and I was forced to replace it with this nylon version. This purchase is for the second nylon sheath in a year. The snap failed on the first one, and I can see that this one is going to fail within a few months. I gave up on carrying a small AA flashlight in the accessories loop with this sheath, because they aren't strong enough to last a month, and led flashlights aren't cheap enough to be losing them. Somehow the failed snaps haven't caused me to lose my Surge yet, but it's only a matter of time. Please bring back the original version!

Poor design compared to other models

I personally hate this sheath. Others may like it ok, but I hate it. Im giving it 2/stars instead of one because the quality of construction seems ok and will hold the tool securely. It will probably last awhile, too. The button on this sheath will probably last longer than the Velcro on the other sheath, but its a little more difficult to open and close this sheath. There are trade-offs with the designs. The bad: it holds the tool too tightly, and with my large hands, its difficult to get out one-handed when I need it. My hands are large and strong, but its difficult for me to get my Wave out easily. It also does not have the hole at the bottom that allows you to place the tool in unfolded and ready to go, nose down. This hole is useful so you have a place to put the tool down while youre using it. It does not have the pockets necessary for the bits or the extender, like the other nylon sheath has. If you do not need or use these features, this sheath might be a 4-star sheath for you. But its still more difficult to access my Wave in this sheath. Its frustrating for me, because this is the sheath that came with my new Wave+ (I have two Waves that came with the good sheaths), and I hate this sheath so much, Id have bought the older Wave just to get the good sheath. The other sheath is far superior.

So close to being perfect

I've been a Leatherman owner/user for over 30 years and, excluding the OG leather sheaths, this (and the models with side pockets) has to be one of the best sheaths: sturdy nylon, snap button closing, good stitching, and I can carry a Removable Bit Driver kit in it without being bulky( as a matter of fact, it becomes form fitting for the kit and tool); so close to being perfect. However, there were two features that I missed from the previous iteration: the front accessory pocket behind the loop side of the closing, and being able to carry it horizontally. To remedy these, I did (4) stitches over the original ones going from top to bottom on both sides of the front panel, and then opened/removed the top horizontal stiching, effectively making a pocket between the ... MoreI've been a Leatherman owner/user for over 30 years and, excluding the OG leather sheaths, this (and the models with side pockets) has to be one of the best sheaths: sturdy nylon, snap button closing, good stitching, and I can carry a Removable Bit Driver kit in it without being bulky( as a matter of fact, it becomes form fitting for the kit and tool); so close to being perfect. However, there were two features that I missed from the previous iteration: the front accessory pocket behind the loop side of the closing, and being able to carry it horizontally. To remedy these, I did (4) stitches over the original ones going from top to bottom on both sides of the front panel, and then opened/removed the top horizontal stiching, effectively making a pocket between the elastic band and the nylon. For horizontal carry, I made a nylon strap using a piece of 2" nylon webbing and a couple of snaps that I pass through the belt loop. This is my second modified sheath, and both have been excellent since then; with this latest one I can carry my Rebar and it's Removable Bit Driver without the fear of loosing the bit kit as I remove the tool because it now rides inside the pocket, and not the main compartment. the horizontal carry allows me to carry it more comfortably snags a lot less on stationary objects; also, does not show when using an untucked shirt.LTG, please consider the "front pocket modification", as it is a relatively easy manufacturing change that can improve the versatility of the sheath, and I'm sure will be appreciated by many users. Thanks for your great tools and selection.

Oh neat! Another one where I'm first to review. This is exactly like the black one, but in grey. That...might be why there are no other reviews. Not much to say.Nylon pouches are utilitarian. Nobody looks cool wearing one. If anything they proudly announce "I am here to fix PROBLEMS not do FASHION!" and that can be cool in certain contexts. My Free P2 came with this grey one. I like it. It fits....but I wear a black box leather one most of the time. It feels snazzier.
