A bit dissppointed

I ordered three Signals as gifts for friends. Each one was customized to the individual. I enjoyed the customization process, but once I received them I was disappointed with the delivery condition. Each leatherman was covered in debris from what looked like the etching process. The tools were dirt and greasy. The bright colors of teal, yellow, and pink were dirty and some of the plastic didn't come clean after using some SD-20 (gentle degreaser) on the tools. I also noticed that "USA" is not stamped or labeled anywhere on these tools which feels suspicious. I was under the impression that the Signal was made in the States for what it costs with the customizations. I'd very much like to buy an ARC, but I'm not sure it's worth the cost based on how these signals look.

Backpacking, Bike Touring, or Overlanding? ESSENTIAL!

The full sized 1/4" socket (they call it a box-end wrench) is what sets this tool apart (the hammer and ferro rod are "cute", but the hex socket is really the ticket!). This is my #1 tool for bike touring, and overlanding. Get a 1/4" hex extension and some hex bits and you've got yourself a L-handled wrench and a pocket-sized tool kit (I've got Allen wrenches up to 10mm, hex-head drivers, torx up to T40, plus all the handy flat inserts from Leatherman). Add a 1/4" socket adapter and the sky's the limit! (well, torque is the limit, but you get the picture). It also takes a lot of effort to put in all 6 stakes (8 if its real windy) in my backpacking tent. If you're car camping, I recommend keeping a full sized hammer or mallet with you, but this is all I carry when backpacking. Same goes with the ferro rod. I have a better backup fire-starter in my car camping kit, but between a lighter and this ferro rod, this is all I have when backpacking. The only tool this is missing is a fine-toothed saw with a course file on one side and fine file on the other. If it had that, this would be my favorite EDC tool, and I'd probably have 3 or 4 of these! Please come out with a Signal + that adds a fine toothed saw and files!

Fantastic tool, but not always practical.

I received this Signal as a birthday gift three years ago (my first Leatherman). I didn’t use it much at first, but I carried it with me in a pocket or backpack for a while so I would have it if I needed it. Over time I found more and more uses for it and began using it more frequently. I started using it even more when I started a job at an outdoor gear rental shop. I came to love using it even more than I thought. My only gripe is that most of the tools on it aren’t that useful for 99% of daily life. I use the knife and the pliers the most, followed by the bit driver. I use the awl every once in a while and have used the can opener only once or twice. Good tool but watch your thumb
4 March 2023

I love my new Signal. I use it frequently and the blades are holding up well. My one observation/critique is that the bottom serrated portion of the blade has cut my thumb more than once whilst opening the blade in the usual thumb opening motion. As the blade opens using the right side of your thumb, your thumb naturally begins roll with the blade as it moves from the closed '6 o'clock' position to the fully opened '12 o'clock' position. Somewhere around the '9 o'clock' position your thumb can get caught by the serrations and you end up losing a small slice of flesh. It's happened a few times and I shrugged it off but this last time it dug a bit deeper and drew a little blood. I'm no stranger to knives that open in this manner and never had any issue with my previous EDC (Skeletool) so I'm considering this a small design flaw. Other than that I have no complaints. It comes in handy every day. I'm sure I'll eventually either lose enough flesh to flatten my thumb down to where it's no longer an issue ;) or remember to be a little more cautious when flipping the blade open.

It's okay
12 December 2023

I've had this tool for a little over a week now and have carried it in the pocket since I bought it and I haven't really used it much so far other than opening a few packages. But I like most of the things about it, like the pocket clip, the thick blade, wood saw, pliers and awl. But the hammer function seams fragile with thin metal components as it appears to be a cast component. The regular bit holder needs a form of retention because bits will fall out. The attached knife sharpeners dimond coating is wearing off and I haven't used it and it seams gimmicky like the whistle and ferro rod. I wish there where other attachments available for those two pieces. Other than that I'm happy with the product.

Knife lock fails
7 December 2023

I like this tool. It is a good all-purpose camping/keep in my vehicle go-to. The only complaint is that the knife does not securely lock into the open position. From what I’ve read, my experience is not unique. The last thing I (or anyone) need is for my knife lock to fail and cause injury. From what I can tell, there is too much paint(?) that prevents the knife to securely lock. I’ve sanded the area down a bit, and although it works better, the knife will still sometimes release with unreasonably little force. It is still, otherwise, an awesome tool. Despite the knife locking issue, my Signal is still in use. I simply remain cognizant of the knife issue while using.* I carry a Wave+ EDC, and the knife on that model does not have the same issue. Looks Cool & Handles Many Tasks
18 September 2023

I recently bought the Coyote Tan Signal and carry it in my pocket every day. It seems to have everything I could need at any given time and is on the lighter side compared to other Leatherman's. It looks pretty badass, too. Unlike a lot of other reviewers, I don't mind having the combo blade, rather than two separate blades. Also, the combo blade on this is nice and thick. I do not mind using the screwdriver with the handle being offset, either. So far, I have used the caibeaner as a bottle opener, the pliers, the knife, and the flat and phillips screwdrivers. All have done their job. The pliers did lock up on me after cutting some wire, but I sprayed some silicone lubricant in them and opened and closed them repeatedly until actually broken in. They are better than new now. The clasp on the caribeaner is a little bent. I think I got it this way. Not a big deal, but I do notice it when I stare at this thing in admiration. I like the lock on these to keep everything securely closed when in your poclet. I only use the sheath when I need to throw it in a bag with other things. The sheath is a nice, sturdy nylon material with a snap. So far, I have no complaints or regrets with buying this, other than the price going up the last few years.

More novelty than survival tool?
15 June 2024

Having multiple survival aids in one small, multi-tool package - blade, saw, whistle, awl, and ferro rod - appealed to me. I use my tools before relying on them and I am glad I did. After use, I felt the features are usable with these considerations. The saw seemed a little flimsy but worked well. Using the hammer on tent pegs (expectedly) led to very minor injury. The featured sharpener and ferro rod/whistle are small and require attention and fine motor skills that may be suffering in a bad situation. The ferro rod requires special care to achieve success with its small size and small sparks. The ferro rod and saw did ignite commercial tinder and cotton balls but not the natural material I had at hand, and the small size made use interesting. The sharpener and ferro remove from the inside and the tool locks closed. The standard multi-tools worked fine. The Signal is light. I like the carabiner and socket driver/lanyard hole design. Overall, I like the appearance and concept, but would prefer a non-serrated blade option. As is, I think the Signal is a good tool for use in good conditions, skill learning, and skill testing. And it will work in a pinch. But, while I rely on Leatherman multi-tools, I would pick a different model and combine it with a bigger/better ferro rod and survival kit.

Nice little multi - not the quality that leatherman used to be
7 January 2024

I own (now) 4 leatherman multi tools. Just got the signal for Christmas. It’s definitely the coolest looking of my leather mama (black and coyote brown). I like the new locking mechanism but I worry about it lasting over time. Swings open easily if not locked. The overall quality isn’t the same as my sidekick or wave (and wave plus). I’ll still carry the sidekick as my edc because it just feels more reliable. Will probably clip the new signal onto my backpack or something as a backup. Cool design, cool color combo, just not the quality and sturdiness that I’m used to in a leatherman.
