I returned it thinking it was a fluke and re-ordered only to find that while the second surge was tighter than the first, but still not where my original was, it had one locking release piece that was so loose that it just clanked around with any small movement, unlike the tool locking release on the other side or on any of the previous tools. Super annoying and absolutely unacceptable with what these things cost. If you’re looking for a quality tool, look elsewhere I guess. It seems Leatherman just craps these things out with out any consideration to quality control or their final fit and finish anymore.

The number of tools on the Surge is the reason I chose this model. Previously I've owned the Skeletool which was also good, but after it was lost I decided to upgrade. The pliers are strong and have hardened teeth, the wirecutters work well, and the saws and blades are sharp and effective. The wood saw blade can be replaced with any T-shank jigsaw blade, allowing for infinite types of sawblades. I found I use the scissors more than I thought I would. The scissors cut well and are only limited by their length (7/8" cutting area) as they need to be small enough to fit in the tool. There are also forums where people have been able to mod and fit other tools into the bitholder and T-shank holder, like chisels and drill bits. It is practically a toolbox in your pocket. ... MoreThe number of tools on the Surge is the reason I chose this model. It is practically a toolbox in your pocket. It seems that Leatherman has put some thought into the steels they use for the tool. All the parts are very strong for a tool that is this small. I feel that competitor's tools are made with cheaper steels and hence will not give the same performance. The only downside is the Surge is a bit hefty as an EDC item. However this is a small price to pay for the extensive usability. I have the molle compatible sheath which fits the tool and extra sawblades. It can be worn on a belt or attached to a backpack.Overall this is a tool that has been well designed and no corners were cut in the design or manufacture. Well worth what I paid for it and I expect to see many years of service.

As good as I hoped it would be.

The tolerances seem tight; the needle-nose meets perfectly and has a little bite right at the end; just perfect, and could be used for some pretty fine work. I got the black one and it came in great condition with a touch of oil where it should be. I like pretty much everything about it to be honest. I'll enjoy using it. I also got the bit set; 40 bits, very nice. I also like the ratchet very much; it fits well and can be used alone, also. So if you have a decoration there, it will be covered by the clip when you use it. No biggie, just be aware if you have it customized. Second: I bought the "Surge Set" that comes with the bit set, ratchet, and clip. This set DOES NOT come with the sheath shown on the "Surge Set" picture on the web site, which is also listed as "Nylon Sheath with Pockets", and also on the picture of the Surge you buy by itself. THAT sheath has a holder for your bit extension or ratchet you can see in the picture, and a snap. The one you actually get has no holder for the ratchet, has velcro instead of a snap, and is big enough for the Surge, but nothing else. There is not room for any of the bit set or ratchet or anything else. The tool is so great I'm not too discouraged about it; however, I will buy a sheath somewhere else since I can't seem to trust how they display them on the Leatherman site.

Best Tool in Leatherman's Lineup
11 February 2023

This tool has everything I need, and nothing I don't. The main blade maintains a sharp edge when used for cutting fruit, opening letters, and other precise tasks. I relegate all nasty jobs like cardboard box breakdown and rope cutting to the serrated blade, which helps preserve the main blade's edge, and the gut hook works wonders on stubborn zip-ties.The saw makes quick work of irritating limbs on my bike commute, up to about an inch in diameter. The wood file works well, and the diamond file works for metal burrs and hangnails, alike. All of the exterior tools open easily one handed, including the file and saw (after some practice). The pliers open easily as well (if properly lubricated), and the joint is rock solid, even after many high-torque twisting sessions. ... MoreThis tool has everything I need, and nothing I don't. The pliers open easily as well (if properly lubricated), and the joint is rock solid, even after many high-torque twisting sessions. I've replaced my wire cutters, but only because I tried cutting through a hardened nail stuck in my tire, and the process was simple and painless. The bit driver, coupled with a ratcheting bit extender and bit kit, is indispensable, and easily my favorite tool. The can opener works well enough that I donated my old crank-operated can opener to my sister. This can opener, however, does a miserable job at opening pop-top bottles, but this is not an issue for me, as I don't drink. The scissors, while small, are comfortable and cut well enough for small arts-and-crafts tasks, but I would not recommend using them for much more than that. The micro-screwdriver has come in handy a number of times for repairing glasses and small electronics, and it also doubles as a poker for "reset" buttons. The pry bar has held its own against some seriously stuck parts, but it has bent ever so slightly in the process. I wish the pry bar had a chiseled edge, as it would make for a great scraper, again sparing the main blade from tasks like that. The US and metric rulers are useful and easy to read, and the flat portions they constitute make for smooth plier handles. The anodized aluminum plating has excellent tactile characteristics, and shows only small scuffs and scratches after countless drops onto various hard surfaces. I have carried, used, and abused this multitool every day for more than 3 years in the rain, sleet, heat, dust, and dirt, and other than surface blemishes, it's good as new. An old toothbrush, Castile soap, and Ballistol go a long way in keeping this tool ship-shape, and I expect many more years with this tool as my companion. I will only upgrade when Leatherman designs a multitool that allows for one-handed exterior opening of all tools, while maintaining the tool lineup of the Charge+.

An excellent upgrade from an original Leatherman Wave (I had a blade break on my original Wave and the Leatherman warranty replaced it with this upgrade - commendable for Leatherman as a company), the Wave+ has all the tools I need without unnecessary extras - good cutting scissors, the replaceable screwdriver bits (with both sizes I need, good for standard and detail work), replaceable (and more durable than older versions) wire cutter blades, a quality standard knife and separate serrated blade, along with the ever-classic needlenose pliers that made Leatherman famous. The same location is used for a pocket clip if you prefer those, I personally do not like pocket clips, but have regular requirements for tweezers. The only con I can find is that it is a little heavier and bulkier in a pocket than I would prefer, but would be hard to tradeoff ruggedness or any of the included tools to get down to a lower weight. It would also benefit from slightly more aggressive cross-hatch file, and better opening thumbholes for the knife blades.Leatherman is my first choice for a multitool, I haven't found anything else comparable in quality and value.

From a Rebar for 12 years to a Surge for life
10 September 2022

After 12 years I decided to upgrade from a rebar I carried since high school to a new leatherman that’s better suited to what life throws at me nowadays. The Leatherman surge is a very nice upgrade over the rebar. The weight and the size of it inspire confidence that I can tackle many of the everyday tasks at home or at work. The addition of outside access scissors is very nice to have. The bit exchanger as well as the swappable saw/files really adds to life long use. The surge has a very nice, well put together design and you can see the strength and quality of the tools in both the smooth unfolding of the pliers and the strength of the joints that hold all the tools together. Straight up love this thing

So this review is honest as it gets. I ordered the surge as a birthday gift to myself, absolutely used it as a tool, did not baby the thing. I broke the awl on my first one attempting to align an ignition switch in the correct orientation. I also been the flat screwdriver bit loosening water clamps and snapped off the pocket clip with no effort. Got in touch with leatherman support and they had me a new one out. So skeptical of the tool I absolutely put it through its paces, I carry it every day, and use it for my occupation and hobbies. The new one outlived all expectations, tackling thigs from automotive repair, to working on equipment and firearms on the range. I added the ratcheting bit extender and bit kit. It sees reasonable every day use and does very well, ... MoreSo this review is honest as it gets. It sees reasonable every day use and does very well, as expected for a tool at its price point. I can say that it is worth the money and have order the crunch as well.

Versatile tool but could be better.

I have had the wave + for over year and it has come in very handy in desperate situations. It offers a lot of great functions as you know, but I think there is some major issues to consider that should have been corrected in the earlier revisions. One of them being the plier pinch that happens due the outer tools (knife, saw, file, and serrated knife) coming together when using the pliers. This may seem like a silly complaint, but once you get your first blood blister from using your pliers you will never forget. I have more complaints, but my last complaint is quality control. My wave + has sharp edges and extremely stiff pliers, when there shouldn't be any sharp edges which makes the tool uncomfortable and rough at times. I think for the high price tag of $120, which I payed $110 in 2021 the MT should not have these issues. I think there are better options for the price. I would recommend to take a look at the Free P4 unless you absolutely need a micro bit driver and file. Even though the Free P4 is little more pricey it includes a pocket clip which the wave does not.

Very nice tool

I bought this Leatherman as a surprise for someone, but I do own one exactly the same, but with a nylon sheath. I pretty much always carry it with me!I like the Leatherman Wave + because it has a lot of nice tools. For me the scissors on the Leatherman tool are a must. A lot of multitools or Victorinox knives come with scissors and some of the cheaper Leatherman’s do too. But the type of scissors that the Wave + has are the best scissors on a multitool I have ever used.I do also really like the one hand opening of both knives, the pliers come in very handy very often. And I would for sure go for the Heritage sheath because, come on it’s a Leather man!And the nylon sheaths do work but the button starts coming lose by itself after being used a bit. What I do really ... MoreI bought this Leatherman as a surprise for someone, but I do own one exactly the same, but with a nylon sheath. I would love it if Leatherman would make like a Heritage Curl. (The Curl is a lot cheaper but doesn’t come with a Leather sheath included)Overall I do recommend this tool, but now you know what I don’t like about it as well.I hope that anyone who reads this will find it helpful.
