LEGO 42096 Porsche 911 RSR - Technic

As a huge Porsche 911 fan, I was already excited when I purchased this kit, but it surpassed all my expectations! The entire time I was building it, I couldn't help but marvel at the impressive engineering behind it. It's solid, weighty, and larger than I initially anticipated. I was truly impressed and would highly recommend it if you're considering getting one. The only minor challenge was applying the stickers, as getting them perfectly straight was tricky, but after figuring out a strategy, it wasn't too bad. Overall, it was so much fun to build, and it's a fantastic collector's item, especially since they seem to be limited editions.

A good challenge

this is a great model if you want a challenge. it requires a lot of dedication and is one of the more lengthy processes with a great finish. It is similar to the relatives that are the porsche bugatti and rally car but it lacks the gear box and lighting systems. this isn't something i'm sad about because the price and difficulty were good enough for me. the roof is quite flimsy, only properly attached with some piping and one support in the rear. this can be seen as a flaw but personally, i want to see the engine that i screwed up on with my friend multiple times function so a removable roof helps. the dash board gets in the way of the steering wheel mechanisms which i find slightly annoying but that doesn't matter too much.from what i can tell, it looks fairly ... Morethis is a great model if you want a challenge. it requires a lot of dedication and is one of the more lengthy processes with a great finish. It is similar to the relatives that are the porsche bugatti and rally car but it lacks the gear box and lighting systems. this isn't something i'm sad about because the price and difficulty were good enough for me. the roof is quite flimsy, only properly attached with some piping and one support in the rear. this can be seen as a flaw but personally, i want to see the engine that i screwed up on with my friend multiple times function so a removable roof helps. the dash board gets in the way of the steering wheel mechanisms which i find slightly annoying but that doesn't matter too much.from what i can tell, it looks fairly easy to motorise and has great potential for it with plenty of unused space just under the trunk which is meant for seeing the engine. you may need to be a bit more skilled to incorporate the steering motor as it has to be installed either during manufacturing, or after removing the numerous panels which could be easy if using the instructions to strategically do so. personally, i haven't because the motors cost a butt tonne just for being called lego.the only real flaws are the fact that you can't pick it up too well because of the roof and steering is really annoying because the wheel is badly attached and i once pulled it off. you essentially should either steer uncomfortably with the steering wheel that falls off, try moving the actual wheels as they move, motorise it, or just have it as a demo. as for the roof... im not sure. there is also one problem that drives me up the wall. im not sure if its my fault but when i reverse the car, the wheels rub against the frame around it making it so annoying to use. i really want to think that it's just me because it ruins a perfectly good design.over all, it is a good model and worth the money especially if you have a remote controlled vehicle as well (you could switch and swap parts) but not too good for playing with after. but hey. i get technics for a challenge, the mechanism and obviously the looks. if it doesn't have these then i wouldn't have bought it.

Average

Well, this set is bad and good at the same time. For $150 and having 1,580 pieces, this set is absolutely immense. It is almost as big as the Chiron, the Sián, and the 911 GT3 RS, but for half or less of the price. But gave this set an average rating because the body is full of gaps and holes, there are almost 60 stickers, the headlights bulge unrealistically, the engine compartment looks like a pile of technic pieces, and the whole car only has 2 features, one of which hardly functions. Yes, I did say 2 features on a $150 TECHNIC SET!!! And, the steering has the most backlash I have ever seen on a Lego set, and it barely works. Beautiful end result terrible build

Firstly can I saw the end result looks amazing and I think it’s worth every penny I spent on it yet, building this was bar far the most annoying thing ever. First off there’s 1580 pieces in this build, not to mention the majority being small pieces, and NO bags were labeled with numbers. I’ve never came across a Lego set were the bags weren’t labeled. This made the build far more difficult since you’ll have to open all 1580 parts at once. I also have a cat meaning I can not leave Lego pieces out so when I’m done building for the day all the parts get mixed together in a bag so I was unable to keep them organized. Then my book guide was messed up. I had a whole section of about 15 pages missing causing me to go online and look for the digital book. I’m very happy with the outcome, but I don’t see the reasoning behind not labeling the bags. All big Lego sets like this should be organized and labeled so building can be easy going and enjoyable.

Detailed Model Great Value

I purchased this set to display alongside the GT3 and was a little bit disappointed to find out that the completed model is a little bit smaller than it’s predecessor however what it lacks in size it makes up for in great detail. This set comes with the most decals, especially large decals (two full sheets) of any LEGO set I’ve ever purchased. The build process is fun. The first 60% of the build is mostly internal structure and the last 40% fleshes out the body panels and overall vehicle shape. It doesn’t have that many play or action features aside from what you’d expect it any other technic set. If you’re a fan of Porsche and/or want a great sports car display model, this set delivers. The white/red/black color combination is unique and eye catching! Excellent build

For a small 1850 piece kit, it is an excellent build. I built it in between Xmas decorations that is why it took so long but it was fun. It included around 50 plus decals which, at the beginning, I was not to excited about, but as I got into the building process, I became very good at placing them straight and looking good. I can only imagine the price of the kit if, instead of decals, they had the bricks printed! Wow! It may have double ore more the price! One good factor is that the bags were not numbered! That made the kit a bit more challenging. I have built other kits like this and it creates another different set of rules on how tow sort the brick to ease the build. But for a build, it means a delay, if you don’t have a stash of your own to pick from as I do, of about 15 days from the date you order until you receive them. That is if you don’t have to go through the Customer Support, as was my case, and your phone area code (as is my case 787 Puerto Rico) is not included in the support 800 number! Then you have to use the slow email process that due to high email activity, takes longer than 15 days to solve an issue. At any rate, I emailed my missing parts request and thanks to my stash, I was able to sort of finish my build using gray bricks instead of white. The kit is not simple to build, it is challenging and engineering did a great job in replicating the 911. Don’t forget this is a Lego replica and at the end of the instruction book, you will find a photo of the actual car and the kit. It just looks fantastic! The quality of the instruction book shows a little deterioration, I have to assume, due to the increased amount of work. Pages are wrinkled, some are not square and show the trim edges. Nothing that will stop the building process but not the quality Lego has used to provide. I think Lego has lost quality due to quantity. My personal opinion. I am still a Lego fan, just ordered the Colosseum and can’t wait for it’s arrival to start building that wonderful creation. Merry Christmas to all and Happy building!!!!

Extremely detailed

This is a phenomenal kit. The mechanical detail Lego has chosen to employ here is incredible (though I suppose it should be expected considering it's from the Technic line. Here are some of my highlights.* The rear differential. This is my first big Technic set and though I knew Technic focuses on mechanisms AND as I had read the box I did have an idea as to what to expect. That said, as an engineer and a previous auto engineer, I was borderline giddy as I was putting together the differential. It is a perfectly working differential.* Double wishbone suspension and working steering rack. Includes springs in the shape of damper though no dampers. (But then again this is Lego and not a track RC car.)* Size. This thing is massive.* Sticker detail to sell the design ... MoreThis is a phenomenal kit. This is a serious project, not an hour long diversion. How long it will take you to build it depends on a few things, including how fast you work and the time you put into prep work though I would say 5 hours minimum. Prep work?* No numbered bags. Some here have complained that there are no numbered bags requiring you to open all bags and sort through the 1500 hundred pieces as you go. Yes, this is true. This project is as much puzzle and model as it is traditional Lego set. Spending time separating and sorting pieces just like a large jigsaw puzzle will pay dividends in the long run. But that is also the point. This isn't a hold-your-hand the entire way as so many (excellent) Lego sets do, this is part puzzle. Going into the project with that expectation will save you a lot of grief.* Working engine pistons in opposing 6 six cylinder engine.I supposed if I had a gripe it would be that there is only so close a car made of Technic pieces can get to looking like an actual Porsche. But that is such a small and minor thing compared the level of detail Lego puts into this kit and the hours of fun put into building an engineering marvel. Highly recommended.

This is my first large Technic build and having seen this built up in a local store I just couldn't wait to create my own version. Yes, they do enhance the look of the vehicle in general but some of them I just could not get right. The way the word Porsche is spread over the rear spoiler just looks a mess and I really did my best with it. This is such a visible piece on the completed vehicle and so torturous to even approximate how it should look I feel it should have been preprinted. Honestly, I just kept going and going until it was finished and I never felt jaded or tired whilst constructing the vehicle. I even had to be forced to stop to eat. Honestly this was really absorbing and watching the vehicle emerge from a bunch of random looking connectors and struts was incredible and made me immeasurably happy.If you are on the fence about getting a larger Technic kit I cannot recommend this vehicle highly enough. If anything it was actually easier than the smaller sets I've built. The only thing I would say is make sure you have a large stable building surface as this thing really takes up some space. Very good value for money

This was my very first Technic build. I originally wanted the Ferrari F40 but $300+ price tag was a bit out of my price range. The Porsche RSR at $149 seemed like a great deal albeit if its a tad smaller in scale.The build itself was very satisfying and to me, the end result looks terrific. Lego does some very clever things to acheive certain design aspects of the car. Particularly the rear of the car and the air diffuser- it looks fantastic.I found that using a very small pair of tweezers really helped me place the stickers nice and evenly. And I sorted all the parts by type in the beginning which really helped the process.My only bit of constructive criticism is with the engine. I think its SO cool how they designed it to function with the differential. Also integrating the crankshaft within the connecting rods as seperate little pieces was very clever. Now I understand that they want you to see the engine function and I appreciate that. However, I would have loved more engine detail- perhaps valve covers and an intake manifold with an air intake, maybe even exhaust headers. I understand, then you wouldnt see the pistons moving. But it would still be so cool to know they were under all that added realistic detail. I also agree with others that the wheels could have been a larger diameter. But these are very small little observations.All in all, this is a great entry level Technic kit and also, I must mention, Legos shipping was incredibly fast and efficient. Considering what we are all dealing with right now, I very much appreciated the people who are still working in these warehouses and allowing us to keep ourselves occupied.
