The instructions were easy to follow and the groups of bags not too large which aided sorting. The only area which could have been clearer was when rigging the block cable, the last one. I may have mis-read the instructions but missed a pulley so had to re-rig it.Once complete, it was surprising how much the crane would lift. The app also warns you that by slewing it will reduce the lifting capacity, as will lowering the jib.All in all a satisfying build and not too complicated.

To Lego:(1). Thank you for the new pieces!(2). More ballast please! Would be a great set for adding alternate instructions for an extended ballast.(3). Would be great to attach a video of the crane in action to this review... it's alot of fun.(4). This was the first set in which I found a deformed piece (#6348143). In general, the more expensive the set, the greater the challenge. If you want an easy build with perfect instructions, Duplo is a great place to start.(2). If the instructions were perfect, it wouldn't be a challenge. Completing a challenging set such as this is a very rewarding experience. Going back steps to see where you missed a piece or getting the string configuration wrong and seeing how the build doesn't work is part of the challenge and increases the satisfaction of completing it. If you don't have patience, then difficult/expert Lego sets are probably not for you.(3). Most importantly, this is Lego: if you don't like the instructions (or anything else about the build) then just do your own thing! The pieces are very versatile and you can do most most anything. For example, when I completed this set and discovered it couldn't lift the space shuttle, was that time to write a negative review about the crane being too weak? No! I saw one of the pictures in the instructions of one of the real world cranes with an extended ballast, so I tried building that and it worked. I had more fun trying to figure how how to do that than I did with the initial build.(4). Please note in the picutre: this set does not come with a space shuttle or the pieces for the extended ballast platform shown in the picture.

This set is amazing. It mimics the real life version of the Liebherr 13000 heavy lift crane. The power functions which can be controlled via smart phone make this an absolute joy to play with as well as teach basic concepts of weight and movement. Excellent tool for learning. The app does an amazing job of showing you load capacity, which will set off a warning if the machine is in danger of tipping. The crane moves effortlessly.
I wanted this set to be great - I really did. The other Technic cranes to this point have been fantastic, so I had high hopes for this massive set. The trouble started almost as soon as I opened the first manual. Multiple steps are not in logical order, pieces to add are often not highlighted, there are very, very few "actual size" references, and the model orientation turns without notification. As some others have noted, the intricacy of the gearing normally seen in a Technic model is not present here. The piece count issue isn't as big of a deal when thinking about all the individual parts combined into the new truss assembly pieces. The aesthetics of this model don't meet the normal realistic approach of Technic models. Understanding that scale comes into play ... MoreI wanted this set to be great - I really did. The piece count issue isn't as big of a deal when thinking about all the individual parts combined into the new truss assembly pieces. The aesthetics of this model don't meet the normal realistic approach of Technic models. Understanding that scale comes into play with a model like this, there are still ways to provide a more polished model. Lifting capacity is no where close to what would be expected when looking at the real crane on which this model is based. The inability to get additional pieces from this model (more truss sections, additional counterweights) is very disappointing. Overall, for the price, this was a flat out miss.
Many Lego fans will go leave bad reviews just because the set cost $700 and only contains around 2800 pieces but I think they are all wrong. The set is great a value in my opinion. The set is huge compared to most Lego technic sets and contains lots of motors and other huge pieces. I have always believed that price per piece doesn’t always matter and this is a key example of that. The actual set was enjoyable to build except for the part with the string and also impressive to see it come together. The set is also fun to see in action when controlling it through the app. However, I would only recommend this set to very experienced Lego builders as some parts (like the string) was challenging even for me.
I consider myself an expert builder, as I've built all the large Technic, Star Wars and Harry Potter sets. The Liebherr, however, is in a different league. It's not so much the complexity of the build, but you've really got pay close attention - super close attention - or you will end up with sore fingers as you try and go back and fix your mistake. It was a fun challenge, but there were a few moments were it did border on frustration. One of those had to be the first set of cabling (thread): the video was helpful, but moves a little too fast (note, too, the perspective of the video is from a distance, so it's hard to see which rung you need to run the thread over). I eventually figured it out, and the other steps involving cabling weren't as bad; still, it was ... MoreI consider myself an expert builder, as I've built all the large Technic, Star Wars and Harry Potter sets. I eventually figured it out, and the other steps involving cabling weren't as bad; still, it was frustrating. Also, the "Check Your Build" steps are nice, but they don't really indicate the amount of variability in what your model will look versus what is shown in the app (some bits of model were sagging/otherwise not perfectly straight as shown in app, so thought I'd done something wrong). Finally, the counterweights need to be secured: whenever you slightly move the crane they fall off -- this is really frustrating. Ultimately, I think this is a great set -- and a very big set, too (it dwarfs the Star Wars ATAT). Is it worth the high price? If you're a devoted LEGO fan, especially of large sets, I think you'll enjoy it. But this is most certainly not one for the meek!
I wish I had not preordered this one. I assumed it would be the usual Lego quality, it was not. It did not live up to the 2 yr wait for release. I was most shocked by the price for what was actually received. I doubt LIEBHERR will be very impressed after seeing the reviews for this kit. If you just have to have it go ahead. If your on the fence, jump and run to something else.
Contrary to the negative reviews mentioning that this set was missing all the gearing intricacies, I found this set to be finally something new from LEGO. I skipped so many large sets recently because I knew it would just be gearbox after gearbox after gearbox that I’ve built countless times, so this pulley system is not only fresh but it’s also teaching my kids something new when they observe this thing in action. Also most of the mechanics are on display instead of being hidden inside the model it’s just cool to see it all tick. My only criticism is that the ballast pieces were definitely odd; no studs, no holes, no beam integration… literally just chunks of plastic. No versatility to the pieces so I’m not sure what happened there in the design decision room. To Lego and Liebherr:The set misses most of the essence of Technic having a series of motors is great, but there are barely any of the connection and gearing intricacies that make good Technic sets great. No cleverness in the functions. It looks awful from any angle other than the judiciously chosen marketing shot ones. It's just unfinished. The whole point of panels is to cover things up; whether this is desirable or not is another question, but if a set uses them, then cover up battery packs etc. This besides the pointless and ugly unnecessary colors used (blue pins etc).Outrageously expensive. Few parts, low weight (apart from the counterweights), the chassis and tracks look very different from the real version. The counterweights don't have any studs or ... MoreTo Lego and Liebherr:The set misses most of the essence of Technic having a series of motors is great, but there are barely any of the connection and gearing intricacies that make good Technic sets great.
