This was a crazy build, for most part it was very enjoyable, and there's some really bizarre and unique building techniques involved that seriously surprised me, I don't think I've ever built a Lego set quite like this before. But there were quite a few moments throughout the build that were a bit frustrating, mainly the front of the van, the sliding door, and the the overly-complex roof. The roof was honestly the least enjoyable part of the build for me, and it's right at the very end too. It's a very intricate technic mechanism made of lots of small multi-coloured moving parts that were honestly a bit overwhelming, I spent way too long checking and double checking that I had it right, the instructions were quite hard to follow, but technic has never been my strong suit. On the plus side, the finished roof tent is really impressive, and super sturdy!The rest of the building process was fantastic, the engine and the interior were my favourite parts, there's loads of great details and really great techniques used. The folding bed and the fridge were especially cool, and I love the gas bottle in the back of the cupboard. I also really enjoyed putting the exterior panels on, the way the van takes shape and colour throughout the build is really cool.The finished product is truly a beautiful model, and looks great with everything opened up. It is unfortunately a lot more fragile than the other creator expert sets I've built, it's quite easy to break off pieces if you hold it wrong, which is quite the contrast to say the Creator Expert Fiat 500, which is built like a tank! But this isn't really for playing with anyway, it's a display piece, and looks fantastic when it's all set up.I built this set over the course of 1 day, and I think that was a mistake, it's a big build, bigger than I initially realised, and I would recommend spacing it out over a few days. I'm sure part of why I didn't enjoy building the roof was because it was right at the end, and I was pretty tired by that point. It gave the illusion that I was nearly finished because it was the last couple bags, but it took sooooo long.Oh yeah and I should mention, the set relies a bit too heavily on stickers, I would have preferred prints for the front vents, which were a real pain to line up properly.Overall though I definitely recommend it.

You breathe on it wrong and things come apart. The build sequence often means you're putting pressure on points that either aren't ready for that or never were going to be. Adding one element dislodges another. Sometimes elements feel superfluous (e.g. near the windscreen) and keep falling off when the next piece is added-- I even had to shake some dislodged bits out of the model and ultimately opted to leave them out because it took me long enough to figure out where to put them back that I concluded they weren't necessary. The sliding door instruction wasn't intuitive and the pop top doesn't sit flush as it should. Even once I was finished, tiles and plates were coming up at spots when I know for certain I'd placed them snugly and correctly.I'm not new to LEGO. I've been building since the early 80s, have built my own original models for years, and really do love a good challenge with cool techniques and surprises. But this model ended up being less fun to build than I'd hoped. I hate to think what a first-time builder would have gone through in trying it.I do recommend it for those who love VW, Creator vehicles, and just plain nice display pieces. But it for sure is a build that's not so much tricky as flawed and that can be frustrating.I don't mean to bash the designers-- they did a great job bringing the shape to life-- but this one just doesn't hit it out of the park, unfortunately.

Light My Bricks are the best company for LEGO lighting kits in my opinion. This is a brilliant kit for the T2 CamperVan. Includes everything you need to make the play with this van more enjoyable. Opening doors switching on lights, a realistic flickering lamp, and of course all the road lights. Comprehensive kit. Its a pity there isnt a "blueprint" with it like most kits. Great Kit, really enhances the van. Good Value.

This is a good looking lego once complete, however if you can get it finished and in one piece, super glue it and never touch it again. If you look at it wrong something will fall off and the design is so flimsy it will take you four hours and three anxiety attacks to put it back together. I am in the latter half of my 30s and have built legos my whole life. This set made me question if i would ever buy another lego. My lego time is for relaxing, following instructions, doing something with my hands and having a pretty finished product. This was the OPPOSITE of relaxing, i think i sank half a months worth of Clonazepam into this build. The front end is barely capable of staying together and on the van. The entire back door is held into place by literally two dots of contact, the roof does not open or close properly, the on time i tried to open it, the needlessly complex, ill fitting roof mechanism would not return to its place before taking out the aforementioned poorly designed back door with it, causing several hours of rebuilding a very simple (15-20 pieces) door that simply cannot support its own weight. the design is abysmally flimsy and whole parts of the vehicle will crumble in your hands over and over again if you are not a neurosurgeon (and probably even if you are) i was trying to pack it up to move and so many parts fell off and refused to go back together that the whole thing almost got tossed across the room. It is now just sitting in several pieces in a box, in the hopes that after i move i will be in a place where i somehow have the patience of mother Theresa to put it back together. I like the advanced sets, i like a challenge, this set is a torture device. If it was not a matter of immense personal pride and slight psychosis re: finishing things, i wiuld 100% return this, and demand they find someone to prescribe a replacement for my anxiety meds. I have never, in almost four decades of life, encountered another set this truly outraging. Im not sharing photos because they would either be a grown man sobbing or something truly nsfw.
I have built the Splitty and the Beetle sets previously and they were a real pleasure but this set whilst having some amazing features nearly broke me.It was all going smoothly until the tailgate gets added. Unfortunately I found the design here to be very weak as the pivot point is next to a brick join and there is not a lot of supporting bricks. I found it just popped apart with the gentlest nudge/resistance and this meant I was constantly repairing it during the remainder of the build (which was frustrating). On the completed van, if the roof is down you have to be very gentle to open it as it catches on the roof mechanism. (I think using a longer brick that went to the top of the door removing the join at this point would have made a much more stable ... Certainly, but consider the amazing attention to detail and the various solutions to tricky engineering problems, which in some cases are truly ingenious. Does this mean that bits can come off when operating some of the moving parts? Yes, but this is an 18+ model and clearly meant for display and general admiration, rather than hours of rugged play. Are you truly an expert builder and something breaks? Put it back, it's the gift that keeps on giving! Do you not like parts of the design? Fix it, that's what I did. I did find that the hinges of the rear door were held by only a single stud on 1x6 plates, so I replaced these with 1x8 plates. This means I had to reconfigure some of the outside tiling, making it slightly more angular. I also added a roof rack for the surfboard. I have seen many clever MOCs for this, but I tried for one that seemed more genuine to me and better fits the model scale. The board can still slide around somewhat, but it won't come sailing off the roof, which it won't anyway as long as my T2 sits there quietly and majestically in its box. I am mainly a Technics fan and this was my first venture into Creator, but I found it the most enjoyable and interesting build I have done so far. I did it together with my 8 year old daughter (also a Lego cognoscente), taking about 2 weeks at 1 stage per day. As Lego sets go, can't beat the experience at this price. But perhaps that will be surpassed by the UCS AT-AT, which I just acquired...

There are two 7-hole blue technic pieces at the back of the roof construction that with the design outlined in the instructions obstruct the closure and cause the roof to bend if you force it flat. However, if these pieces are replaced with 5-hole long pieces, the roof will close without a problem. I feel like this was definitely an oversight on LEGO's part, but it's an easy fix if you have spare pieces from other sets you can take from. If you don't, the biggest downside is that the roof won't fully close, which is far from a drawback. I've included a picture of the section I'm referring to and how the piece replacement now allows the roof to lay flat.
This model was a joy to build and I'm really quite amazed how much was packed in. Instead all of the panels are built with stud not on top pieces, and tiled. This gives an incredibly 'polished' finish with very few gaps. It does seem to use a disproportionate amount of technic connections and building, but, it's a Pop Top! I suffered none of the closure issues mentioned, just be sure to push the fabric in gently when closing.Other details I enjoyed - the fridge and whole kitchen unit is well designed. The rock'n'roll bed is more robust than in the T1. The engine bay cover works well to replicate the real sliding back mechanism - and all done with no gaps.I like the look of the final model. It's at a bigger scale to other creator expert models (like the price I guess) but for the functionality that's ok, and it has more than a passing resemblance for inspiring those romantic camper scenes by the beach.Downsides? I think the steering is an unnecessary complication which confuses the target audience of this model. As others point out, bits will fall off if it is played with too enthusiastically (as with most Creator Expert models) - so why add HOG steering? it's a display model for posing, not so much for pushing around. Removing the steering would have eliminated much of the technic/system brick interface and made the front end more robust. But as I say, that doesn't matter for display - despite what others have said you can pick it up and move all the doors/roof/boots without anything falling off.Secondly, Stickers. Not only that they were there at all, but the colour match wasn't good. They could have been transparent maybe, Lego?In summary: if you want a challenging, interesting Lego build which results in a very cool thing with some remarkable functions, buy the T2 camper.
This is a very frustrating build. I am not a novice builder however I have found this model incredibly frustrating. There are gaps and the model is very fragile, particularly the front, which does not stay together well at all. I have had to try and build the front section three times, but the elements do not not lock together securely enough. Once one part is fitted, another seems to fall off or come loose. I have had to restart three times and the model is still not completed. If I ever get it finished, it will have to be displayed very carefully as the slightest movement will result in something falling off - a very disappointing build experience.
