I had a pair of pretty good compacts to go along with my good pair of 8x40's and after reading many reviews decided to take the advice of putting my money into the best quality compacts I could find. The Leika Ultravids looked like a winner and they are. I need to travel light but always figured I had to accept poor optics in low light with compacts. The day I got these I went in my backyard when it was nearly too dark to see and looked at a mountainside about 1000 yards away. I have no doubt I would have seen a deer clearly if one was up there. I am amazed at the optics of these binoculars! Definitely not cheap but definitely worth every penny!

As you would expect from Leica and for the price, these have terrific optical quality. I keep them in my pocket for birding when I am out walking and do not want to carry full size bins. Obviously, 8x20 leaves you with a narrower field of view. The construction quality and weight are excellent. For the price, I expected a better case and strap, and covers for all openings (comes with covers for the eye pieces only), which accounts for the 1 star deduction.

Very compact and quick to deploy. Focus easily and quickly. Fit hands naturally for both my wife and myself. Very sturdy build. I gave 5 stars, because it's the best of the small packages. My wife felt the focusing ring is easier to reach than on the compact Ziess. Wish it had image stabilization. Right now image stabilized binoculars are much bigger, but when they become available in a small size, then stabilization makes a tremendous difference. (I also own a Canon 10X42 image stabilization binoculars, which I much prefer to the Ziess, Leica, or Swaroroski similar 10X binoculars because of the stabilzation.) Although color is not quite as good on the Canon. For carrying easily, the Leica is much lighter and smaller, and it performs well.
As a birder (retired) I have good optics: Leica binocs & scope. But until now it seemed that my binocs were always at home when I needed them. No longer. These 8x20s are with me when I go out ... on the deck, on a walk, in the car ... and always at the ready. My first surprise was at the brightness of the image. With only a 2.5mm exit pupil (compared to 6mm for my 7x42s) I did not expect a bright image. I am impressed each time I use them. Next surprise was the ability to focus up close ... I mean seven feet or so. My cat spots bees first & then I lock in on them. The clear image of a bee or butterfly just beyond reach is something I could never do with my birding binocs. & last I have to mention comfort. They are around my neck as I type this ... I chose the rubber coated binocs (VS leather) simply because I found them easier to hold. I tried both for a day or two and then returned the leather ones (although they were beautiful). They were great to let me try both & let my hands decide. Good folks to do business with.
I bought these specifically because the 10x42's were a little to large to carry with me on fly fishing trips and sporting events. The 8x20's are the perfect size to take with me and not even notice they are there until I need them. The first time I used them I actually laughed because the gorgeous optical clarity I am used to with Leica was there in full force and in such an incredibly tiny package! To be completely honest... I bought the leather version because these will also be my symphony optics. I can't wait to bring them along and be able to discreetly view fingering and keyboard work during performances. I have the Leica monocular but it makes me feel like a pirate when using it at the symphony or ballet. I realize Leica vs. Swarovski is a religious argument ... Also... the service and support I have received from SportOptics has been nothing short of perfection. I have bought every previous piece of Leica glass from either B&H or EuroOptics (both good companies) but SportOptics will be my first call from now on.

Extra clear, bright image edge to edge with great eye relief. I wear glasses and they are great for glasses. You can easily see the entire field while wearing glasses. The binoculars adjust for optimum usage by non-glasses wearers by extending the eyepiece tubes. They are delicate: mine suffered a drop from waist height onto concrete while inside the case. They were knocked out of alignment. However Leica repaired them free with no questions. Their repair service returned them in perfect condition packaged like a brand new pair. The case is kind of a tight fit -- not too easy to get them in and out. Nobody should expect to use 8x20 binoculars at night and these are no exception. Totally useless for stars or planets or terrestrial outdoor nighttime use. This should be no surprise with a small aperture. However performers on a well-lit stage looked just great.
I've owned these for several weeks now and I am very pleased with them. I owned a Leitz 8x20 until they were stolen on vacation, so I got the Ultravid 8x20 BA to replace them. These have enough eye relief (15mm) so you get a full view with eyeglasses on. They are also super bright, and the focus knob is larger than the older model. They are also waterproof. If you can afford them, I recommend purchasing. They have a lifetime warranty if you buy from an authorized Leica dealer. Be sure to call Leica first to verify if your dealer is legitimate. They come with a case, but it is too tight if you need quick access to them, so I use a cheap camera case from Walmart.
I have old Leica trinovid 8x40 and Zeiss 6x20, both excellent but large or not water resistant. I was concerned the Leica 8x20 would have too much shake to use comfortably. I tried to find high quality 6x20s that were water resistant but they were no longer available. . I wanted small “shirt pocket glass”. These binoculars are outstanding. Slightly better than the old Leica 8x40s. Super sharp, bright (except in dim light, as expected for 2.5 exit pupil). Shake is not a problem.
I compared these to the Trinovid 8x20, and they're very similar both in size and optical performance. The Trinovids had a slightly nicer diopter adjustment, were slightly clearer, and had an easier-to-use focusing knob. The Utravids are also slightly chunkier than the Trinovids, even though the dimensions are about the same. In the end I want for the Ultravids because the eye relief was slightly longer than the Trinovids (15mm vs 14mm) and worked well with my glasses. Overall an excellent little pair of binoculars for daytime use.
