A Great Tool for Finding Your Tone

This amp has a good selections of basic amp models and I like all but the high gain model. There are a wide selection of effects and reverb options and each is tweakable. I find myself experimenting with all of the different tones you can get from this amp and using effects I have not used much in the past. It is really entertaining. I think this amp excels in the cleaner tones and like most of the reviewers, I especially like the boutique model. There have been a lot of comparisons between this amp and the Katana amps. One disadvantage that reviewers point out is that you can only use one effect and reverb at a time. This isn't an issue for me because one effect is all I normally use. The power attenuator is a great feature to allow use at home without blasting everyone out of the house and the sound does't suffer at lower power settings. It also has direct out which I have used to feed into my PA. I believe this amp is rugged enough to take out to gigs. I highly recommend this amp and for the price, it's kind of a no brainer.

I really like this amp! The power settings are great for practice, noodling and blasting and think this is a very cool and unique feature on an amp. The overall sound is really good, although my tele can get to sounding really twangy, my strat sounds fat and big. The reason for the 4 starts is the issue with getting to effects. My amp doesn't always land me in effects for some reason. Since I mostly use pedals for the effects that I need it's not a big deal. Monkeying around with settings on stage is a pain so pedals are really are the best solution. Overall though, bang for the buck is high and would recommend this amp to anyone looking for light good sounding amp for various uses.

Unashamedly a competitor to the Boss Katana 50, but excels in a few key ways. The low/medium gain sounds are fantastic - the "boutique," "chime," "crunch," and "dynamic" models really are as good as many small 15-watt tube amps you could buy for twice the price - and this is about the size and volume as one, as well. The I&O is also excellent, with a full effects loop and cab-and-mic-simulated XLR direct out, two things the Katana 50 lacks. Where the Katana bests the Catalysts is in the very high-gain sounds (which have a slightly unnatural decay in the Catalyst). Great lower gain tone, articulation and value!
27 February 2023

I owned a katana and an orange crush 35RT and this is the best one for me. It is more than loud enough and is not as directional as other amps. I play mostly rhythm and edge of break up tones that this amp really excels in. The katana I feel is better for higher gain. This amp just feels much more responsive and organic for everything else. Guitar articulations are much more punchy and present and sound similar to the fender tube amp I compared it to at the store. Clean tones are very clean with tons of headroom. The crunch setting is what I tend to leave it on. It cleans up with a roll of the volume knob. The effects loop is very handy and transparent although it is before the modulation and reverb effects on the amp.The amp connects to my phone for any deeper ... MoreI owned a katana and an orange crush 35RT and this is the best one for me. I mainly just connect it to adjust the built in noise gate. The line out is a simulated output that sounds scary similar to an actual mic'd cab. I directly compared it with a mic and the difference was negligible. My only complaint is the line out is line level (not mic level) and is very hot. The channel volume must be turned down unless you have a gain control that can be cut.Overall I have found a winner in this amp. It feels like it very well made (much better than the Katana) and will last a long time and looks good too. I would not hesitate to buy it again. It's very versatile and an excellent value for the amazing sounds you get.

Just what the doctor ordered

After suffering a disabling back injury I needed an amp that was easier and lighter to move and set up than the tube amp combos I was used to playing through. I never cared much for the solid state amps as they could never duplicate the warmth a tube amp provided and was considering retiring from live performance altogether. Then I heard about the Catalyst series of amps and decided to try them out and was amazed! My bandmates were as well, telling me how much more clean and clear my sound was. Programming channels was a snap ( just follow the "cheat sheet on top of the amp and read the manual) and the manual button provides the familiarity of a regular amp, and at a third of the weight of my Blackstar 40 watt tube combo I can continue to perform without dealing ... MoreAfter suffering a disabling back injury I needed an amp that was easier and lighter to move and set up than the tube amp combos I was used to playing through. I was so impressed I went back to GC and got the 60 watt Catalyst as well for home and playing at open mic and jams. I couldn't be happier with these amps and am grateful for the help and guidance the folks at Guitar Center in Concord Ca. always provide.

Katana Killer
11 May 2022

This is the perfect amp series; Line 6 killed it when they made the Catalyst. The ability to practice quietly, .5 watt power, 30 watt power or 60 watt power all by turning a knob is great. The catalyst takes pedals be it individual pedals or a multi effects pedal, there is plenty of headroom and the speaker is able to keep up with ease. What sets it apart from the Katana is the Line 6 effects that are built in if you use Catalyst as a modeling amp. The speaker is clear and bright, not muddy or dull like Katana. Sure this is all subjective to what you like, but if you're looking for great sounds that won't fizzle out when you crank the amp and we'll rounded tones, Catalyst kills Katana in those areas. Oh, I almost forgot the catalyst app. Very easy to use compared to Katana. There are only two downsides but not a deal breaker by any means. The cable you need to connect catalyst to your computer/tablet/or phone is not offered when you purchase the amp and no foot switch to switch between banks or channels. You can easily buy the foot switch and the cable is dependent on what device you choose to use the app with so it makes sense Line 6 wouldn't supply it. All in all, Line 6, yet again takes the lead in amps and effects for solid state amplifiers.

Line 6 Catalyst 100 with Helix
19 September 2022

I've been a Helix user for over five years and other modelers prior to that primarily direct to FOH. It's been a few years since I've needed an amp for live performance. I play electric and acoustic guitar and mandolin, all served well by the Helix. In another band I had used a Fishman Loudbox for acoustic and mandolin. I was called called to fill in for a guitarist in a cover band, this group all used amps. After much research I decided to trade in the Loudbox for the Catalyst 100. I know the Catalyst is an entry level amp and tone options may not fit all needs. I have all I want built into the Helix, so using the power amp section of the Catalyst worked perfect for me. I found the 50 watt setting carried perfectly in this band with drums, bass, guitars and vocals. I believe this little amp gives a lot of bang for the buck. And there is plenty more for me to explore with it.

Not good for anything
11 February 2023

If you play fast or need good note separation, this is not the amp for you. Get a little tube amp instead. Taking mine back right now. Flubby Muddy Drone sound. General sound reproduction is awful. Effects are kind of cool. I wanted a portable light amp for writing music with friends and to spare the wear and tear on my tube amp. I'll probably go with a Marshall DSL5 or something like that instead and continue using a pedal board. I wouldn't Recommend it even for a beginner, you're not going to be able to have the clarity you need to develop basic skills. I'm playing through this with a strandberg Boden 7. Active Fishman's. Some of the clearest pickups on the market. Pure Mud on this amp.

Versatile modeler amp, easy to use with manual channel.
20 April 2022

This amp is versatile and easy to use stand-alone. It has a great selection of amp models built-in, along with enough effect and delays so that you can find something that you like fairly quickly. I like the clean and boutique models with some reverb. Then I played around with the other models, adjusting settings and effects. You can adjust everything on the amp, not necessary to connect a computer. I did find it confusing initially due to all the different methods required, i.e. "press a button", "press and hold", "press for 2 seconds", etc. That's why I read the manual a few times! So don't remove the amp-topper sheet and toss it in the box with the rest of the packing material :-). The best feature of the Catalyst amp is the manual channel. This is WYSIWYG. Adjust the knobs and controls just like a "regular"amp. You can then save the settings once you get something you like. In the future I will connect the amp to the computer and see what else you can do. Right now I am quite happy with the Catalyst amp and I highly recommend it. Go get one!

Very Good Sounding Amp - With some limitations
20 March 2022

Sound:As an amp, the overall sound quality is very good. It’s one of, if not the best modeling amps I’ve ever played. Each of the different amp models has a unique character and feel to it. They aren’t exact replicas of any particular amp, but you get the gist of what they were going for. The boosts are paired to the amps and for the most part seem to match up well. Be aware if you have single coils the boost on the high gain amp is going to require that built in noise gate… The effects are ok overall but nothing to write home about. The delays and verbs are nice just like in the HX, but the modulations are a little meh, and the pitch effects are mediocre at best.Features:For me, the most useful feature is the MIDI implementation. The delays and verbs are nice just like in the HX, but the modulations are a little meh, and the pitch effects are mediocre at best.Features:For me, the most useful feature is the MIDI implementation. Just about everything can be controlled via MIDI CC and it opens the amp to 12 presets. I also appreciate the top panel controls. You can adjust most features right from there. For the least useful award it has to be the effects. As I said they are not horrible, just OK, but the limitations of their use and placement requires a pedalboard to get all the tones I need.Ease of Use:This is where this thing shines. Turn it on, adjust a few knobs to your taste and away you go. Tweaking on the panel is quick and easy. I’ve loaded the software up and played around with it some, but unlike the Katana you don’t really need to deep dive software on this amp to make is sound great.Quality:I’d say it’s about what you would expect at this price point. It’s well constructed and feels solid, but I can imagine it will get dinged up easily just like the Powercab does since it appears to be made from the same materials. But I’d rather have a great sounding amp that’s prone to scuffs and marks than pay an extra $150 for better TolexValue:I think $399 as of this writing is a more than fair price for the amp you are getting. There’s a lot of sonic bang for the buck. It doesn’t have all the effects of most other modelers but the amp models alone make it worth the price IMHO.Manufacturer Support:I’ve owned Line 6 products going back to the POD 2.0 but I’ve never had a reason to reach out to them directly. They have a great user forum with a lot of helpful and smart people that have steered me in the right direction more than once. The Wow Factor:It’s an amp that can easily replace a tube amp in most situations. At 32 pounds you get Vox, Marshall, Fender, and scorched earth gain at the flip of a switch.Overall:Please do some research and be informed ahead of buying this amp so you are not disappointed. I’ll get this out of the way. This is not a Katana killer. The Katana is an all in one. The Catalyst is a great modeling amp but it lacks the full complement of effects to make it a true all in one for most people. Read on and I’ll explain.I use a Helix as my main gig rig and I keep a Marshall DSL and a Katana 100 around for those times I want to use a combo, or there’s no PA for the Helix. The Katana has spent most of the last 2 years as a backup, I never really bonded with the high gain. I love the Marshall but I’m getting older and lugging that thing around is becoming a chore. I wanted to give the Catalyst a try to see if it could be a legitimate replacement for the DSL. So far, it’s proven worthy of the task. I enjoy this amp quite a bit but it’s not without its drawbacks and design decisions that leave me scratching my head…. On the positive side, the amp models sound nice and are responsive for a modeler. It’s lightweight and easy to move around and it’s loud enough to jam/gig with no problem. MIDI is a huge plus and to get the most out of it you really need some form of MIDI foot controller. I use it with an HX Effects so I have all my time-based effects in the loop and can engage the boosts and change amps/parameters via MIDI. I haven’t tried it with traditional analog drives yet, but from what I’ve seen on the YouTubes it takes them well. The negatives are few but could be dealbreakers for some. First and foremost, I can’t for the life of me figure out what they were thinking when it comes to the effects. Reverb can be on all the time, but you can only run the delay OR the modulation OR the pitch at one time, not together. Modulation without Delay? That’s borderline blasphemous! If you have a pedalboard or multi-effects it’s a non-issue, but it keeps the amp from being a true all in one solution for stage or studio. Another ding is it lacks is a footswitch, but any standard 2 button TRS style switch that most of us already have lying around works fine, and if you are using MIDI it is not needed at all. Lastly, the amp selector switch. I see no practical reason to illuminated an area of a circle to indicate which amp you are using because…..you guessed it, you can’t see it in the sunlight lol! A simple arrow on the knob would suffice or at least use a color besides white… SMH. Having said all of that, I still like this amp quite a bit and it will be replacing my DSL as my go to combo. It’s got great sounds and with MIDI it can be an incredibly versatile amp that can cover just about any musical territory. I’m very happy with my purchase. If you are interested in this amp by all means check it out, I don’t think you will be disappointed as long as you know what you are getting. And if you don’t like it, the great folks at zZounds gladly take returns so what do you have to lose?
