If I’d wanted something more sophisticated that’s exactly what I’d have bought.If you want an up to the minute unit which painstakingly replicates vintage delay effects then look elsewhere, however if like me you require a relatively inexpensive delay which can produce some quite unusual sounds of its own and is fun to use, then the DL-4 is still relevant.It’s as well to be aware that any expression pedal used with the DL-4 needs to have its potentiometer connected so that the resistance varies between tip and sleeve of the connecting cable. A TRS pedal/cable won’t work.I'm giving 4 stars because of the unit's slight limitations but I was aware of all of them before buying and therefore personally have no complaints.

But I have to knock it for it's durablility. I have had a Ibanez DE7 echo/delay for 3 years and I have had not a single problem with it. All the features are not worth this repeated crap out. I don't think I'm going to get much closer sonically and simply put, I love this pedal. It can re-create pretty much any delay sound I want including my coveted tape delay sound, without worrying if my tape unit made the journey safely. It's durable, the switches are smooth and the unit is big enough to adequately see the controls when playing live. If you write songs, this has the power to inspire some really creative ideas.There is one legitimate con, which is that it takes up a lot of pedal board space. The unit does sound a bit processed at times and not as natural, but I like that, so if you are a purist, you may find this a problem. Also, if you need exact setting references, there are no LED read outs to guide you (like the new Vox delay, which also sounds more transparent). I've tried the new Vox unit (big Vox fan one of my favorite amps), but, for a delay effect, I am looking for that smooth reliable sound, giving up on the tape benefits live and in certain studio situations.This unit needs a lot of time to play with and I suggest that you read the manual first like other Line 6 products to really get a full idea of the unit's potential. All in all, this is now the best non-tape delay unit that I own.

I bought my first Line 6 Delay in 2003. I have played it for thousands of gigs, on top of hours and hours of home and studio use. At live performances, I mainly use the pedal to loop acoustic guitar. Some people may be turned off by the 15 seconds of loop, but all you need to do is start looping with your 1/2 tempo button on, which doubles your loop to around 30 secs.I've used the line 6 for some studio recording, including looping and harmonizing some electric E-bow parts. I recorded them backwards onto the pedal, then used the Reverse feature. It was an easy fix... all you needed was a new switch, screwdriver, wrench, and about 30 mins.This pedal is a must-have, and I recommend trying it out and playing with all of its features before buying a DL-20...hated it!
Legacy but legendary. Great for live performance. I have a Line 6 POD HD400 will all DL4 functions inside, however limited capability for live twicking. POD's looper is basic and useless, DL4's looper allows reverse and 1/5 speed. Very creative instrument.
Footswitch (buttons) unreliable. Possibly just needs a good service.I’m disappointed for the price I paid for the effects pedal . I bought the same model about 10 years ago and gave it to a friend, it’s still working perfectly.

The fact that I've had 3 of these, this is the 4th. This time it's for keeps. Absolutely beautiful sounds come this wee beastie. I love the fact it can't be programmed as such - it's more a case of dial in the sounds n then save to one of the 3 switches on offer. The fact that the edge, of U2, has at least a couple of the rack mount versions - called the echo pro - and that companies like TC Electronics styled their flashback 4 after it (obviously and that's not a negative critique) means it's a classic pedal. I'm going to grab an expression pedal, hook up to stereo in and outs and see what I can come up with tied into a quadraverb GT, Boss DD7 and a few amps. Should be lots of fun.
Well, the pedal is actually pretty decent sounding, has plenty of good effects but there is very great chance it wont last. I've owned two of these DL4s. First one actually lasted me about 7 months then stared acting up. Decided I would order a new one and the presaves wouldn't save at all. I'm tapping out on line 6 products and I suggest you should as well. This product is not worth the hassle. You can find more reliable delays out there. I'm most definitely done getting scammed by line 6. If we quit buying there products then maybe they will actually try improving them.
