100 % USA skillet commemorating the Buffalo Nickel or 'North American bison' give me a nostalgic feel for the western wild west, rugged out back of our founding fathers.I don't cook over a campfire anymore but I do love to cook with my cast iron skillets bake/stove top. This is one of my first two Lodge pans, and I could not be more pleased. I've had others I inherited or found at a thrift store, a couple of those were good pans; and some other brands I actually purchased new. No comparison. This arrived flat and still is. The changes in thickness in the bottom of this one don't affect the performance at all and it's the bottom so there's really no cleaning issue. I haven't struggled with the pre-seasoning like I did with another manufacturer - this was great right off the bat with a bit of oil and has been since. I look forward to cooking with it now because I still know what cast iron can do for food and I know this cleanup will be easy. Looks cool hanging on the rack too ;)

I am a huge lover of cast iron cookware , having over 50 skillets in my collection, a majority of them being lodge! You always know your getting a piece of history and quality with lodge cookware! I've never had any issues with any pieces of my lodge cookware ! This is a collectors skillet that I've been dying for since before Christmas! They only have a limited run of these so I had to get my hands on one ! It cooks like any other lodge skillet, superb!!!! If you haven't made the switch from Teflon to cast iron, do it now! Cast iron is just as easy to clean and keep seasoned as Teflon. You will never get a better sear ! I will never have to replace my cookware unless it breaks! Saves me so much money! This is a beautiful piece!

Who doesn't love Lodge cookware? The helper handle opposite the long handle is more important than you might think. Once you have a pan full of cooked food, it's pretty heavy and you need that extra little handle to safely lift your hot pan. This cast iron pan is a lifelong investment and will truly last forever if you take care of it. I've gone through so many nonstick pans that eventually can't be used because the surface gets scratched, nicked, and wears of. But you'll never have that problem with a good cast iron pan like this one. I like that it's nice and heavy and I can stir food around without the pan sliding around on the stove. The fact that it's heavy makes it harder to handle when you're washing it so that's something to consider.
I'll get the negative out of the way first. Wal-Mart doesn't know anything about packing cast iron or doesn't care. I followed other reviewers recommendations of having the cast iron purchases shipped to the nearest store & checking for damage in front of the Wal-Mart employee. This was easy because the employee opened the box without even asking so we could check. (Good thing I didn't order slinky underwear.) The box contained two purchases, a Lodge Mini Cakes Pan & the Lodge Buffalo Nickel pan. Neither were in individual boxes. Both were bare metal against metal, the mini cakes pan sitting in the Buffalo Nickel pan. The Buffalo Nickel pan is scratched up on the cooking surface from the contact. They didn't even bother to put stuffing, or paper, or bubble wrap, etc ... MoreI'll get the negative out of the way first. Wal-Mart doesn't know anything about packing cast iron or doesn't care. They didn't even bother to put stuffing, or paper, or bubble wrap, etc between the two pans. Who does that? It just shows a lack of giving a flip. Anyway, there was a useless small strip of air filled plastic stuck above the pans in a too large box. Walmart.com you should work on this. Very easy solution. I went ahead and accepted the two pans because I didn't want a hassle & have another Buffalo Nickel pan sent poorly packaged. It would mess with my blood pressure. Fortunately the pans were not cracked that I can see & the handle still attached to the Buffalo Nickel pan. One good note, Wal-Mart shipped the pans three days early, although I'd rather the time saved be used on packaging properly.Okay, on to the positive :Both pans are great, I'll focus on the Buffalo Nickel (BN) pan though. As soon as I saw the BN pan I wanted one. I love cast iron. I have gift cards saved for years for fun stuff for Wal-Mart & Amazon. I read about the shipping issues with Wal-Mart so tried Amazon. Amazon doesn't carry either pan right now but they can be ordered through other providers at a higher cost. I decided to go with Wal-Mart. The BN pan is beautiful. I love it. I will likely just use it occasionally but mainly hang it on the wall for decoration. I've thought about putting it upside down on a grill & heating them both up. Then try cooking pancakes with Buffalo imprints for the kids in the family. I have no clue how they will turn out. Probably would take some practice & seasoning build up to pull this off well. It would make a 7.5 inch pancake if you used the smoke ring as a batter border. Like I said, it would take practice since that's not the intended purpose for the design. I'll try it and post back in several months.I'm pleased with Lodge's Buffalo Nickel pan.
I love this pan because of the nostalgic Buffalo Nickel design. I'm not a particularly skilled cast iron cooker but I have tried it a little and read about it a bunch. I previously had a crappy set of made in China cast iron that got all rusty and I tried to rehab one of those pans. It was a pain and the moral of the story is don't let your cast iron get real rusty, keep it well oiled. When I saw this pan for less than $20 I decided it was time to get some Made in America cast iron and cook with a quality product. It comes pre-seasoned so you do not have to do the heavy work. All you have to do after use is clean it (no soap!), re-oil, and I usually pop it in the oven to make sure it totally dries. My husband told me I couldn't use cast iron on our glass cooktop ... MoreI love this pan because of the nostalgic Buffalo Nickel design. Then I discovered that the Lodge "lab" cooks with cast iron on their glasstop stove everyday. Then my husband said well I couldn't use this particular skillet on the glass top because of the relief on the bottom. I'm glad I ignored him and ordered it anyway. I'm successfully using this skillet. I like the design so much this will become a family heirloom if any of the kids like cast iron cooking!
Wow! That is a STURDY skillet...lived up to the advertising for sure! But, the engraving on the bottom of the cast-iron is what got my attention. I have a huge buffalo collection, and having a "skillet" with the buffalo nickel engraved on the bottom to add to my display is so unexpected that it works beautifully. I'll USE the skillet, but until then I have it hanging on the wall next to my buffalo collection display case. It is just an incredible piece to bring attention to my beloved display!!! Walmart always under promises and over-delivers!!! Thank you Walmart for everything I've shopped for, Marsha/Oklahoma
Lodge makes great sturdy cookware that holds a lot of heat and transfers it to food well, the texture on the pan made it possible to pre-season, saving the consumer the trouble and saving the last major American cast iron cookware manufacturer from ruin; they are now thriving and expanding. The grainy texture will take seasoning very well and become very smooth over time, with use. Browning is superior. It is heavy. Low to Medium is all you need for cooking, preheat well also, and use oil. Can go between stove top (any) and oven with no problems. You may want a handle cover, nylon scraper, brush, stainless scrubber, and some great oven mitts (welding gloves are fantastic), and spray canola to go with it. Keep dry when not in use, recommended to fully dry on stove ... MoreLodge makes great sturdy cookware that holds a lot of heat and transfers it to food well, the texture on the pan made it possible to pre-season, saving the consumer the trouble and saving the last major American cast iron cookware manufacturer from ruin; they are now thriving and expanding. Keep dry when not in use, recommended to fully dry on stove top after washing, can coat with very thin coat of oil for storage. You can cook an egg just fine on a factory seasoned Lodge following the above suggestions. You can also heat it as hot as you want for searing, I find it better not to go so hot you evaporate all of the oil, so that you can brown in the texture of the meat too. Can use on a grill or camp fire just fine. Lodge cookware will improve over time with use, go ahead and use a stainless steel spatula, both will last indefinitely! The buffalo nickel is a very nice backing, it is at a very attractive price and will sell on ebay for much more in the future. There is a lot of myth out there about cast iron unfortunately, it really isn't difficult to use. You will get superior results in extremely affordable cookware using good technique!
First I like the buffalo nickel bottom. And the non stick Pan is pretty good, right out of the box... Easy to clean and take care of. I am Very Happy with it. Cooking on iron is a different ball game. The 10.25" pan size for me is right. Cooks food better then a stainless steel pan does, and somehow taste better. The more you use the pan, the better it gets. (less sticky)I rated this item five stars.... I think it's a good product.... Made in the USA.
what can i say after using cast iron? its pros: it can be scratched, it can be heated to maximum temperatures, it can be used to bake food in the oven. its cons: it is heavy, the handle cannot be taken with a bare hand, it cannot be washed in a dishwasher, it RUSTS, which means that food cannot be left in it after cooking, it cannot be placed on a wet surface, it must be wiped with a paper towel or warmed up so that it dries itself, you can’t pour water into it so burnt food gets wet and yes, food BURNES to it very often. So I would advice to have few frying pans - non-stick and cast iron if you need to cook something on high heat
