I installed this model as a bow graph one week ago on my new boat. There is a factory mounted Hook 5X mounted on the dash and I should have purchased the old 5X model for the bow.Dislikes - You cannot split the screen on the Hook2 5X model.I can't find a way to change the data information to a larger font size.Hard to read data information when standing.Screen blacks out almost completely in bright sunlight.Likes - Easy to setup and use.Sonar and down scan images are sharp and clear.Considering removing and replacing it with a larger model that splits the screen. Hopefully, one that uses the same transducer because it was a chore routing it from the transom to the bow.

Disappointed in this item. You get what you pay for I guess.

Very Plain Jane unit, very few options. Has GPS, but can't show maps, only lines and routs. Can't control/ change, color on screen. Picture on screen is very poor. Box and advertisement shows different than what you actually get. Easy to install and use, because it doesn't do much. I would not buy if I had it to do over. Good Luck!

Thought an upgrade to the Bottom Scan would be nice. No manual included need to download along with many blank pages. First disappointment was DS mode was blue screen only and there were no depth readings on right side as in catalog picture, misleading for sure! Missed an hour of a super nice day on the lake fooling this thing. Finally got the simulation turned off and the depth, temp. and speed icons worked. Sonar was vertical lines and Down Scan was blue blob. Lowrance wasn't much help until I finally spoke to a nice lady that spoke English without accent. Figured the unit was bad. Thought I had it adjusted but similar results the next time on water. Removed, repacked and returned to local Cabelia's for refund. Found a NIB X96 for replacement, I know how it works ... MoreThought an upgrade to the Bottom Scan would be nice. No manual included need to download along with many blank pages. Easy to use, in budget but not good enough
14 March 2018

I bought Hook2 5 splitshot a month ago and thought it could do split view. I was wrong about that. I use this unit on kayak so the screen looks massive compare to 4" screen but unable to view both 2D and down imaging on split screen was biggest downfall. To flip over to different mod you have to press button but since I don't use GPS, I have to press button twice to view down imaging from 2D and imaging starts all over again. I have to wait few seconds before I can see anything on screen.Only if you can customize screen view so you can have split view, if would be a fantastic unit. I wish if I have bought old Hook 4x or Hook 5X.

Great Product, Excellent Pricing.

I bought the Hook2 5X to replace the bow mounted fishfinder on my bass boat. Installation was easy and the unit is "plug and play" just as advertsied. The controls are similar to the HDS I have at the console with the exception being this unit is not touch screen. So far it seems to be working well. I did have one incident where the screen went dark. I found it had switched to "night" mode. Possibly my fault just not sure. The screen image is very clear and I also like having the down imaging at the bow.

Great budget sounder, sonar and GPS.

I bought the Lowrance Hook2 X5 a couple of month ago and just recently mounted it on my kayak. On the plus side the screen is full daylight viewable even with sunnies on although the angle need to be considered for reflection. It is simple to operate with single button toggle screens, it was simple to install although I had to buy a RAM mount to fit it in the kayak. The power of the transducer did not appear to be affected by going through the hull. Sonar gives a nice image of the bottom structure. On the minus side, if you are in water depth close to 3 metres the echo toggles from 3 to 6 and back to 3 meter range causing a range of 10mm wide echos, though you can bypass auto and set the range. The sonar does not work well in < 3m depth, probably not usually a ... MoreI bought the Lowrance Hook2 X5 a couple of month ago and just recently mounted it on my kayak. Selecting different options in the menu is not intuitive as there is no enter button and it is not clear if a function has been selected.I would recommend this for a budget sounder for the smaller in shore craft.

It's an ok product

The unit is very basic. It has limited discretion of objects on the bottom. It picks up a lot of surface clutter even when anchored. It also keeps giving me a shallow depth alarm when I am moving at 15 mph in 80 foot water. It also losses the bottom when anchored. This unit also does not support maps so you get nice little lines on a blank screen for the GPS function. This unit has not lived up to my expectations.

Nice to start with but only lasted 1 month
6 September 2019

I like the unit pretty well. Mounted easily in my kayak graphics were good. I used it about 6 times over the course of 2 months. On the last trip it started freezing up and cutting itself off. Acted like maybe it had a short in the system. Other reviews I have read also had issues with the longevity of the unit. So overall, I do not recommend. I will purchase a different one.

Not Impressed

I bought the Hook 2 5X Split Shot to replace an old model on the bow of my bass boat. I did not need navigation as I have an HDS at the console. Mounting was easy and all the necessary hardware was included with the exception of wire ties. At first the screen display looked very similar to my HDS as far as clarity and detail. After a few times out the screen began to load up with what looks like fish id marking from bottom to surface. I cannot clear these from the screen. I contacted Lowrance and they provided very little help and insisting I had the unit in "demo". I assured them the unit had been working previously and was not in demo mode. They said there was nothing they could do for me. So much for customer support. Maybe they haven't worked all the bugs out of it yet.

I have used it twice. I am about to take it to the pawn shop and see what they will give me for it. A total waste of money. Poor screen image. It does not have the depths marked on the right side of the screen like my other unit. The picture on the box indicates it has that feature. You will need to guess at the depth of a fish. Again the screen image really is poor. If you use the fish ID function with depth the screen is cluttered and almost impossible to read.
