I like everything about this machine. The weight, balance, and performance are outstanding. I had to return it after one days use because the switch became almost impossible to turn it on. I exchanged it for another identical machine and after two days the switch is starting to fail. I might have to return it in the near future.

This paddle switch grinder is a step up from the cheap ones you will find at places like Home Depot. It has enough power and is easy to use. Our company goes through a lot of grinders, as we work on concrete only where they take a beating and suffer under the conditions. This grinder is better than most, while affordably priced. The metal case is cool, too.On a side note, DO NOT buy any equipment here from "CPO Makita", as they are nothing but a bunch of crooked re-sellers pushing defective equipment that they refuse to return or replace. Buyer beware - they stole from me with no remorse whatsoever, and they managed to keep my feedback off the web page, thus this oddly placed warning! Please be careful. I've never had a problem with items purchased directly from ... MoreThis paddle switch grinder is a step up from the cheap ones you will find at places like Home Depot. I'm reviewing the Makita 7.5 amp corded 4.5 in. Angle Grinder with wheels and case.PROS:LightweightPowerfulExcellent for sharpening large garden toolsCONS:Tightening the wheel with just 2 hands is difficult. I put my grinder in a vice with just enough pressure to hold the grinder while I tightened the wheel. The handle must be unscrewed before the grinder will fit back in the case. I hope repeated screwing and unscrewing of the handle does not wear out the connection.WARNING:If you have never owned an angle grinder realize it is a very dangerous tool. I purchased this Makita angle grinder from my local Home Depot last February. I could have gotten it cheaper on Amazon so that was a mistake, but that’s what I get for not doing my homework. I work as a framer/remodel carpenter so I use the Makita at work, but it doesn’t get used heavily. I have also used it while working on my trucks rusty exhaust system. I’m coming up on a year of ownership and I have no serious complaints with this grinder. The only thing I’ve wondered about is how safe it is to have the paddle switch be roughly the same size as the tools handle. It’s not as easy as it should be to release the trigger while maintaining a positive grip on the tool. With that said, I still have all my fingers so I’m not too concerned lol. I would definitely ... MoreI purchased this Makita angle grinder from my local Home Depot last February. I would definitely recommend this grinder. Makita and quality go hand in hand in my experience.
I let it run for 2 minutes with no disk attached to make sure it worked properly when I got it. After the two minutes the gear box was hot to the touch, and the gear sound was not normal. A lack of gear lubrication is usually the cause of both symptoms. I opened up the gear head and found both bevel gears had absolutely no grease on them. I lubricated the gears. It now runs cool, and the sound is normal for a healthy angle grinder. What happened Makita? You all used to make great products…
The switch on this grinder jams up after several hours of use. Possibly due to dust collecting there. I exchanged the first one and the replacement did the same thing. It’s hard to turn off. Then it becomes impossible to turn on despite brushing it out with a toothbrush. Go with a trigger or paddle switch. This model is useless.
This review is based on inspection (unpowered) of two Makita 9557PBX1 kits. Both kits were returned after concluding that issues found could not be resolved by Home Essentials Direct or the manufacturer. PRO: Reasonable amps & rotational speed (7.5A/11000 rpm) for DIY projects; comfortable grip -- lightweight & small diameter barrel; large paddle switch increases safety; not limited by battery life of cordless models; kit includes all the essential items required to start use immediately. CON: Continuous operation feature not reliable as the 'lock-on' switch is easily overridden with the slightest pressure on the paddle switch. CON: Continuous operation feature not reliable as the 'lock-on' switch is easily overridden with the slightest pressure on the paddle switch. 'From the Mfr' description on the Home Essentials Direct website is misleading -- wheel guards are not 'tool-less' & there is no AC/DC option switch. The hand covers half of exhaust vents -- concerns (unverified) regarding overheating the grinder during continuous usage. Home Essentials Direct sent a replacement PBX1 kit, but both kits were returned after inspection revealed that identical issues existed with both kits (unreliable lock-on switch; misleading claims regarding tool-less wheel guards). I will consider other grinders, but may return to this Makita 9557PB grinder, as none of the online test reviews of this grinder view my concerns as critical
I work in the automotive restoration industry. I use an angle grinder to smooth welds, grind off paint and rust, cut metal, and I use it hard. I have owned grinders from just about every manufacturer that you can think of, from cheap to expensive. In a word, this Makita angle grinder is AMAZING. The balance is very good. There is zero vibration when you press the button. The switch is in a very comfortable place to depress. The grinder is very powerful, and doesn't get hot, like other grinders do. The air/cooling vents were located in a location that isn't covered up by your hand while using this Makita grinder. This grinder comes with a foam lined metal case, that I'm not going to throw away like I always do with the cheap plastic cases that usually comes with ... MoreI work in the automotive restoration industry. I will be buying another, just in case something in the industry changes, and this same model becomes unavailable.
I cut both flat stock to 1" thick and bicycle tubing with my grinders. After burning out a B&D 2750 that I loved, (plus a couple of Harbor Freights that were rougher), this is a very nice grinder. It is super smooth, much better than my Metabo Hitachi HPT G12SQ2M, and I think it's because it has spiral gears instead of the straight cut gears. When I cut bicycle tubing to length, this is the grinder to use. I've just bought a Bosch GWS10-45PE that also has spiral gears, and while it isn't quite as vibration free, it is noticeably smaller diameter and easier to hold, which is much better for making precise cuts. Only time will tell if the Makita or the Bosch works out better for my work. However either one is better than the Metabo, B&D, and the Harbor Freight ... MoreI cut both flat stock to 1" thick and bicycle tubing with my grinders. (I do have some Milwaukee tools I like too, but I thought their angle grinder was overpriced for what it offered.)
I use this tool daily. The quality is there, however the design could use some improvements. The paddle switch doesnt like to stay locked in the "on" position which requires me to frequently reposition the grinder. This thing really takes a beating though and keeps working as intended; if I had to guess, I put it through 3 or 4 hours of use a day, all day. Normally an angle grinder only works at that pace for about two weeks before it gives up. This one has shown no signs of slowing down.
