Brilliant little saw. I've been running a Husqvarna rancher for many years cutting firewood for our wood-burners and doing other country jobs. This Makita is so quiet by comparison, I know they recommend ear defenders but you can really manage without. Also it's a little over half the weight of the husky so far less strain on my ageing back. I bought a pair of 6AH rechargeable batteries to go with it and they last about half an hour on a charge, that's cutting fresh hardwood logs between 2" and 12" diameter. Great tool and at only just over £200 without the batteries a great buy.

Great saw, very comfortable to use. Batteries last about 30 mins of use but have lots of batteries so wasn’t a problem. Only had one session so early days but suspect keeping the chain sharp will be key. FFX were great, super fast delivery as always.

I’ve been a professional gardener and landscaper for my entire working career and have used many brands of chainsaw. This machine is well built and has a surprising amount of power but has one major downfall in that the chain comes off the bar while use during tree work. There’s a design flaw meaning it’s very easily dislodged by lateral movement which is inevitable when cutting small diameter branches. This is incredibly annoying and adds time to my working day. The takeaway is that if you’re cutting felled timber into smaller sections, or large diameter manufactured timber for construction the machine will work well, if you’re using it for tree work then it’s not suitable. Pity as makita is generally excellent

After being impressed with these new age battery powered tools (impact wrenches without a compressor wohooo!!) I decided to try a battery powered chainsaw from my chosen manufacturer. My usercase is typical homeowner use. Felling and bucking 5-10 trees yearly for firewood etc. I was pleasantly surprised of the power and torque that this thing has. Be aware however that this thing uses up batteries like nothing else I have ever tried. Better to have ca. 4 6Ah batteries for for contionous workflow charging the extra pair simultaneously. I'm especially pleased to not have that 2-stroke odour hanging around me for the rest of the day. My ears got a rest for the buzzaw whining and no shaky hands after a day of logging. Refuel from the wall outlet all the way. No mixing ... MoreAfter being impressed with these new age battery powered tools (impact wrenches without a compressor wohooo!!) Refuel from the wall outlet all the way. No mixing gas anymore. No extra trips to get more gas and 2-stroke oil when you run out. Just the bar oil and a good chain file. No going back to gas powered saws for me. I'm sure that pro guys still need their gas saws. I'm glad I don't.
Bought this as a "chain bow-saw" due to shoulder injury. With batteries installed, still lighter than a small petrol chainsaw. Battery life was adequate for most jobs and has enough torque to chew through very large and stodgy wood (at a cost of batttery life), but clearly not suitable for cutting down or logging large trees. Chain guide has a habit of coming a little slack with prolonged use (or maybe I am wary of overtightening it). Unit does not come with enough chain oil to fill the reservoir. Overall happy with it - does what I need of it. I cannot comment on long-term ownership gripes yet....
This is my first battery-powered chainsaw and I'm very impressed with the performance. I previously owned a mains 30cm chainsaw but it was long in the tooth and difficult to adjust. The Makita DUC405Z is a pleasure to use and cuts through green wood like butter. The automatic chain oiling system should ensure that the chain lasts a long time. The chainsaw is well balanced and has a good set of safety features. I'm planning to tackle a couple of large conifers in the next two weeks and I feel confident that the DUC405Z will take these jobs in its stride. I'm using 2 x 5.0mAh batteries and have yet to see them drop to 50% capacity.
I bought the Makita cordless chainsaw to replace my two stroke Stihl. Two main reasons - the first is that with the petrol saw there is so much faffing about every time I want to use it. This includes replacing the chain oil that has leaked everywhere, checking the exactitude of the two stroke mix and holding my breath when i pull the cord to start it in the hope that the plug doesn't need cleaning or replacing or something else I don't know about. The second reason is that I have a number of Makita cordless tools and have been exceptionally impressed by their performance.I also have collected several 18V x 5AMP batteries. The chain saw is fantastic. It took me a couple of hours to do all the work I've been putting off since the winter. This involved one change of batteries.I have to say that this Makita cordless chain saw is powerful enough to do anything I'm likely demand of it. We have a two acre field with two thirds of it a small woodland and the saw will fell and cut wood up to 45cm in diameter. There's no messing about with this machine - just plug in two batteries and go!
This thing is fantastic, ive been regularly cutting 18/20 inch logs and it just eats through the wood. The batteries last about 20/30 mins of cutting, enough to fill a small trailer. I have 3 sets of batteries and thats enough to get a full haul.
Seems to be reasonably well made, compares well with all the other Makita gear I have. However, it does not perform as well as a petrol or mains powered chain saws. Do not expect to 'wellie' it through a tree trunk. Comparison between a run or a walk in the park - this is definitely a walk. Adequate for the odd small job that does not warrant getting the petrol one out and is too far from a power point.
After 4 months my saw has stopped working. It is not the switch but the whole electric unit has faulted. Need to spend money on a brand new one or spend 140 on a new electrical unit for the chainsaw. Not the greatest at all. I was expecting better from this brand and only using once a week to cut 4 or 5 logs in half for basic fire wood. Says it all.
