So I got this for my trip to the West Coast of the US. My main tripod I use at home is the manfrotto 055 which is much larger in all regards. I purchased this for its light weight and ease of use with the ball head and twist locks. This tripod gets 5 stars because I can't think of any downsides. Sure it may not be the tallest tripod, but its for traveling... it's SUPPOSED to be smaller. Hiking with it was great and setup doesn't take all that long. The ballhead is plenty strong and easy to use/understand.

This is a great tripod without the twist locks. There’s another version with clips that works better. Sand always gets stuck in this one And I always forget to tighten them enough and it starts to lean or fall over. Not great for speedy setup! This is my third tripod like this — they are great except those twists. Ordered this one by accident. Get the other one!!!!

I purchased this after chatting with a B&H sales professional for an upcoming trip. Wanted to go for a relatively smaller and lighter but still sturdy tripod. Based on that criteria it did the job. It is easy to pack and not a burden to carry while walking. That said, if you are serious about photography, this tripod should not be your reference item as it is not sturdy enough to withhold strong wind or other extreme environmental conditions. This doesn't make it a bad tripod, just a good travel one.I knocked off one star as I wasn't a big fan off the twist locks and there are some other compromises to make it smaller and lighter. It is a product I can recommend.

I normally use a Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 tripod while photographing waterfalls and landscapes. I'm going to be traveling this Fall and need a smaller, lighter tripod for the trip. The Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tripod with 494 Ball Head was a natural complement. Especially since the ball head uses the 200PL QR plates that are affixed to my camera body and supertelephoto lens. The MT055XPRO3 has always felt heavy when attached to my camera backpack. This is okay for short hikes. But, it does get uncomfortable on longer ones. When I strapped the Manfrotto Befree onto the backpack for a recent outing, I couldn't even feel it. I now have a travel and long trail hike tripod that I can enjoy. The Manfrotto Befree is a compromise. One that I'm happy to live with. It isn't as sturdy as the MT055XPRO3. I didn't expect it to be. But, it did seem to handle the job of holding my camera steady while shooting long exposures of waterfalls. The one short coming is that the ball head is small for fastening the QR Plate. It didn't seem as secure as the Manfrotto X-PRO 3-Way Head that I use on the larger tripod. It did seem to do the job. I'll just have to be a little extra careful.I'm glad to have a lighter alternative for when I need it.
Purchased this unit specifically for supporting a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 150-600 super telephoto lens (not the heavier sport model). Overall it is sturdy and does support the camera and lens without any apparent instabilities. Given the weight of this lens cantilevered off the center of the tripod it works well so far and I am scoring it a 4 out of 5 only because I dont have enough time behind it to see how the clamp details hold up over time. One item that I noticed right away is that with the camera and lens mounted it is hard to adjust the camera position. Not a deal killer but would be nice if the stand had a fine adjustment for up/down/left/right because once you position the camera and tighten it sags a bit finding its final position and there is no way to ... Not a deal killer but would be nice if the stand had a fine adjustment for up/down/left/right because once you position the camera and tighten it sags a bit finding its final position and there is no way to adjust the lens direction without loosening and then re-tightening.I also find the camera mount plate the locks into the head of the tripod to be difficult to insert and know that it is locked. I am super careful because if that isnt locked in place the camera and lens come crashing down so an easier/better design on this lock plate is needed.
I was looking for a good travel tripod that would integrate well with my other gear -- which is all arca-swiss compatible. Despite the listing stating that it was arca-swiss compatible, it wasn't really two-way.Technically, yes, the plate that comes with this tripod head will fit on other arca swiss heads. But the reverse is not true. The head will not accept other arca swiss plates. It is pretty much a proprietary head/plate that doesn't play nicely with others. The tripod itself seems decent, but the lack of compatibility was disappointing.
Purchased this tripod to have a smaller lighter option to travel with and I love it. Small enough and light enough to fit in my luggage without going over the weight limit. It is easy to carry and quick to set up. Offers a good stable platform even for my 5D III even more so for a lighter mirrorless camera. I swapped out the quick release plate to a sunwayfoto Arca Swiss style to use the Sunwayfoto L bracket and it made for the perfect combination. Just what I was looking for.
The important components of the tripod are made of cheap plastic. The tripod head is comprised of plastic, including all the knobs. I would recommend a different tripod. This is not worth the money.
Was looking for for a travel tripod, sturdier than the Benro I have now that I'm shooting mostly MF. This tripod has four leg segments as opposed to five and thus the tubing is a greater diameter and it seems more stable as a result. My biggest disappointment is the lack of Arca compatible clamp but see that one is on the way, which the $30 rebate will about cover. Didn't think the CF model was worth $100+ for savings of half a pound. I mean I work out. If I can't handle an extra half pound I should turn in my man card.
By now it should be clear to all pro users that twist lock are just Marketing Ploy. This locking mechanism is inferior in every aspect. The Legs loosen randomly while in transit, may it be hand carried or in the side camera bag.Purchased this after Manfotto gave me a discount coupon since the first product I got was damaged and the wrong item. I purchased direct from their site at that time. Gave it a second try. and the legs were a disappointment. Went through dry deserts to humid and pouring rain hike only to get snagged randomly on trees and shrubs coz the legs would drop on its own.Photography UsePros:- The top ball head works great for me, a little learning curve because of the dual locking system.
